Centre for Christian Living Annual 2018

release date: Feb 27, 2019
Centre for Christian Living Annual 2018
How should we deal with our guilt and shame? How should we think about freedom? What is Spirit-inspired Christian living? How does our understanding of hell affect the way we live the Christian life? The Christian gospel transforms every aspect of our lives. If we don’t understand that, we don’t understand Christianity. The Centre for Christian Living, which operates out of Moore Theological College in Sydney, aims to bring biblical ethics to everyday issues—taking the theology and knowledge of God and showing how it shapes and directs every aspect of our daily lives. To that end, we have compiled this annual, which collects some of the material from our activities during 2018: essays from our public events, highlights from our podcast and articles by members of our student team at Moore College. Our hope is that you will find this collection helpful and encouraging as you live out the Christian life.

Hacksaw

Hacksaw
Offering professional wrestling fans a ringside seat into his adventurous life, WWE Hall of Fame wrestler Jim Duggan recounts for the first time key moments and legendary bouts both inside and outside the ring. Known to millions of enthusiasts as a charismatic patriot--with an American flag in his right hand and his signature two-by-four in his left--Duggan here reflects on his early life as a student-athlete on the Southern Methodist University football squad. Drafted by the Atlanta Falcons, Duggan shares how an injury-plagued rookie season curtailed his football ambitions and paved the way for a brighter career in professional wrestling. Rising to fame in the Cold War-era 1980s, Duggan immediately put himself at odds with anti-American "heels" and engaged in legendary feuds with some of the most legendary names in the sport, including the Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, and Andre the Giant. In this who''s who of top-tier wrestling, Duggan reveals not only the high points of championship bouts but also the low points that occurred far away from the TV cameras and screaming fans, including his fight against kidney cancer during the prime of his career. With each page peppered with Duggan''s charming wit, fans will find much to enjoy and discover about the man they once knew only as "Hacksaw."

The Gangster's Butler

release date: Sep 12, 2017
The Gangster's Butler
In a time before cable news and the Internet, people got their news from bold, tough-as-nails journalists. These brave souls would go to extraordinary lengths to get the truth to the public, often putting their lives at risk for a scoop. The Gangster''s Butler is a memoir from a bona fide newspaperman, Howard Scott Williams. From 1948 to 1976, he covered some of the most incredible stories in Los Angeles and beyond. His subjects included Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Robert F. Kennedy''s assassin, and notorious gangster Mickey Cohen, for whom Williams posed as a butler in a particularly complex and fascinating story. Williams''s stories are so amazing that you might not believe them if you read them in a newspaper, which may be why many of the details were never printed-until now. However, every story is true and presented with the dignity and sobriety befitting an honorable newspaperman. Whether you work in journalism, are interested in juicy stories of old Los Angeles, or just enjoy a good read, you''ll find plenty to love in this insider''s look at journalism during an extraordinary time in American history.

