Jefferson organized his library along the principles of the Enlightenment - Memory, Reason, and Imagination - and subdivided the subjects into 44 chapters. In chapter 15 we are introduced to Jefferson''s miscellany. Tucked away in the gap between Memory and Reason is the Technical Arts Chapter - a bit of a catch-all containing Jefferson''s hobbies, a bit of contemporary science, a touch of applied technology, card games, and other amusements. Alongside books on education, shorthand, gardening, accounting, military strategy, brewing, and book-keeping is a single volume on bee-keeping -- Stephen White''s Collateral Bee Boxes...or Method of Managing Bees. London, 1764. (Sowerby 1187). Unlike other areas of farming and husbandry, Jefferson did not pursue becoming a bee-keeper. In fact bees and honey are only briefly mentioned by him, but there are a number of entries in his Memorandum recording the purchase of beeswax, and occasionally honey. However, Edmund Bacon, Jefferson''s overseer, was a bee keeper and maintained a large stand. There are drawings of Monticello that depict bee-houses near the poultry yards. Jefferson did mention the honey-bee in his Notes on the State of Virginia "The honey-bee is not a native of our continent. The Indians concur with us in the tradition that it was brought from Europe; but, when, and by whom, we know not. The bees have generally extended themselves into the country, a little in advance of the white settlers. The Indians therefore call them the white man''s fly, and consider their approach as indicating the approach of the settlements of the whites."
