Whether your journey is gay or straight, walking between the Christian and gay worlds, initially, is not the most comfortable of journeys. Even on the current world stage we have on the one hand President Obama who brings a hopeful new voice encouraging others to ‘embrace our gay brothers and sisters’, inviting Gene Robinson, the first openly gay consecrated bishop in the Episcopal Church, to pray at an inaugural ceremony and on the other hand Pope Benedict XVI declaring that saving humanity from homosexuality was just as important as saving the rainforest from destruction; and opposing a UN declaration “calling for an end to the practice of criminalizing and punishing people for their sexual orientation.” In other words, the Vatican agrees with the idea that homosexuality should be made illegal and gays be punished. Pink triangles anyone? Resilient to the regularity of anti-gay rhetoric, the gay community has heard the new, ever growing, Christian voices questioning theological tradition and embracing the true message of ‘love one another’. Such as the ‘100 Revs’, a group of ministers, reverends and pastors from a variety of denominations, apologizing to the gay community for the lack of welcome in the church.. Who, with the possibility of losing their jobs, bravely marched at the Mardi Gras parade and won the award for the most outstanding political statement. This exhibition documents the extraordinary stories of some who walk confidently and comfortably between those two worlds, as told in their own words. Thank you to all who took part in this project and willingness to share, sometimes difficult, parts of their lives. Be prepared to be inspired by these people who are not willing to merely tolerate, but rather, celebrate diversity. iain
