Data Protection and Information Privacy

release date: Jan 27, 2025
Data Protection and Information Privacy
The impact of cultural factors on perceptions of and attitudes toward privacy is often neglected in privacy studies. Yet, understanding these factors is crucial in our globalized world, where businesses, governments and researchers rely on data from different cultures. This book makes a contribution to closing this gap. It presents and discusses findings from a large, comparative cross-cultural study on professionals’ views of key data protection and information privacy issues, such as data autonomy, the data power of companies and governments, and the impact of data protection and information privacy regulations on companies, consumers, and the state. The book facilitates a better understanding of attitudes toward data protection and privacy across cultures by highlighting areas in which professionals around the world are (dis-)satisfied with data protection regulations and practices, and showing how culture-specific factors can help to explain differences in this area.

Discuss the Impact of Globalization on Global Poverty and Inequality

Discuss the Impact of Globalization on Global Poverty and Inequality
Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1,7, King s College London, language: English, abstract: The period from the end of the World War II to the mid-1970s saw world-wide sustained and high economic growth. Within a generation Western European society was transformed from predominantly agrarian to post-industrial. Latin America, Asia and Africa also were heading towards higher growth rates. During the 1980s, a new period of integration of national economies led to the intensification of international economic interconnectedness and developing economies were expected to overcome the between-country income gap through openness-growth link. This was seen as the manifestation of neoliberalism as new forms of international economic relations emerged such as industrialisation and the new international division of labour. However, as recent studies point towards increasing world poverty and inequality, scholars have re-examined the validity of the neoliberal argument. After years of implementing prescribed reforms, some developing countries and regions, such as Sub-Saharan Africa, have not experienced the expected growth. Chapter 2 summarizes the implications of the policy-paradigm inspired by the Washington Consensus. Chapter 3 identifies current trends in global poverty and inequality with attention to the different measures used to interpret world economic well-being. The next chapter analyses the openness-growth-inequality-poverty nexus. The final chapter seeks to recognize causes of poverty and inequality transmitted by the globalization process. The factors of poverty and inequality path dependence are grouped in four categories: economic openness and technological progress; macroeconomic policies; financialisation of the economy; and international financial institutions.

Do you consider that emissions trading provides a viable means of achieving reductions in greenhouse gases?
Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, grade: 1,7, University of Reading, language: English, abstract: Directive 2003/87/EC established a scheme for greenhouse gas (GHG) emission allowance trading within the Community which is in compliance with the overall commitment entered into by the European Community and its Member States under the Kyoto Protocol. It aims at reducing total emissions of GHG by at least 5% of the level of emissions in 1990, during the period 2008-12. The EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is based on the recognition that creating a price for carbon emissions is the most cost-effective way to achieve the deep reductions in global GHG emissions that are needed to prevent climate change from reaching dangerous levels. The first section of the present essay outlines the problem of climate change and how the international legal framework addresses it. In the second section, the cap-and-trade system is discussed as a flexible mechanism for climate protection. The next section identifies three theoretic models of the ETS: Economic Efficiency, Private Property Rights and Command-and-Control models. The fifth section outlines the EU ETS and discusses its main components. Finally, in the last section a critical analysis of the EU ETS is presented in terms of three main criticisms: target achievement, perverse incentives and economization of an ecological problem.

Border-Crossing

Border-Crossing
EN // Global History Dialogues: Border-Crossing aims to provide a platform for showcasing the role that oral history can play in diversifying the vantage points from which, about which, and through which we approach global history. Border crossing is conceptualized as extending beyond the mere physical act of traversing administrative and political boundaries. It encompasses social, and cultural, real and imagined, material and intellectual crossings, providing a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted nature of border dynamics. This open access book purses three goals. Firstly, it enables student-researchers from South America, Asia and Europe, to uncover microhistories that are close to their hearts and communities and yet resonate with global border-crossings. Secondly it provides space for educators of oral global history to reflect on their practice in nontraditional classrooms. Thirdly, it holds space for guest contributors from the University of Potsdam, who share intimate reflections on displacement, emplacement and life across borders. These conversations generate innovative deliberations about the possibilities and limits of the nexus between oral history, global history, student-research, and pedagogy. The medley of voices included in this volume speaks from multiple perspectives. The linchpin bringing many of the authors together is the Global History Dialogues project of the Global History Lab at the University of Cambridge. This timely intervention contributes to rethinking the way we tell and teach global history and oral history and, in the process, invites the reader to consider multiple ways of negotiating, overcoming, and transforming borders. --- The series Global History Dialogues is edited by Marcia C. Schenck. Editor of the Global/Oral History Conversations section: Johanna Wetzel https://globalhistorydialogues.org/

Is the use of technological force by one state against another – a so-called ‘cyber-attack’ – a breach of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter?

