Side-stepping with Shorty

release date: Dec 13, 2019
Side-stepping with Shorty
In "Side-stepping with Shorty," Sewell Ford masterfully captures the essence of early 20th-century American life through the lens of humor and social commentary. This novel is structured around the vivid escapades of the protagonist, Shorty, whose misadventures provide sharp insights into the culture of the time. Ford''s prose reflects a rich tapestry of regional dialects and colloquial expressions, rendering a lively depiction of American vernacular. The blend of humorous narrative and keen observation situates the work within the broader literary context of early American naturalism and humor writing, echoing the works of contemporaries like Mark Twain and Ring Lardner while carving out its own unique voice. Sewell Ford, an American author born in 1868, was deeply influenced by his upbringing in a small town and the societal shifts of the industrial era. His experiences in journalism and as a humorist gave him a unique perspective on the idiosyncrasies of everyday life, which he deftly incorporates into his writing. Ford''s ability to weave humor and pathos reflects his understanding of human nature and the complexities of American society during a transformative period. "Side-stepping with Shorty" is a delightful exploration of character and culture that invites readers to engage with the comedic aspects of human experiences. I highly recommend this novel to those who appreciate witty prose, regional storytelling, and poignant social critique, as well as anyone seeking an entertaining yet reflective glimpse into America''Äôs past.

The Many Daughters of Afong Moy

release date: May 02, 2023
The Many Daughters of Afong Moy
From the New York Times bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet comes a powerful novel about the love that binds one family of women across generations. Dorothy Moy breaks her own heart for a living. As Seattle''s former poet laureate, that''s how she describes channeling her dissociative episodes and mental breakdowns into her art. But when her five-year-old daughter, Annabel, exhibits the same behavior and begins remembering things and events she has never experienced, Dorothy believes the past has truly come to haunt the present. If she doesn''t take radical steps, her daughter will be doomed to face the same debilitating depression that has marked her life. Through epigenetic therapy-an experimental treatment designed to mitigate inherited trauma-Dorothy intimately connects with the past generations of women in her family: Faye Moy, a nurse in Burma serving with the Flying Tigers; Afong Moy, the first Chinese woman to set foot in America; Zoe Moy, a student in England at a famous school with no rules; Lai King Moy, a girl quarantined in San Francisco during a plague epidemic; and Greta Moy, a tech executive with a unique dating app. Through reliving their painful stories, Dorothy comes to understand the true cost of inherited pain. As the past bleeds into the present, Dorothy discovers that trauma isn''t the only thing she''s inherited. A stranger is searching for her in each time period. A stranger who''s loved her through all of her genetic memories. And that person is most certainly not her current husband, Louis. To protect her daughter''s future, Dorothy must break the cycle and find a way to cross time and resolve all past traumas, to find the love that has long been waiting, and find peace for Annabel. Even if it means she must sacrifice her only chance at life and happiness

My Life and Work

release date: Nov 17, 2015
My Life and Work
We have only started on our development of our country—we have not as yet, with all our talk of wonderful progress, done more than scratch the surface. The progress has been wonderful enough—but when we compare what we have done with what there is to do, then our past accomplishments are as nothing. When we consider that more power is used merely in ploughing the soil than is used in all the industrial establishments of the country put together, an inkling comes of how much opportunity there is ahead. And now, with so many countries of the world in ferment and with so much unrest every where, is an excellent time to suggest something of the things that may be done in the light of what has been done. When one speaks of increasing power, machinery, and industry there comes up a picture of a cold, metallic sort of world in which great factories will drive away the trees, the flowers, the birds, and the green fields. And that then we shall have a world composed of metal machines and human machines. With all of that I do not agree. I think that unless we know more about machines and their use, unless we better understand the mechanical portion of life, we cannot have the time to enjoy the trees, and the birds, and the flowers, and the green fields. I think that we have already done too much toward banishing the pleasant things from life by thinking that there is some opposition between living and providing the means of living. We waste so much time and energy that we have little left over in which to enjoy ourselves.
