Despite the excitement around "data science," "big data," and "analytics," the ambiguity of these terms has led to poor communication between data scientists and organizations seeking their help. In this report, authors Harlan Harris, Sean Murphy, and Marck Vaisman examine their survey of several hundred data science practitioners in mid-2012, when they asked respondents how they viewed their skills, careers, and experiences with prospective employers. The results are striking. Based on the survey data, the authors found that data scientists today can be clustered into four subgroups, each with a different mix of skillsets. The Belgian block cipher Rijndael was chosen in 2000 by the U.S. government’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to be the successor to the Data Encryption Standard. Rijndael was subsequently standardized as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), which is potentially the world’s most important block cipher. In 2002, some new analytical techniques were suggested that may have a dramatic effect on the security of the AES. Existing analytical techniques for block ciphers depend heavily on a statistical approach, whereas these new techniques are algebraic in nature. Algebraic Aspects of the Advanced Encryption Standard, appearing five years after publication of the AES, presents the state of the art for the use of such algebraic techniques in analyzing the AES. The primary audience for this work includes academic and industry researchers in cryptology; the book is also suitable for advanced-level students.

This special issue of Developmental Neuroscience features seven original articles dealing exclusively with the regulation and role of the constitutive nitric oxide synthase expressed in neurons. The first paper explains regulation through alternative splicing, yielding isoforms of the enzyme which are expressed differentially in the nervous system. The following papers outline the renewed expression of nitric oxide synthase in sensory and motoneurons following injury to the spinal cord. The final three articles discuss whether there is an interaction between nitric oxide synthase, signals from adjacent cells, and neuronal development.