Is the use of technological force by one state against another – a so-called ‘cyber-attack’ – a breach of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter?
Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, grade: 1,7, University of Reading, language: English, abstract: Computers represent a stark example of dual use technology as they can be used for peaceful and military purposes, such as espionage and cyber-attacks. Cyber-attacks are a new tool of coercion, which brings many advantages for potential perpetrators in comparison with conventional attacks. For example, the knowledge and equipment necessary to initiate a computer network attack are widely available. The response of international law to this problem has been slow, attempting to twist existing legal frameworks to fit the new challenge. The present essay considers whether the international community should view computerized network attacks as a prohibited use of force under Article 2(4) of the UN Charter. The first section defines the parameters of cyber-attack and distinguishes it from other forms of computer crime. Several reasons for choosing cyber-attack over conventional weapons are identified. The second section discusses whether cyber-attack constitutes ‘armed force’. Cyber-attack is contrasted with other forms of coercion such as political and economic coercion as well as chemical and biological weapons. The final section poses the question whether cyber-attacks are prohibited by Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, particularly focusing on the issue of consequentiality.

The Power of a Trade Mark Monopoly Should Not Be Granted Where It Would Require Honest Men to Look for a Defence to an Infringement Action. - a Crit
Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Law - Media, Multimedia Law, Copyright, grade: 1,3, University of Reading, course: Intellectual property rights, language: English, abstract: One of the main functions of trade mark law is to reconcile conflicting interests of trade mark owners and third parties. The present essay identifies those conflicting interests and sheds light on how the legal framework attempts to strike a balance between preserving the rights of trade mark owners and securing the interests of third parties. The legal framework seeks to balance the interests of trade mark owners and other stakeholders such as the direct competitor, the consumer or the public at large. The first section of the essay outlines the tensions of trade mark law. Firstly, it focuses on the wide powers conferred upon the proprietor of a registered trade mark. Consequently, it identifies when the law provides for limitations of the monopolistic character of trade marks. The concept of ''honest practices in industrial and commercial matters'' is identified also in the first section. The second section of the present essay looks more closely at the trade mark defences under Section 11 of the Trade Mark Act 1994.

On the Importance of Teaching West African Literature. A Teaching Proposal for Adichie’s "Americanah"

On the Importance of Teaching West African Literature. A Teaching Proposal for Adichie’s "Americanah"
Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 14, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Institut für Anglistik), course: Studying and Teaching West African Literature and Culture, language: English, abstract: Before this paper will aim to give relevant reasons for teaching West African Literature, it will examine the question of why we even teach literature at all in the language classroom. As the restricted frame of this paper will not allow to cover West African Literature in general, especially in means of all the various countries that are included in this term, it will only focus on the novel "Americanah" which is a literary work by the Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. First, it will shed a light on teaching Literature in general an explain why there is a much-needed step towards New Literatures such as the described novel is. Then, it will provide a short summary of the plot and themes in Americanah, followed by probably the most important part which will introduce a teaching proposal for the novel. As it is with every material a teacher chooses for a class, he or she has to ask himself what the students can learn from it, how it is of bigger advantage and whether it is more beneficial than rather choosing another material or method. In this case, it is the quite convincing power of literature to be an authentic source that significantly helps improving the process of language learning.

