Both Sides of the Niger
Poetry. "For many years I have admired the restless and generously spirited poems of Andrew Kaufman. He really does go to both sides of the Niger—both literally and metaphorically. This is not only a splendid book but it''s also splendid journey!"—Thomas Lux "Kaufman accomplishes what few poets ever achieve—a travel and poetry book combined, which is as earthy and spiritual as anything the renowned anthropologist Levi-Straus could have written. This isn''t an Americanized poetical version of Conrad''s Heart of Darkness, but the real thing."—Hal Sirowitz "As in his earlier work, Andrew Kaufman once again assumes the voice and the manner of the traveler in the ancient sense of that particular character that recurs throughout eastern and western literature. In BOTH SIDES OF THE NIGER, the world the traveler inhabits—because he is never simply an observer here—is the otherworldly literal and figurative landscape of West Africa, where more than just hunger and dehydration are at stake. What distinguishes Mr. Kaufman''s poems from others whose work is driven by the facts and fictions of their world travels, is that the poems gathered here are illustrative of an obsessive and undeniable desire to be inside of the place the poet almost haphazardly finds himself in, and once there to participate as fully as possible in the pathologies of love and work that define our world and the world of cultures other than ours. This is a complicated gesture, especially when expressed in the form of poetry, and it can only be accomplished by having a craftsman''s ear for the turn of the line, a palpable generosity of spirit that understands the sameness of us all, and a regard for language that compels the poet to settle on nothing less than getting the words right. Andrew Kaufman understands these things and his poetry is therefore worthy of our attention and our praise."—Bruce Weigl "As in his earlier collection, Earth''s Ends, Andrew Kaufman here takes the considerable risk of writing poems based on experiences sought, at least in part, for that purpose. They splendidly transcend reportage, largely because of Kaufman''s deep knowledge of the craft. He allows traditional verse into the poems just long enough to establish the contrasting perceptions of order in the observer''s mind and in the cultures observed. Thus he creates an exhilarating balance between the joys of discovery and the tragic limits of our understanding."—Henry Taylor

Fakt, że z naszymi wschodnimi sąsiadami kłócimy się nieustannie od wielu stuleci, nie powinien nam przesłonić urody języka rosyjskiego. The Isthmus: A New Path Between the Seas... The Isthmus will chronicle Panama''s recent emergence through photographer Andrew Kaufman''s decade-long project to document the people and places shaped by the construction of the new Panama Canal. Begun in 2004, Kaufman''s quest to document Panama''s transformation has taken him to all corners of Panama, from the Pacific entrance of the canal (under the Bridge of the Americas) to Panama City''s gleaming high-rise neighborhoods to the slums of Chorillo and Curundu, to the lands of native tribes the Embera, Guaymi, and Kuna. Featuring interviews with many of Kaufman''s photographic subjects, including engineers, construction workers, business leaders, bus drivers, school teachers, historians, poets, and artists, the project will offer a comprehensive look at a country and people trying to find their place in a globalized world.

The Rwanda Poems

release date: Mar 10, 2023
The Rwanda Poems
The only book of poetry to date devoted to the Rwanda genocide and published in this country, this is a work of nonfictional poetry, a cousin in genre to the nonfictional novel. It is based not only on the poet''s observations and encounters during months spent in post-genocide Rwanda, but on his numerous extensive interviews with survivors, all of whom lost most if not all of their families, and with convicted genocide perpetrators, conducted in prisons. The result is a startling book of poems that by turns is unthinkably horrifying, heartbreaking, and enraging, yet which at times breaks unexpectedly into stunning revelatory moments of grace. As a poetry of witness this book reveals what it is like to carry on with daily life in a society where nearly every adult male is either a genocide survivor or perpetrator, almost every woman either a survivor or the wife of a perpetrator, and where nearly every child at the time of the genocide witnessed multiple killings, often of immediate family members. Ranging from free verse to stanzaic forms, this book by an NEA-award-winning poet uses tools and methods of poetry to distil each of its many varied voices to its essence, allowing those who are heard in these poems to speak for themselves, often in juxtapositions that lend the book the structure and tension of a drama. Considered more broadly, The Rwanda Poems is a book about the extremities of evil that the human psyche is capable of enduring and inflicting, and the resulting psychic costs to survivors and perpetrators.

Breach
Andrew Kaufman has been exploring the concepts of containment, breach and contamination in a multiplicity of forms ranging from painting to video installation. While the canvases he works with might contain the images he creates, Kaufman''s process suggests a breach when his lines run rampant; rugs bend, vitrines tip over. In an installation of 10 small, disassembled television monitors, Kaufman makes and remakes drawings in an endless loop, containing the mark making and interrupting it.

