Language Debates

by: Various
release date: Nov 25, 2021
Language Debates
This book captures an urgent moment for language teaching, learning and research. At its core are a series of debates concerning gender stereotyping, the place of linguistics in modern languages, language activism, multilingualism and modern languages and digital humanities. Taken together, these debates explore the work that languages, and that those who learn and speak them, do in the world as well as the way we think ''through'' and ''in'' a language and are shaped by it. Language Debates acknowledges the history of language teaching and the current realities of language teaching and learning. It is bold in suggesting ways forward for reform and for policy, setting languages and language learning at the heart of a consciously transformative set of goals. This book is therefore essential reading for academics, language teachers, policy makers, students, activists and those passionate about progressing language learning and teaching. The editors and contributors make up a multilingual and multicultural team who work across languages, cultures and borders with a globally-informed approach to their work. Uniquely, the debates in this volume are based on events with participants in the Language Acts and Worldmaking Debates Series and/or workshops within the wider research project and take into account the ensuing discussions there. Each debate is accompanied by an interview which serves as a model on how to continue the conversation beyond the printed pages of the book. You can also discover ways to join the debate through links on the Language Acts and Worldmaking series website (www.jmlanguages.com/languageacts) which includes recorded debates, additional materials and more information about the series. Like all the volumes in the Language Acts and Worldmaking series, the overall aim is two-fold: to challenge widely-held views about language learning as a neutral instrument of globalisation and to innovate and transform language research, teaching and learning, together with Modern Languages as an academic discipline, by foregrounding its unique form of cognition and critical engagement. Specific aims are to: · propose new ways of bridging the gaps between those who teach and research languages and those who learn and use them in everyday contexts from the professional to the personal · put research into the hands of wider audiences · share a philosophy, policy and practice of language teaching and learning which turns research into action · provide the research, experience and data to enable informed debates on current issues and attitudes in language learning, teaching and research · share knowledge across and within all levels and experiences of language learning and teaching · showcase exciting new work that derives from different types of community activity and is of practical relevance to its audiences · disseminate new research in languages that engages with diverse communities of language practitioners.

As the world became more open and voyages more often, the differences between foreign lands and continents became more evident as ever. This truth remains topical even today, 120 years after these words were put down on paper. Now "With the World''s Great Travelers" lets you make a personal voyage through distance and time and see the most outstanding example of travel history in the world''s literature. The book consists of essays by multiple authors, like Edward A. Pollard, a notable American Journalist; Charles Darwin, a famous scientist; Meriwether Lewis, a renowned explorer, one of the leaders of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, William Howard Russell, the most celebrated foreign journalist in America during the times of the Civil War and many others. This work gives a deep insight into how the world and traveling looked a century ago.

John Adams

John Adams
John Adams, the second president of the United States, was born on the 19th of October (old style), 1735, in that part of the town of Braintree (near Boston), Massachusetts, which has since been incorporated by the name of Quincy. He was the fourth in descent from Henry Adams, who fled from persecution in Devonshire, England, and settled in Massachusetts about the year 1630. Another of the ancestors of Mr. Adams was John Alden, one of the Pilgrim founders of the Plymouth colony in 1620. Receiving his early education in his native town, John Adams, in 1751, was admitted a member of Harvard College, at Cambridge, where he graduated in regular course four years afterward. On leaving college he went to Worcester, for the purpose of studying law, and at the same time to support himself, according to the usage at that time in New England, by teaching in the grammar-school of that town. He studied law with James Putnam, a barrister of eminence, by whom he was afterward introduced to the acquaintance of Jeremy Gridley, then attorney-general of the province, who proposed him to the court for admission to the bar of Suffolk County, in 1758, and gave him access to his library, which was then one of the best in America.

Guru Nanak

release date: Dec 27, 2019
Guru Nanak
To revive Punjabi as a literary language, efforts had to be made at a level of world-historical importance. There was the urgent need to enrich its diction that Guru Nanak did by borrowing words from all possible sources i. e. classical languages; not only Sanskrit and Pali of the Indian origin but also Arabic and Persian of what was then regarded as vilayat. In this context, the dialects of the areas to the west of Punjab were also not ignored. Thereby, Braj, Rajputani and even Sindhi were tapped for this purpose. Guru Nanak also saw to it that derivation from multiple sources was not of the haphazard sort. Two techniques were at hand i. e. tatsam and tadvabh which, in a masterly way, he employed to form words of his own. He did so by altering the spellings, tones, intonations and even the meanings of words for use in his diction. From my study of the Western literature of the medieval times, I can think only of Dante who employed such subtle and suitable means to develop the Italian language. Prof. Tejwant Singh Gill

The Conspiracy Behind the Murder of Martin Luther King, Jr.

release date: Jun 16, 2020
The Conspiracy Behind the Murder of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Christian minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover considered him a radical and made him an object of the FBI''s COINTELPRO from 1963 on. FBI agents investigated him for possible communist ties, recorded his extramarital liaisons and reported on them to government officials, and, in 1964, mailed King a threatening anonymous letter, which he interpreted as an attempt to make him commit suicide. Before his death, King was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People''s Campaign, when he was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee. His death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities. Allegations that James Earl Ray, the man convicted of killing King, had been framed or acted in concert with government agents persisted for decades after the shooting. In December 1993, decades after the murder, Loyd Jowers, a white man from Memphis, asserted that the Mafia and the U.S. government were involved in a conspiracy against Martin Luther King. Jowers claimed that he participated in a conspiracy to kill Dr. King, along with an alleged Mafia figure, Memphis police officers, and a man named Raoul. For 30 years, others have similarly alleged that Ray was Raoul''s unwitting pawn and that a conspiracy orchestrated Dr. King''s murder. These varied theories have generated several comprehensive government investigations regarding the assassination, none of which confirmed the existence of any conspiracy. United States Department of Justice has examined all allegations and presented its findings in this report.

Rome
“Fresh and diverting, informative and topical without being slight or ephemeral [...] This supremely well-edited combination of current affairs, journalism, commentary, and fun facts is perfect for our pause-button moment.”–Australian Financial Review, Best Books of the Year IN THIS VOLUME: Rome doesn’t judge you by Nicola Lagioia・The soul of the city by Matteo Nucci・39 memos for a book about Rome by Francesco Piccolo Plus: a guide to the sounds of Rome; the feigned unrest and real malaise of the suburbs; the influence of the Vatican; the excessive power of real estate speculators and the rule of gangs; disillusioned trappers; football fans of every age, and much more... If you believe what’s currently being said about Rome, the city is on the verge of collapse. Each year, it slips further down the ranking of the world’s most liveable cities. To the problems faced by all large capitals, Rome has added a list of calamities of its own: a string of failing administrations, widespread corruption, the resurgence of fascist movements, rampant crime. A seemingly hopeless situation, perfectly symbolized by the fact that Rome currently leads the world in the number of self-combusting public buses. If we look closer this narrative is contradicted by just as many signs that point in the opposite direction. Above all, the lack of the mass emigration one would except in these circumstances: the vast majority of Romans don’t think for a second of “betraying” their hometown, and the many newcomers who have populated it in recent decades are often indistinguishable from the natives in the profound love that binds them to the city. Rome is a place of contradictions: an “incredibly deceptive city”, always different from what it appears to be. Thought to be large, it is actually immense, the largest metropolis in Europe. Contrary to the most common stereotype, Rome is a profoundly modern city. Founded almost three millennia ago, 92 per cent of its buildings were built after 1945. The bottom line is that, in order to understand Rome and fix its problems, we should consider it a normal city, “not unlike Chicago or Manchester.” Only, incomparably more beautiful.