Precious Stones in Religious Objects

Precious Stones in Religious Objects
Precious stones have fascinated mankind for millennia. These glistening and colourful pieces of nature were centres of various legends and superstitions, used for healing and protection as well as signs of status and wealth. Since the dawn of Christianity, precious stones embarked on a journey where they were gradually cleansed from their Pagan past of being used as magical amulets and introduced into the world of Christian symbolism and allegory. They became ubiquitous on the most important sacred objects - from reliquaries and crosses to altars and ornate covers for the Holy Scriptures, they broadcasted the inner, spiritual value of these items through means that were easily understandable by everyone. Similarly, the visual prowess of precious stones was also utilized through mosaics or sparkling stained-glass windows, transforming entire sacred spaces into magnificent jewel-like visions of Heavenly Jerusalem. Whether real or represented in glass, precious stones were far more than mere decoration or a sign of profane wealth. As this book shows, at least for a moment they enabled medieval eyes to experience the vision of otherworldly beauty and preciousness, a true vision of the sacred.

Contested Community
Veronika Groke interrogates the concept of the comunidad indígena (indigenous community) in the context of the history and social life of a Guaraní community in eastern Bolivia. While this institution is today firmly embedded in Bolivian politics and society, different people and interest groups have varying understandings of its meaning and purpose. By showing the comunidad to be a multifaceted complex of diverging and sometimes competing ideas, desires, and agendas, Groke provides new insight into contemporary political tensions related to culture, identity, and development

The Subsistence Perspective

release date: Nov 01, 1999
The Subsistence Perspective
A product of twenty years of analysis and activism, this unique book poses a radical alternative to the current free-market industrial system. A book of history, theory and polemic, the authors show how, if we are to survive, economies must become needs-based, environmentally sustainable, co-operative and local. They explain how the current capitalist systems is none of these things, is inherently unstable and is dependent on the exploitation of various marginalized groups, particularly women, and of the environment. They call instead for a new politics and economics based on subsistence and present examples of such a perspective in practice. They describe current peasant economies and show how they are not only alive and possible but necessary and sufficient - far from being a brutalizing way of life, it is seen to be an empowering form of work on something - agriculture - which is fundamental for a modern subsistence-oriented society. We see indigenous communities in Guatemala setting up their own village-based subsistence economies as a way of liberating themselves from colonial subjectification via wage labour. With examples from Africa, Latin America and Europe, the book shows how the subsistence principle can and does have a positive effect on market exchange - with exchange oriented towards the social good rather than profit. The book concludes with a call for a new politics based on the view from below, rather than one concerned with power and dominance. The authors'' subsistence perspective poses a powerful alternative to the top-down ideology of development politics. The book as a whole brilliantly demonstrates how development only works when it is done from the bottom up.

Low Cost Carriers - Business Model, Impacts of its Expansion and Challenges

Low Cost Carriers - Business Model, Impacts of its Expansion and Challenges
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Economics - Micro-economics, grade: 1,3, Furtwangen University; Villingen-Schwenningen, language: English, abstract: Across a wide range of industries traditional market leaders are threatened by low price competitors. These low price firms are steadily eroding the profit margins and market share of their more established rivals. A vivid example from aviation is the Low Cost Carriers. Beginning in the North America and spreading to Europe, the airline passenger market has witnessed a growing intensity in price-based competition. This intensified competition has been facilitated by policy deregulation initiatives until the emergence of the phenomenon Low Cost Airlines. European Low Cost Airlines have changed people’s leisure and travel habits, opening up direct services between city pairs that were not available before. The present thesis aims at analysing the European Low Cost Carriers (LCCs) business model from the perspective of its rapid expansion on the air travel market. In conjunction with the liberalisation of commercial aviation the LCCs’ impacts on the European community have been identified in line with the sustainable transport concept recognized as a common goal in the two European Commission’s strategic documents: Lisbon Agenda and European Sustainable Development Strategy. The European low cost model is examined in terms; its business model and strategic positioning; the LCCs’ positive and negative impacts after its rapid growth; the sector dynamics and its long term sustainability. This LCC multi-dimensional view imposes the main questions of the current work in search for broad analysis of the LCCs trend: “What are the essential characteristics of the LCCs business model?”;” How it affects the EU community?”; and “What driving forces stand behind the LCCs model?”. The thesis sets itself the following sub-objectives and attempts to answer their corresponding questions: - Overview of the European civil aviation industry prior deregulation (until 1988): How the industry was regulated and by whom? - Tracing the European air travel industry’s liberalisation: What kind of regulatory changes have been introduced in European civil aviation after 1988? - Consequences of the deregulation processes on the air travel market: What were the outcomes of the air transport industry’s liberalisation and prerequisites for LCCs emergence? - Introduction of the first European LCCs: How the European LCCs emerged? - Analysis of the LCCs competitive and cost advantages: What are the LCCs’ cost advantages and their determinants? Scanning technique is described in detail, with guidance on scanning positions and protocols. Imaging findings are then illustrated and discussed for normal breast variants, the different forms of breast cancer, fibroadenomas, cystic disease, benign and malignant male breast disorders, mastitis, breast implants, and postoperative breast scars. In order to aid appreciation of the benefits of 3D ABVS, comparisons with findings on X-ray mammography and conventional 2D hand-held US are presented. Readers will be especially impressed by the convincing demonstration of the advantages of the new method for diagnosis of breast cancer in women with dense glandular tissue. In enabling readers to learn how to perform and interpret 3D ABVS, this book will be of great value for all who are embarking on its use. It will also serve as a welcome reference for radiologists, oncologists, and ultrasonographers who already have some familiarity with the technique.

