Superluminal

release date: May 11, 2004
Superluminal
Once or twice in a score of years, the realm of science fiction reveals a vision of tomorrow of epic and transforming scope. These are the dreams of the Asimovs, the Heinleins, the Bears, and the Brins. Tony Daniel brilliantly dreamed this future in his groundbreaking Metaplanetary, and now continues with Superluminal. It is a time when individuals take astounding forms and live astonishing lives. But it is also a future at war for humankind''s very soul. Civilization has extended itself far into the outer reaches of our solar system -- and in so doing has developed into something remarkable, diverse, and perhaps transcendent. But the inner system -- its worlds connected by a vast network of cables -- is supported by the repression and enslavement of humanity''s progeny, nanotechnological artificial intelligences. Now the war for human civilization shifts into high gear. A pogrom against the A.I. "free converts" moves toward a Final Solution, even as the elite super-beings, called LAPs, are co-opted into Napoleon-like Director Amés''s all-encompassing, all-powerful personality. Superluminal flight is being secretly developed, and with it a weapon that promises utter victory for Amés. But hope remains alive in the outer system with General Roger Sherman and his Federal Army. From the tattered remnants and fleeing refugees of a dozen moons and asteroids, these contentious, democratically minded warriors have been forged by the fire of battle into an effective and adaptable military force. Given time, the Federal Army stands a fighting chance to beat Amés. But the nanotech-driven war-machine of the Met is in full production, and time is the one commodity the forces of freedom lack. It is total war for humanity in all its myriad shapes: war between the vast cloudships of the outer system and the deadly armada of the Met; between massive regiments of soldiers equipped with almost unimaginable firepower. Most of all, it is war within the hearts and minds of every human being. For this is the fight that will decide, once and for all, what form -- and which way of life -- humankind will take to the stars. In Superluminal, Tony Daniel fulfills the promise of his critically acclaimed novel Metaplanetary. With gritty realism, a touch of wry humor, and -- most of all -- with an old-fashioned science fiction sense of wonder firmly in place, Daniel continues his saga of courage, sorrow, and glory brought on by total war for the soul of humanity itself.

The Savior

release date: May 26, 2015
The Savior
Sequel to The Heretic, Book 10 in the nationally best-selling General series. FROM HERETIC TO SAVIOR Duisberg is one of thousands of planets plunged into darkness and chaos by the collapse of the galactic republic. But where other worlds have begun to rebuild a star-travelling culture, Duisberg remains in an uneasy balance between mud-brick civilization and bloodthirsty barbarism. The people of Duisberg have a god: Zentrum, a supercomputer from the ancient past. Zentrum has decided to avoid another collapse by preventing civilization from rising from where it is. And because even a supercomputer and the powerful religion which it founded cannot block all progress, Zentrum has another tool: every few centuries the barbarians sweep in from the desert, slaughtering the educated classes and cowing the peasants back into submission. These are the Blood Winds, and the Blood Winds are about to blow again. This time, however, there''s a difference: Abel Dashian, son of a military officer, has received into his mind the spirit of Raj Whitehall, the most successful general in the history of the planet Bellevue—and of Center, the supercomputer which enabled Raj to shatter his planet''s barbarians and permit the return of civilization. One hero can''t stop the tide of barbarians unless he has his own culture supporting him. To save Duisberg, Abel must conquer the very land of his origin and attempt to destroy the computer A.I. “god” who has doomed his world to an everlasting Dark Age. Abel is a heretic, but now he must go beyond and become—THE SAVIOR. About The Savior: "The Savior is a sequel worth waiting for. There is more of everything inside; military strategy and war, backstory and human drama, all at higher stakes . . .Tony Daniel and David Drake pick up where they left off and run, without stumbling, toward a fantastic conclusion . . . As much as I like military Science Fiction, I dont want to read battle after battle. The Savior delivers so much more. The stories of Abel''s many allies are just as compelling. I found the conclusion of the book to be immensely satisfying." –SF Crowsnest ". . . the cost in blood is high and the descriptions of gunpowder age tactics are solid . . . conceptually intriguing."–Publishers Weekly About The Savior prequel, The Heretic: “More than once, I envied Abel’s ‘gift.’ If you count having the voice of a computer and the recreation of a famous general in your head as a gift . . . An interesting relationship that elevates [the novel] to something unique. . .I loved the battles and I found Abel to be an engaging character. Taylor Montgomery's Walking Stick
Here is a reminiscence whose theme is my family. I try to discern something of the personalities of my ancestors, along with the bare facts that I could uncover. It is a portrait of a river, a great river of memory, and its tributaries, which lie in the imagination. What is a family, anyway? It''s a giant dream, a mental conception that allows a person to be strengthened against the adverse tides of the present, or to deepen present contentment and happiness. In either case, I hope my descendants will find this dream, this slice of their own history, useful and entertaining. And I hope my great-grandfather will forgive me for turning his walking stick into a metaphor. It''s still a walking stick, believe me. I even use it, sometimes, when I''m out in the woods.
