Radical Islam in Central Asia

release date: Mar 03, 2005
Radical Islam in Central Asia
This original study by distinguished scholar Vitaly V. Naumkin offers an authoritative analysis of the key militant Islamic organizations in Central Asia. Long veiled in secrecy, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Hizb at-Tahrir al-Islami, and the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan are illuminated here for the first time. Drawing on his extensive fieldwork and an unprecedented array of Central Asian primary sources, the author thoroughly compares their doctrines, power bases, and political practices. The book also explores the history of political Islam in Central Asia and explains the concurrent roots of Islamic militancy from the early disputes between Salafis and traditionalists, through the period of Islamic revival in the late 1980s when radical groups first emerged, and up to their growing strength today. Naumkin analyzes the human dimension in Central Asian Islam through the lives of the most significant theologians, mullahs, underground preachers, and teachers in the region, evaluating their role in the spread of Islamic radicalism. Providing fresh insight into the balance between peaceful and militant means of struggle for power used by Islamic movements, the author considers into the possibility of dialogue with the Islamists and the outcome of the "Tajik experiment" that brought former Islamic radicals into the government. All those interested in the development of political Islam will find this study an invaluable resource.

The Mississippi Territory and the Southwest Frontier, 1795-1817

release date: Jan 01, 2010
The Mississippi Territory and the Southwest Frontier, 1795-1817
Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, territorial Mississippi has a complex history rife with fierce contention. Since 1540, when Hernando de Soto of Spain journeyed across the Atlantic and became the first European to stumble across its borders, the territory has been the center of passionate international disagreements. After numerous boundary shifts, Mississippi was finally admitted as the twentieth state of the Union on December 10, 1817. In The Mississippi Territory and the Southwest Frontier, 1795--1817, Robert V. Haynes does more than recount history; he explores the political and diplomatic situations that led to the formation and expansion of the Mississippi Territory. Extensively researched and exceptionally written, Haynes details critical events in Mississippi''s rich history, such as ongoing border violence, the arrest of infamous traitor Aaron Burr, and the bloody Creek War.

Roman Catholic Political Philosophy

release date: Aug 01, 2006
Roman Catholic Political Philosophy
In Roman Catholic Political Philosophy author James V. Schall tries to demonstrate that Roman Catholicism and political philosophy---revelation and reason--are not contradictory. It is his contention that political philosophy, the primary focus of the book, asks certain questions about human purpose and destiny that it cannot, by itself, answer. Revelation is the natural complement to these important questions about God, human being, and the world. Schall manages to avoid polemicism or triumphalism as he shows that revelation and political thought contribute to a fuller understanding of each other.

Melosi assembles a comprehensive, thoroughly researched and referenced history of sanitary services in urban America. He examines the evolution of water supply, sewage systems, and solid waste disposal during three distinct eras: The Age of Miasmas (pre-1880); The Bacteriological Revolution (1880-1945); and The New Ecology (1945 to present-day). Originally published in 2000, this abridged edition includes updated text and bibliographic materials. The Sanitary City is an essential resource for those interested in environmental history, environmental engineering, science and technology, urban studies, and public health.

Border Citizens

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Border Citizens
Borders cut through not just places but also relationships, politics, economics, and cultures. Eric V. Meeks examines how ethno-racial categories and identities such as Indian, Mexican, and Anglo crystallized in Arizona''s borderlands between 1880 and 1980. South-central Arizona is home to many ethnic groups, including Mexican Americans, Mexican immigrants, and semi-Hispanicized indigenous groups such as Yaquis and Tohono O''odham. Kinship and cultural ties between these diverse groups were altered and ethnic boundaries were deepened by the influx of Euro-Americans, the development of an industrial economy, and incorporation into the U.S. nation-state. Old ethnic and interethnic ties changed and became more difficult to sustain when Euro-Americans arrived in the region and imposed ideologies and government policies that constructed starker racial boundaries. As Arizona began to take its place in the national economy of the United States, primarily through mining and industrial agriculture, ethnic Mexican and Native American communities struggled to define their own identities. They sometimes stressed their status as the region''s original inhabitants, sometimes as workers, sometimes as U.S. citizens, and sometimes as members of their own separate nations. In the process, they often challenged the racial order imposed on them by the dominant class. Appealing to broad audiences, this book links the construction of racial categories and ethnic identities to the larger process of nation-state building along the U.S.-Mexico border, and illustrates how ethnicity can both bring people together and drive them apart.

Horngren's Cost Accounting

release date: Jan 01, 2023
Horngren's Cost Accounting
"This text focuses on how cost accounting helps managers make better decisions, as cost accountants are integral members of an organization’s decision-making team. In order to emphasize this prominence in decision making, we focus on basic concepts, analyses, uses, and procedures instead of on procedures alone. It is important to recognize cost accounting as a managerial tool for business strategy and implementation. We also prepare students for the rewards and challenges they will face in professional cost accounting today and tomorrow. For example, we emphasize the development of analytical skills and tools, such as Excel©, to leverage available information technology, an evolving approach to sustainability, and the values and behaviours that make cost accountants effective in the workplace."--

A valuable reference for anyone responsible for controlling product quality! Get the latest information on statistical and quality control methods, as well as recommendations for their application in various types of engineering work. It addresses the three general objectives in gathering engineering data: ? Physical constants and frequency distributions ? Relationship between two or more variables ? Causes of observed phenomena Part 1 discusses frequency distributions, simple statistical measures, and the concise presentation of the essential information contained in a singles set of n observations. It also includes additional information on the construction of box plots with a clearer definition of terms, as well as new sections on probability plots and transformations. Part 2 examines the problem of expressing plus/minus limits of uncertainty for various statistical measures, together with some working rules for rounding-off observed results to an appropriate number of significant figures. Part 3 covers the control chart method for the analysis of observational data obtained from a series of samples, and for detecting lack of statistical control of quality. New Part 4 discusses material on measurement systems analysis, process capability, and process performance. This important section is included to help evaluate the measurement process before any analysis of the process is begun.
