The Spences have been sailing out of Newfoundland for 300 years, in ships named the "Black Joke." In the 1930''s there is no market for cod, and without cargo to sell, Jonathan Spence could lose his ship. Trading in bootleg liquor will pay off, but sailing with that cargo leads to danger which nearly destroys the Black Joke, and leaves two boys cast away on a rock island.
