A Gift from Grandma

release date: Jul 01, 2013
A Gift from Grandma
Grandparents are the givers of so many gifts. The most magical may be the gift of imagination. A lifetime ago, one grandmother gifted her granddaughter with such a treasure. Now she shares it with everyone. This charming collection of children''s poetry is complemented by fanciful illustrations portraying the treasures of everyday life. Beguiling rhymes and pictures transport young readers to the world of secret wonders hidden in plain sight all around. The book features all the creatures that inhabit the enchanted nooks of everyday life, from a cricket''s serenade to goldfish sallying from their watery castles. There are raccoons and even bandy-legged chickens emerging from their shells. You can never tell what whimsical idea will be found next in A Gift from Grandma. These poems were written by the illustrator''s grandmother, Susan Lynn Gould, who was born in 1898. She was a classic Texas plainswoman, the prairie of that time being not far removed from the Wild West. A farm girl armed only with a grade school education and unshakable faith, she braved the rigors of the dustbowl and the Great Depression. She raised four vibrant daughters and never abandoned her sense of whimsy. After World War II, she opened a successful cafe and finally began to express her reverence for life''s ordinary treasures in poetry she gifted to her children and grandchildren. She passed away in 1971, but her poetry lingers like the afterglow of sunset. Illustrator Toni Verkruysse has illustrated other children''s books and wrote the science fiction novel Pale As Hope. My grandmother''s poems have bewitched me since youngest childhood. It was always my plan to one day paint the pictures they conjured in my mind. Above All

release date: Nov 15, 2024
Above All
Above All is an extensive exploration and expansion of the themes found in Psalm 22. This psalm delves into the deep connection Christ had with God at his birth, the apparent betrayal he experienced during his earthly mission, and the glorious outcomes that arise from his suffering. The author skillfully combines references from both the Old Testament and New Testament along with her creative imagination to craft a narrative about God''s loving purpose for humanity, the plan for redemption from the fall, and, above all, the fulfillment of that redemption. Above All also offers insights into the reasons behind the wicked and terrible events that occur daily in the world and provides an explanation for why God does not always intervene. The story commences by imagining the thoughts of Jesus while he is on the cross at Calvary, and it places the reader in the role of a spectator, allowing them to witness what Jesus perceives, experiences, and does, starting from his time in the Garden of Gethsemane to the following three days after his crucifixion. "Above All: A Special Meditation and Reflection on Psalm 22" is a brilliant novel that fuses scripture in the Old and New Testament and presents a story of purpose and redemption for man. "Above All: A Special Meditation and Reflection on Psalm 22" is the creation of published author Susan L. Bailey, MD, a physician practicing internal medicine in Rochester, New York. After 36 years of practicing full-time, she has retired from the hospital and sees a small number of patients in her private practice. Her favorite pastimes are traveling, sewing vintage clothing, watching sermons on YouTube, and enjoying time with friends and family in her lakeside home. She attends church service regularly on Sundays and enjoys discussing the Word of God with people from many walks of life and on many levels. She is comfortable explaining the biblical text to those who don''t know the character of God or who Jesus is, and she is energized by discussions with seasoned religious leaders alike. She especially likes to help new believers learn how to trust the Word of God to become relevant for use in their personal journeys by relying on the counselor Jesus refers to in the book of John.

Women Caught in the Crossfire: One Woman's Quest for Peace in South Sudan

release date: Oct 01, 2023
Women Caught in the Crossfire: One Woman's Quest for Peace in South Sudan
The experiences of one woman among many that were thrust into the hardships of civil war in South Sudan during the violent struggle for independence from 1983 to 2011, explore the question: What becomes of a good person when placed in the worst circumstances imaginable? As refugees in Ethiopia, Abuk Makuac and her young son are plunged without warning into hunger and homelessness, far known. She must fight daily to feed her son, gives birth in exile, and tries to keep alive hope where there is none. She finds solace in community with other women and emerges with her goodness intact, but not without paying a heavy price. This book invites us to witness, in both picture and story, the power of female resilience not only in one life but also in the life of a nation. "We are women. Our work has always stretched beyond the lines of sunrise and sunset. Do not think us weak because we do not fight by killing. We fight by giving birth to life, we feed our young from our own bodies, we raise up new life from our own ashes. For this, one must be stronger than death itself. We are such women. We are not victims, but proud bearers of the wisdom of generations, we are every country''s lifeline of hope for the future." - ABUK JERVAS MAKUAC