Inflammation Arising from Obesity Reduces Taste Bud Abundance and Renewal
Despite evidence that the ability to taste is weakened by obesity and rescued with weight loss intervention, few studies have investigated the molecular effects of obesity on the physiology of taste. Taste bud cells undergo continual turnover, even in adulthood, exhibiting an average life span of about 10 days, tightly controlled by a balance of proliferation and cell death. Recent data reveal that an acute inflammation event can upset this balance. I demonstrate that chronic low-grade inflammation brought on by an obesogenic diet reduces the number of taste buds in gustatory tissues of mice, by attenuating the renewal of taste cells, and is likely the cause of taste dysfunction seen in obese populations. ...

Nothing More Common Than Strangeness
This thesis is an investigation of the intersection between biography and fiction. Specifically, it seeks to use the creative-writing techniques and strategies of metaphoric and allegorical devices in order to tell a story in a manner that resonates with more emotionally resonance than a pure factual or realistic approach. Within the text a narrative approach is utilized to explore the question of which approach creates a narrative that is more real or true: a purely factual, almost journalistic portray of a life, a purely allegorical or metaphorical depiction of that life or whether a complication of the two is in fact the most successful at a full and resonate description. It is the author''s submission and conclusion that the final approach, a combination of both factual and metaphoric techniques, a merging of both subjective and objective experience, that provides the fullest text.

The Complete Cinnamon Bay Sonnets
Poetry. "Andrew Kaufman''s THE COMPLETE CINNAMON BAY SONNETS bear powerful witness to ''the last loneliness'' of the lost, the forsaken, the outcast, the humiliated, the downtrodden. Divided between the almost paradisiacal Virgin Islands and a New York City Central Booking cell, the poet offers his nightmare flashbacks/angelic visions. ''Swimming in wonder, '' deafened by ''the screaming sirens of pure pain, '' he evokes ''the intifada of the heart.'' ''Yo Professor, '' his cellmates implore him, ''We''re all sad. Tell us a poem.'' Echoing the Psalmist''s ''How can I sing the Lord''s song in a strange land?'' with brave urgency he responds: ''I am here and writing. Please listen.''" L.S. Asekoff"

Pooling Piggybanks

Pooling Piggybanks
Public-sector investment funds (especially pension funds) have been increasingly pooled and managed by investment management firms in Ontario. Pooled asset management generates a net benefit to public-sector spending patterns by realizing benefits from economies of scale, including reducing costs associated with the duplication of fund management while also enhancing risk management. However, a focus on pooling public-sector pensions has meant that the possibility of consolidating other public-sector assets, like municipal cash reserves, has received less attention.Ontario''s local governments are accumulating significant liquidity reserves. Municipal reserves come in various forms, each symbolizing a distinct savings category. This report''s calculations show that in 2020, Ontario municipalities, counties, districts and cities held $39.7 billion in reserve funds. In the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), excess municipal reserves coincide with population and housing growth rates, while some non-GTA areas have also accrued substantial holdings. Occasionally, these savings are held in cash and equivalents. This study finds that local governments collectively held $20.1 billion in cash and temporary investments in 2020.The growth of municipal reserves and cash balances raises questions about how best to manage and utilize these funds. The point is not that municipalities are mismanaging their reserves and cash holdings. Instead, this report suggests that Ontario''s local governments could collectively benefit from pooling these reserves and cash holdings. One just needs to look at recent municipal investments as proof. In 2020, municipalities earned a return of just greater than 2 percent on their reserves through interest and investment income.Clearly, cities could be getting better investment returns. One potential solution is improving the coordination between local governments and Ontario''s public-asset management institutions such as ONE Investment and the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario (IMCO). Both are knowledgeable about municipal needs, consolidating public funds and dispersing investment returns. To implement better pooling and higher-return investments for municipal government, the Ontario government should consider legislative changes to the Municipal Act and Development Charges Act to remove limits on investment durations and improve clarity on investment pooling. With careful planning and collaboration among municipal governments, the province and other agencies, the consolidating of public funds in Ontario can benefit local governments, public agencies and the communities they serve.

Canadian Homeless Mobilities

Canadian Homeless Mobilities
This thesis examines the mobility patterns of 613 participants from the At Home/Chez Soi Research Demonstration Project on Mental Health and Homelessness who were surveyed in five Canadian cities (Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montréal, and Moncton). Participants'' mobility histories are treated as life courses: visualized using a GIS spatiotemporal analysis and complemented by examining their self-described reasons for movement (n=1,750). I contend that homeless mobilities are complex, entangled, and multiple. To better understand these mobilities, I apply relational theoretical perspectives to literature from the mobilities turn. I conceptualize mobility as composed of the relations between various actors. These relations coordinate amidst social differences, histories, and orderings of power. Together, actors and the relations between them, become more than the sum of their parts. To see mobility relationally, is to say that mobilities have emergent properties that reproduce, deepen, or ameliorate marginalization for those experiencing homelessness. I identify a series of actors and their relations composing homeless mobilities via time-space mapping, descriptive statistics, and the exploratory coding of survey data. I conclude by detailing a relational view of homeless mobilities while suggesting that expulsion is one emergent property of this system.
