Igniting the Inner Life

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Igniting the Inner Life
To ignite the inner life----that intrinsic spiritual dimension of existence----is to make a pilgrimage within-to move from "out there" to "in here" in the orientation of life, work, choices and relationships. This book is directed to those with a focus on spirituality, self-understanding, contemplative prayer, God, or the awakening of the heart''s knowledge, regardless of the religious tradition they follow. Anyone on a journey of self-discovery knows that living on the surface of things is never satisfying. Many of us have long intuited, and now science affirms, that we are connected, energetically or via field at the heart, to others and to the world. This book addresses that awareness, which is generally latent, but sometimes long-forgotten, inviting readers to stir the embers within. Every major religious or spiritual tradition contains recommendations for building and maintaining an inner life----through silence and solitude, through prayer, mantra and ritual, through sacred reading and contemplation, through poetry, nature and symbolism. This book is designed to remind us of what we know about the life of our souls, and yet easily forget in the busyness of contemporary life. We can stop and slow down; we can move quickly and work hard while still maintaining our sense of self, our clear intention; we can bless others rather than judge them; we can practice seeing ourselves more clearly and build a foundation of self-appreciation and forgiveness. A heightened urgency to know who we are from "the inside out" exists today for many. The Earth is imbalanced and human suffering and fear surface in ways we never expected a decade ago. Often, instead of our hearts, our terrors are guiding and compelling us; and the terrors of the collective psyche are building. We all need guides, role models and mentors...voices of clarity that will orient us in the direction of our own basic human goodness and inherent dignity. We all need reminding factors to wake us up from the collective trance of mediocrity and false security. This book is such a guide and reminder. Igniting the Inner Life will serve as a welcome friend to any pilgrim who wants to move deeper within. It will encourage long term but weary travelers to take that next step, and point out common detours or dead ends along this interior highway. Each chapter contains one or more contemporary poems to uplift the reader. The book concludes with suggested practices and prayers to rekindle the heart''s intentioms.

I Invite My Soul

release date: Jun 01, 2021
I Invite My Soul
The title here is from Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman who wrote, "I lean and I loaf and I invite my soul."The book itself is an invitation to any reader who relates to the need to slow down, to assume a more receptive or awaiting attitude toward life, and to remind us all once again that we do have "soul" whatever we might call it, be it conscience or truth or the voice of inner wisdom. While the idea of a "stay-cation," a home spa-treatment or self-nurturance weekend is gaining in popularity, this book is not essentially that. Rather, it focuses on the desire for an interior pilgrimage, a path to the temple of the soul. Retreat practice is presented as a means of re-establishing sanity, about resting deeply, about removing yourself from the same ole. At bottom line, it is for anyone longing for some chance to stop, for even a brief time, their usual worldly and relational patterns and activities to gain a fresh perspective on the personal inner life. It is about meditation, prayer, reflective writing, contemplative study, the beauty of nature, chanting or singing, praise and worship ... much more. It is about "coming home." And, as the author directs, what you are really looking for may not become clear until you actually start into the retreat practice, so she is there, in this book, as a trust friend and guide. The author has been a solitary "retreater" for the past twenty years and serves as the co-director of a small retreat center in Arizona. She knows the power and the pitfalls of retreat practice from her own experience and through counseling others, and generously shares her guidance and that of other seasoned retreaters from a variety of traditions, whom she has interviewed here. First timers can count on feeling more confident as they undertake the journey, and old-timers will be re-inspired. Intentional preparation is key to both a formal retreat at home or the getaway to a new location, which has the advantage of being novel. While the later is highly prized, it is not always possible due to restraints of family, job or finances. With this in mind, Ryan guides the reader in both at home and "elsewhere" retreat practice, showing us how to apply the basic principles of this discipline to both situations. During the enforced isolation so many are bearing in this time of global pandemic, her advice is practical and even compelling for anyone of any religious or spiritual orientation wishing to explore more deeply the "who" and "what" of life.
