This dissertation argues that makeup was crucial to the consolidation of a new type of identity at the beginning of the twentieth century. In the third series of experiments, the region of the NTS that responded to the hypertonic saline stimulus was found to innervate the ventrolateral medulla (VLM) and nucleus ambiguus. In addition, it was found that the cardiovascular responses to the injection of hypertonic saline into the NTS were attenuated by blocking synaptic transmission in the VLM.
