Theorizing Outdoor Recreation and Ecology

release date: Apr 29, 2016
Theorizing Outdoor Recreation and Ecology
Deciding what user impacts are natural or unnatural has inspired much debate. Biophysically, moose cause similar kinds of soil and vegetation impacts as hikers. Yet moose are the sign of nature while hikers are the sign of damage. The field of outdoor recreation is beset with paradoxes, and this book presents a unique, alternative framework to address these dilemmas. Examining outdoor recreation through the lens of ecological theory, Ryan draws from theorists such as Foucault, Derrida and Latour. The book explores minimum impact strategies designed to protect and enhance ecological integrity, but that also require a disturbing amount of policing of users, which runs counter to the freedom users seek. Recent ecological theory suggests that outdoor recreation''s view of nature as balanced when impacts are removed is outdated and incorrect. What is needed, and indeed Ryan presents, is a paradoxical and ecological view of humans as neither natural nor unnatural, a view that embraces some traces in nature.

New Suicide Squad Vol. 1: Pure Insanity
Setting the world’s most dangerous super-criminals against the most insidious threats to national security: that’s the idea behind the elite black-ops unit officially designated as Task Force X. It’s perfect…on paper. But the real world rarely goes according to plan. Threats evolve. Teammates turn on each other. Blood and betrayals flow like rivers. And that’s why Task Force X is better known as the Suicide Squad. Vic Sage aims to change the equation. Replacing Amanda Waller as the puppet-master of Suicide Squad’s motley crew, he’s introducing wild cards like Deathstroke and the Joker’s Daughter to whip the existing team-Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and Black Manta-into shape. But the world’s deadliest assassin and the Clown Princess of Crime have ideas of their own…and no explosive implants to keep them in line. Can this new Suicide Squad survive-or will it implode before it even begins? Find out in NEW SUICIDE SQUAD: PURE INSANITY, the first action-packed chapter of an all new Suicide Squad saga by writer Sean Ryan (BATMAN, SUICIDE SQUAD) and an elite squad of artists! Saint Patrick’S Secret

release date: Jun 26, 2013
Saint Patrick’S Secret
Mary Jo Ryan travelled over twenty thousand miles, from Ireland, to Australia, to Savannah, Georgia, in search of love, security, and peace. Instead, she found bigotry, hatred, betrayal, and pain; and the nightmare of a secret which she carried alone, until she met Frances Jackson and Richard Frankel. Frances was an African-American war widow whose courage saved Mary Jos life and whose strong faith inspired her to live above her loneliness. Richard was a combat pilot and Korean War hero seeking the truth in a world of wartime lies. Richards search to find his brother, a priest who had disappeared in 1949, revealed a Catholic conspiracy and a cover-up buried in the Pentagon. But it also led him to meet Mary Jo, and to help her carry the burden of a secret which she would keep for fifty years. Mary Jo and her two sons became the family which Richard never knew. But his attempt to overcome his own secret shame would lead to a crime which would forever link Saint Patricks parish and a 1961 CIA operation in Cuba, in a countdown to tragedy. Much more than a mystery, this is the story of a Christian womans faith, an embittered soldiers desperation, and a lonely warriors courage. In Gods providential plan, they overcome a web of lies and secret sins, on their shared journey to forgiveness and truth.

Red Snow

release date: Jul 01, 2011
Red Snow
"Red Snow" is a fast paced action adventure involving a former Army Special Forces officer turned CIA agent. His journey takes him all over the world as he fights rogue Russian SPETSNAZ forces in Afghanistan and later in the USA. His quest brings him in contact with fierce mujahidin warriors in their search for independence and at the same time, Jeremy Grant (our hero), relives the horrors of war in Vietnam. His mission continues after his CIA retirement due to severe injuries suffered in Afghanistan. His many treks take him throughout Afghanistan, Pakistan, Germany, France, Russia, and eventually back to San Francisco and his new job with the United States Customs Service. His new job, as the Chief of Intelligence for the law enforcement division, leads him to a new conflict with his old arch-nemesis Oleg V. Kolkov, formerly of Afghanistan and now a major participant in Russian Organized Crime (ROC) in California. Continually betrayed and followed by his enemies throughout his travels, Jeremy must use his training and experience to defeat them. This exciting and sometimes romantic adventure will remind you of land based "Hunt for Red October." About the Author Sean Ryan Stuart is a southern boy by birth and heritage, however as the only son of a professional military man he traveled extensively throughout the world. His personal military experience includes six years in the Air Force and seventeen in the US Army as a counterintelligence special agent. This association with civilian law enforcement extended up to and included his last seven years in the military. Mr. Stuart has had extensive training in the field of security, investigations, narcotics, counter-terrorism and linguistics. He is fluent in five languages and has also been used as a technical advisor in Hollywood. Mr. Stuart is currently living in California and is teaching specialized subjects. The Politics of Cultural Production in the DIY Hardcore Scene in Bandung, Indonesia

