Development of Deep Site Specific and Reference Shear Wave Velocity Profiles in the Canterbury Plains, New Zealand

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Development of Deep Site Specific and Reference Shear Wave Velocity Profiles in the Canterbury Plains, New Zealand
Deep (typically u003e1000 m) shear wave velocity profiles were developed across the Canterbury basin at nine strong motion stations using a combination of active and passive surface wave methods and horizontal to vertical spectral ratio measurements. A multi-mode, multi-method joint inversion process, which included Rayleigh and Love wave dispersion and horizontal to vertical spectral ratio data, was used to estimate the shear wave velocity profiles at each site. A-priori geologic information was utilized in defining preliminary constraints on the complex geologic layering of the Canterbury basin. At sites where interbedded layers were present, velocity reversals were considered in the inversion. Shear wave velocity profiles developed as part of this study were combined with the median profiles from 14 Christchurch sites detailed in a separate study, to develop a suite of region and soil specific reference shear wave velocity profiles for the Canterbury basin. Site specific and reference shear wave velocity profiles developed as part of this study can be used for back-analysis of earthquake ground motions, forward analysis of future ground motions, full 3D physics based simulations, or to refine 3D velocity models for the region. 1000 m) shear wave velocity profiles were developed across the Canterbury basin at nine strong motion stations using a combination of active and passive surface wave methods and horizontal to vertical spectral ratio measurements. The Role of Lattice Excitation in Si Etching

The Role of Lattice Excitation in Si Etching
The chemistries of fluorine, F2, and xenon difluoride, XeF2, with clean Si are basically the same, while their chemistries diverge dramatically past I ML F coverage. With a clean Si surface, F2 and XeF2 react utilizing an atom abstraction mechanism, where a surface dangling bond abstracts a F atom from the incident molecule, scattering the F atom or XeF fragment into the gas phase. Past 1 ML coverage, further exposure to F2 results in no increase in F coverage, indicating that reaction of F2 with the fluorinated Si surface does not occur. In contrast, further exposure to XeF2 results in additional reaction, increasing the coverage sufficiently beyond 1 ML F to produce the volatile etch product, SiF 4. The experiments described in this thesis explain the observed difference in reactivity of F2 and XeF2 with a fluorinated Si surface as vibrational excitation of the Si lattice, induced by the initial collisions of XeF2 with the surface that enable a barrierless reaction of the fluorine carried on the Xe with the Si-Si bonds of the surface or lattice. The possibility of enhancement of the reactivity of F2 by vibrational excitation of the fluorinated Si lattice is studied using the van der Waals dimer Kr(F2). Kr(F2) is produced by coexpansion of F2 and Kr in a molecular beam. It has the mass of bound KrF2 with the chemical properties of F2. Any increase in Si reactivity using Kr(F2) compared to that of F2 can be attributed to the mass of the molecule, since the dimer is basically a heavy F2 molecule. After exposure of the fluorinated Si to Kr(F2) molecules, the final F coverage is measured. With an estimate of Kr(F2) exposure already calculated, the reaction probability is then found. The Kr(F2) species is shown to have a reaction probability (Pads = 0.04) that is several orders of magnitude greater than that measured for F2 (Pads ~10-4) and around 20 times less than that for XeF2 (Pads = 0.9.) A simple classical model is presented to explain the reactivity difference of F2 and XeF2 with Si. Using simulation, the amount of energy transferred by a given mass to the Si surface, along with number of collisions and Si lattice excitation time, is determined. From the simulation, XeF2 suffers 2-3 more collisions with Si than does F2 . Since more collisions are occurring using XeF2, the Si lattice is deformed for a longer period of time. Therefore, the Si-Si lattice bonds are stretched and compressed for a longer period of time, an advantageous situation for further reaction with the fluorine bound to the Xe. Excitation of the surface lattice may play a role in the reactivities of XeF2 and F2 with Si. This mechanism has not been fully investigated previously, and may account for the large difference in reactivity that is observed for these species. This study shows for the first time that the energy transferred to a surface as a result of a molecule''s initial collision with it plays a critical role in the reaction probability in a molecule-surface interaction. Furthermore, this mechanism should apply to other semiconductor etchants, and must be considered in future kinetic models of such etchant systems.

Evaluating the Economic Benefits and Costs of Antimicrobial Use in Food-producing Animals

release date: Jan 01, 2019
Evaluating the Economic Benefits and Costs of Antimicrobial Use in Food-producing Animals
Abstract: Antimicrobial drugs are used in food animal production for several purposes: to treat a disease outbreak, to prevent disease, and to enhance feed efficiency and animal growth. While the technical benefits of antimicrobial use in animal production are well documented, there is a major lack of information on the economic impact on farmers'' incomes. This report reviews evidence on the economic benefits and costs of antimicrobials for the major animal producing species across several OECD countries as well as in Brazil and China. The findings indicate that the economic benefits are modest in modern farming systems where good production facilities, biosecurity measures, and management practices are in place. In large food animal producing countries such as Brazil, the use of antimicrobials is an important input to enhance the competitiveness of the industry. In China, the largest producer and user of antibiotics in animal production, antibiotics are often used as a substitute for less sanitary animal production facilities and the lack of appropriate biosecurity on the farm. This report concludes with several key policy options and practices, in particular those that induce farmers to place a greater emphasis on the economic benefits and costs of antimicrobials and alternative interventions in production in order to stem the rise in antimicrobial resistance

How to Utilize Hedging and a Fuel Surcharge Program to Stabilize the Cost of Fuel

How to Utilize Hedging and a Fuel Surcharge Program to Stabilize the Cost of Fuel
This paper looks at some of these travails as well as the common tools used to approach a volatile priced commodity, diesel fuel. It focuses on the impacts of hedging for companies that are directly impacted through the consumption of diesel fuel in addition to companies that are indirectly impacted because they outsource their transportation. It examines the impact of a fuel surcharge and how it distributes risk throughout the supply chain. To complement the research, analysis was conducted in the form of a survey to benchmark the industry with respect to current practices of hedging and fuel surcharges, a sensitivity test of a fuel surcharge matrix to find its appropriate usage, and a simulation to provide guidance as to the appropriate strategy for hedging. Lessons learned from the survey flowed into the sensitivity testing and simulation. These three segments of analysis highlighted the problem of volatility, increasing cost, and inability to pass on the cost, proving the true pain of fuel in the market. Ultimately, the paper answers: How to utilize hedging and a fuel surcharge program to stabilize the cost of fuel? The survey showed the wide adoption of fuel surcharges, confirming the academic research. The sensitivity test proved the need to keep the escalator variable in line with a carrier''s actual fuel efficiency and standardize for all carriers. The simulation recommended longer term derivatives. Putting this together, the fuel surcharge establishes stability for the carrier, at the risk of the shipper. The shipper must maintain that stability through its maintenance of the escalator in the fuel surcharge matrix. Additionally, the shipper should hedge fuel via long term derivatives to establish personal fuel cost stability, creating a competitive advantage and enabling the shipper to compete more effectively.
