Né en 1913, Walt Kelly a commencé sa carrière d’illustrateur à l’âge de 13 ans. En 1935, il déménage à Los Angeles et rejoint les studios Disney où il collabore à de nombreuses productions telles que Pinocchio, Dumbo ou Fantasia. En 1941, il quitte Disney et commence à réaliser des BD. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il devient dessinateur politique dans l’éphémère New York Star, dans lequel il lance un strip quotidien proposant des commentaires de l’actualité avec les personnages du Marais d’Okefenokee, l’entourage de Pogo. Le premier strip de Pogo apparaît le 4 octobre 1948. Le présent recueil regroupe pour la première fois les deux premières années de strips de Pogo.