Mere Chances

Mere Chances
Mere Chances collects some of Veronika Simoniti''s most singular and strange stories. A linguistic experimentalist in the tradition of Julio Cortazar, Simoniti populates her tales with homeless and nomadic characters struggling to fashion or to maintain their identities as they cross physical and linguistic borders. Whether compelled to communicate in codes not their own or grappling with the loss of language itself, her characters'' struggles to forge stable identities point to the way human language, while fundamental to the formation of the self, is often an unreliable and imperfect tool.

500 Figures in Clay
It’s an absolutely unequalled photographic gallery: no other book has ever presented such a varied, captivating collection of contemporary ceramics based on the human form. The works range from representational to abstract, from artful realism to provocative surrealism, and many of them come from leaders in the field such as Judy Fox, Kurt Weiser, and Andy Nasisse. Kay Yourist has produced female forms that are smooth, minimalist vessels with only the slightest hint of breasts and belly. The simple, rounded features of Diane Lublinski’s black-and-white figures possess a fun, clown-like whimsy. Michael A. Prather’s mournful ceramic portraits have frowning faces and pointed dunce-like heads in a muted color palette. Many of the ceramics come with detail images and illuminating artist’s commentary.

COVID-19 and SME Failures

COVID-19 and SME Failures
We estimate the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on business failures among small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in seventeen countries using a large representative firm-level database. We use a simple model of firm cost-minimization and measure each firm’s liquidity shortfall during and after COVID-19. Our framework allows for a rich combination of sectoral and aggregate supply, productivity, and demand shocks. We estimate a large increase in the failure rate of SMEs under COVID-19 of nearly 9 percentage points, absent government support. Accommodation & Food Services, Arts, Entertainment & Recreation, Education, and Other Services are among the most affected sectors. The jobs at risk due to COVID-19 related SME business failures represent 3.1 percent of private sector employment. Despite the large impact on business failures and employment, we estimate only moderate effects on the financial sector: the share of Non Performing Loans on bank balance sheets would increase by up to 11 percentage points, representing 0.3 percent of banks’ assets and resulting in a 0.75 percentage point decline in the common equity Tier-1 capital ratio. We evaluate the cost and effectiveness of various policy interventions. The fiscal cost of an intervention that narrowly targets at risk firms can be modest (0.54% of GDP). However, at a similar level of effectiveness, non-targeted subsidies can be substantially more expensive (1.82% of GDP). Our results have important implications for the severity of the COVID-19 recession, the design of policies, and the speed of the recovery.

Fleeting Memories
The investigation of what people understand and remember from rapidly presented sequences of visual stimuli began in the late 1960s. In this book prominent researchers approach the topic from psychological, neuropsychological, and electrophysiological perspectives. Specific issues include RSVP (rapid serial visual presentation), attentional blink, repetition blindness, and scene perception. The contributors review recent research on our ability to comprehend and remember pictures of objects and scenes, written words, and sentences when the visual stimuli are presented sequentially at rates of up to ten items per second. In short, the book is about our remarkably developed abilities to understand and remember the contents of very briefly presented material.