An Odd Book

release date: Mar 15, 2017
An Odd Book
Odd McIntyre''s life is a fascinating story of how a shy high school dropout found fame and fortune writing about pop culture from New York during the Roaring Twenties. It''s also a story of camaraderie and friendship between some of the most popular writers, musicians, artists and entertainers of the first decades of the twentieth century. It''s a story of having the best of everything money can buy, while simultaneously suffering from an undiagnosed illness that resulted in severe physical and mental disabilities. But more than anything, Odd''s story is about the power of the written word to, as he put it, "entertain people a little each day." Thanks to the thousands of articles and columns Odd wrote during his lifetime, we have a unique view of popular culture during one of the most exciting times of change and innovation in history. Odd wrote more, made more money, and had more readers than any other columnist in his era. When the world was hungry for newspapers and magazines, and radio and movies were in their infancy, he carefully managed his public persona to become a media superstar. His rise to stardom is even more remarkable when you learn he was fighting a disease that wasn''t yet understood. Trying to hide the symptoms of what was likely pernicious anemia, he struggled with an undiagnosed disorder that caused impaired concentration, great physical weakness, insomnia, severe depression, panic attacks, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive behavior. Raised by his grandmother in Gallipolis, Ohio after the early death of his mother, he learned to use the deep connection he felt with small-town America, as he wrote about his experiences living a glamorous life of urban sophistication in New York. This allowed him to successfully bridge two profoundly different cultures while working in a period of great innovation in communication, politics, art, and entertainment, as the world was shifting from the Gilded Age to the Progressive Era. New technologies and methods of communication were being quickly adopted around the world, as were new ideas regarding journalism and the role of media in American politics and society. Odd was at the epicenter of communication during the birth of this new modern age. Odd also personally witnessed and wrote about many of the historic moments and important popular culture movements of that era. He was there with his pad and pencil on a cold, rainy New York day as Titanic survivors stepped onto the pier and began sharing their stories of what happened when the "unsinkable" ship struck an iceberg. He was one of the first reporters to interview the Wright brothers when they were a couple of unknown bicycle mechanics trying to build a flying machine. Odd was also there to observe and share the stories of the men and women responsible for creating the music that exploded out of Tin Pan Alley and spread across the world. As Florenz Ziegfeld Jr.''s press agent, he was backstage absorbing--and then sharing--every detail as theater shifted from vaudeville to something completely new and different on Broadway. As a close friend of Rudolph Valentino, Charlie Chaplin, and other actors, Odd had a literal front-row seat as moving pictures became nickelodeons, nickelodeons became silent films, and silent films became talkies. He spent hours in Parisian bars with a group of writers who came to be known as the "Lost Generation" and was there with Fitzgerald and Hemmingway as they wrote some of their greatest work. Odd''s life story is about a man who, when no one would give him a chance, created his own way to do what he loved. In the process, he produced an incredible body of work that brings to life one of the most fascinating periods in American pop culture.

The Accidental Fame and Lack of Fortune of West Tennessee's David Crockett

release date: Jul 01, 2021
The Accidental Fame and Lack of Fortune of West Tennessee's David Crockett
Experience the thrilling journey of West Tennessee''s David Crockett as he rises from frontier to fame to international icon. Using his wits, sense of humor, and common sense, David Crockett rose from the West Tennessee frontier during the divisive Jacksonian Era to become the first American celebrity. Early newspaper editors quickly found that his name and exploits-often exaggerated-led to increased sales, while the first biography about his life, printed while he was still living, became an instant bestseller. He even brokered some of the first licensing deals that reproduced his image and signature on prints and made them available to his fans. Talented men and women who were creating the American arts from scratch found in Crockett a muse who reflected how many in the country wanted to see themselves. They put him in books, plays, songs, and poems. Then, Americans made him a superhero. And there was substance to his style. As a member of Congress, he had a front-row seat as second and third generations of Americans took the torch of Democracy from the country''s founding fathers and mothers and struggled to keep it burning. His list of friends and enemies was long and included notables like Andrew Jackson, Sam Houston, Henry Clay, and James K. Polk. As with celebrities who would come later like James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley, Crockett''s tragic death would occur too early and fuel his transition from celebrity to icon. Decades later, Walt Disney introduced his own version of "Davy" and ignited a licensed product phenomenon unlike anything that had ever been seen before and rarely since. In The Accidental Fame and Lack of Fortune of West Tennessee''s David Crockett, R. Scott Williams uncovers what propelled this meteoric rise from frontier to fame, while also examining the birth of Tennessee during one of the most fascinating periods in American history.

Self Help Guide to Living

release date: Jul 01, 2019
Self Help Guide to Living
The Self Help Guide to Living is a satirical look at self-help books, poking fun at the genre while hypocritically passing itself off as a self-help advice book. First and foremost, the book is about you. Understanding yourself, the world around you, and all the crazy stuff that happens to us. It''s about facing insecurity, dealing with problems. I dole out plenty of advice, mainly that I have no idea what I''m talking about and you shouldn''t take me seriously. The topics include love and relationships, family and friendships, fear, insecurity, religion and death. It''s all in there, every little nugget of wisdom you need to make your life better. Or maybe not. I really don''t know what I''m talking about.Self-help books are full of @%&! Everyone knows this. This book is not. Okay, maybe it is. But then again, maybe it isn''t. Perhaps it''s a profound source of humor and quality advice for understanding yourself and life''s journey.Meh, probably not. But it''s funny.....sort of.....I hope. I don''t know, just read it.
