Please Talk about Me When I'm Gone

release date: Sep 06, 2013
Please Talk about Me When I'm Gone
Question: How do you get over it? Answer: You don''t. You don''t want to. It makes you who you are. Sean Murphy lost his mother days after her fifty-ninth birthday, following a five-year battle with cancer. In this eloquent memoir, he explores his family history through the context of grief, compassion, faith, and the cultivation of an artistic sensibility. Unfolding in a range of voices, brutal and tender in its portrayal of terminal illness, Please Talk about Me When I''m Gone is an unyielding love story, in which devotion and memory are capable of transcending death.

Analyzing the Analyzers

release date: Jun 10, 2013
Analyzing the Analyzers
Despite the excitement around "data science," "big data," and "analytics," the ambiguity of these terms has led to poor communication between data scientists and organizations seeking their help. In this report, authors Harlan Harris, Sean Murphy, and Marck Vaisman examine their survey of several hundred data science practitioners in mid-2012, when they asked respondents how they viewed their skills, careers, and experiences with prospective employers. The results are striking. Based on the survey data, the authors found that data scientists today can be clustered into four subgroups, each with a different mix of skillsets. Their purpose is to identify a new, more precise vocabulary for data science roles, teams, and career paths. This report describes: Four data scientist clusters: Data Businesspeople, Data Creatives, Data Developers, and Data Researchers Cases in miscommunication between data scientists and organizations looking to hire Why "T-shaped" data scientists have an advantage in breadth and depth of skills How organizations can apply the survey results to identify, train, integrate, team up, and promote data scientists

Algebraic Aspects of the Advanced Encryption Standard

release date: Nov 24, 2006
Algebraic Aspects of the Advanced Encryption Standard
The Belgian block cipher Rijndael was chosen in 2000 by the U.S. government’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to be the successor to the Data Encryption Standard. Rijndael was subsequently standardized as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), which is potentially the world’s most important block cipher. In 2002, some new analytical techniques were suggested that may have a dramatic effect on the security of the AES. Existing analytical techniques for block ciphers depend heavily on a statistical approach, whereas these new techniques are algebraic in nature. Algebraic Aspects of the Advanced Encryption Standard, appearing five years after publication of the AES, presents the state of the art for the use of such algebraic techniques in analyzing the AES. The primary audience for this work includes academic and industry researchers in cryptology; the book is also suitable for advanced-level students.

Twilight of the Chiefs

release date: Jan 01, 2004
Twilight of the Chiefs
This new research monograph discusses the basis of one of Ireland''s most extensive (and profitable) hoaxes: the MacCarthy Mor Affair, and the attendant scandal surrounding the selling of Irish traditional titles to otherwise sane businessmen and professionals. Murphy''s research covers the origins of the old Gaelic titles in pre-Norman Ireland. Principally the title of Chief, the collapse of the Gaelic order, the survival of some chiefly titles, the Gaelic Revival and the emergence of the Office of Arms. An account is given of the Office of Chief Herald as part of the new Irish state and the courtesy recognition under Dr. MacLysaght in 1944 and years that followed. Finally the emergence of one Terrence MacCarthy of Belfast as "MacCarthy Mor, Prince of Desmond" and his initial success and final unmasking is amusingly and cogently described.

No and Nervous System Plasticity
This special issue of Developmental Neuroscience features seven original articles dealing exclusively with the regulation and role of the constitutive nitric oxide synthase expressed in neurons. The first paper explains regulation through alternative splicing, yielding isoforms of the enzyme which are expressed differentially in the nervous system. The following papers outline the renewed expression of nitric oxide synthase in sensory and motoneurons following injury to the spinal cord. The final three articles discuss whether there is an interaction between nitric oxide synthase, signals from adjacent cells, and neuronal development. Neuropathologists, neuroanatomists, developmental biologists and graduate students in neuroscience programs will find this publication a valuable contribution to the field.