The Politics of Cultural Production in the DIY Hardcore Scene in Bandung, Indonesia
[Truncated abstract] In this thesis I explore the efforts by a group of young Indonesian hardcore punks to establish an autonomous community based on participatory ''Do It Yourself'' principles, as they strive to avoid the reduction of their cultural production to an assemblage of commodities for sale. I position my thesis as a critical engagement with the social theory and political practices of the anak DIY themselves. My argument draws primarily on the participant observation fieldwork I carried out with the Bandung DIY community, and particularly the DIY activists organised around the Kolektif Balai Kota (City Hall Collective), in 2004 and early 2005. Drawing on global anarcho-punk and DIY hardcore currents, these ''DIY kids'' (anak DIY) position themselves as critics of Bandung''s thriving underground music scene, which they perceive as having ''sold out'' to the commercial cultural industries. Indeed, while this scene has maintained a degree of independence from direct corporate ownership and control, it has increasingly been drawn into the capitalist logic of accumulation. More specifically, as the scene has developed into a small but significant youth-oriented fashion industry, the subcultural forms of independence, distinction, and resistance which characterise the underground have been transformed into a neoliberal form of competitive entrepreneurialism based on precarious cultural labour. Breaking with the spectacular subcultural transgression of the commercial underground, the anak DIY promote the values of kemandirian (autonomy) and komunitas (community) as a positive alternative to capitalist alienation. They seek to express and realise their values through their performances of DIY hardcore. DIY hardcore performances establish a positive synthesis between community participation and political critique and collapse the divide between performers and audience. However, the aesthetics of DIY hardcore display a degree of tension between sincere expression and ironic performance. I also identify an unresolved conflict between hardcore as a specific music genre and DIY as an ethic of practice. The specific aesthetics of hardcore serve as a vital vector for affective investment and identification, yet this renders the political practices of DIY production vulnerable to aestheticisation and commodification. I further analyse DIY hardcore as an autonomous practice of cultural production and exchange. The Bandung community is part of a global network of DIY enterprises, a system of social and economic relationships mediated through DIY hardcore products...

Interview with COL Sean Ryan

release date: Jan 01, 2006
Interview with COL Sean Ryan
Currently the chief of force generation at Fort Leavenworth''s Joint Center for International Security Force Assistance, Colonel Sean Ryan, in mid 2004, was "brought in ... to assist Brigadier General Richard Sherlock" - assistant division commander for operations for the 98th Division (Institutional Training) - "as the senior planner on the survey team ... to go over to Multinational Security Transition Command-Iraq and derive a unit-based solution that would be sustainable to support the MNSTC-I mission," namely to develop, train, equip and sustain the Iraqi security forces. In this interview, Ryan talks at length about the decision to deploy elements of an institutional training division into a combat zone to pick up this training and advisory mission, and stresses the difficulty thereof especially given that "advisor skills are somewhat enigmatic to the institutional Department of Defense." As Ryan notes, "When you say you need advisors, you either look to Special Forces or you put your hands in your pockets and start kicking stones, because there''s no definition of advisors and there''s no advisory training outside of SF." Based on his own background in SF and past foreign internal defense work in both permissive and non-permissive environments, Ryan also expounds in great detail on what makes a good (and bad) advisor, explaining that it''s largely a "function of temperament and personality" and noting that these are not qualities the Army is presently equipped to "measure and track." In addition, he discusses what he considers the lack of a plan to "reconstruct the security forces mechanisms and infrastructure within Iraq" and the inability of US-based "staff action processes" to keep up with theater requirements. Reflecting on the 98th''s selection for this mission, Ryan asks whether it was "fair to take soldiers who thought they were only going to deploy as far as Fort Jackson and deploy them into Central Command? It might not be fair," he answered, "but that''s what they had to do. You had some people who adapted to it readily and some who did not. It really just came down to the individual." Ryan also comments on the negative consequences of our coalition partners having more restrictive constraints placed upon them, such as the ability to train Iraqi units yet not the permission to "deploy outside the gate with them."
