The Slowworm's Song

release date: Oct 11, 2022
The Slowworm's Song
A Best Book Of 2022 (New Yorker) A Best Book Of Fall 2022 (Wall Street Journal) From Costa Award-winning and Booker Prize-shortlisted author Andrew Miller comes a tender tale of guilt, trust, and a father's yearning to atone. A harmless-looking letter drops onto the doormat in Stephen Rose's Somerset home like an unexploded bomb. It is a summons to an inquiry in Belfast, asking him to give testimony about his participation in a disastrous event during the Troubles–one he has long worked to forget. An ailing ex-soldier and recovering alcoholic, Stephen has just begun to build a fragile bond with Maggie, the adult daughter he barely knows. For two years, he has worked hard to earn her trust, but the tragedy of what occurred back in the summer of 1982 has the power to destroy their new relationship. To buy time, he decides to write her an account of his life. Part explanation, part confession, it is also a love letter to Maggie. When the moment comes that he must face what happened in Belfast that summer, the consequences are devastating––but ultimately liberating. Giving voice to those little heard in the literature of the Irish Troubles, The Slowworm's Song is an unforgettable story about a man who learns that the only way back from the underworld is up.

Tinderbox

Tinderbox
Tinderbox tells the exclusive, explosive, uninhibited true story of HBO and how it burst onto the American scene and screen to detonate a revolution and transform our relationship with television forever. The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Sex and the City, The Wire, Succession...HBO has long been the home of epic shows, as well as the source for brilliant new movies, news-making documentaries, and controversial sports journalism. By thinking big, trashing tired formulas, and killing off cliches long past their primes, HBO shook off the shackles of convention and led the way to a bolder world of content, opening the door to all that was new, original, and worthy of our attention. In Tinderbox, award-winning journalist James Andrew Miller uncovers a bottomless trove of secrets and surprises, revealing new conflicts, insights, and analysis. As he did to great acclaim with SNL in Live from New York; with ESPN in Those Guys Have All the Fun; and with talent agency CAA in Powerhouse, Miller continues his record of extraordinary access to the most important voices, this time speaking with talents ranging from Abrams (J. J.) to Zendaya, as well as every single living president of HBO—and hundreds of other major players. Over the course of more than 750 interviews with key sources, Miller reveals how fraught HBO’s journey has been, capturing the drama and the comedy off-camera and inside boardrooms as HBO created and mobilized a daring new content universe, and, in doing so, reshaped storytelling and upended our entertainment lives forever.

Now We Shall Be Entirely Free
A British soldier flees to the Hebrides for reprieve from war while something else hunts for him in this historical thriller by the author of The Crossing. When Cap. John Lacroix returns home from Spain, wounded, unconscious, and alone, he believes that he has seen the worst of what men may do. It is 1809, and in England's wars against Napoleon, the Battle of Corruna stands out as a humiliation: a once-proud army forced to retreat, civilized men reduced to senseless acts of cruelty. Slowly regaining his health, Lacroix journeys north to the misty isles of Scotland with the intent of forgetting the horrors of the war. Unbeknownst to him, however, something else has followed him back from the war—something far more dangerous than a memory . . . Raging against the Mass-Schooling Machine

release date: Dec 27, 2016
Raging against the Mass-Schooling Machine
The biggest danger for beginning teachers is to teach as they were taught. In order to create teaching identities capable of resisting the mind-numbing orthodoxies of the mass-schooling machine, beginning teachers need to interrogate the theories and practices that have shaped them as teachers. Raging against the Mass-Schooling Machine is a compelling autoethnographic account of one beginning teacher’s struggle to transform his future teaching identity by unpacking the bruising encounters that shaped him as a student. This is a must-read book for all teachers wishing to ‘teach against the grain.’ The journey from student to teacher involves almost two decades of junior, primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Few of us critique this journey to see what emotional legacies and taken-for-granted assumptions we carry from one identity to the other. If we remain unconscious of the social and cultural discourses and practices that have shaped and defined us as students and teachers, we may unwittingly reproduce the inequalities, prejudices, and traumas we experienced or observed while growing up, or resort to transmission teaching and authoritarian control because this is the formula of schooling most of us know. Empowering education relies on teachers resisting these toxic scripts and becoming agents of change.

Meditations on Christian Standing

release date: Feb 21, 2015
Meditations on Christian Standing
The following brief "Meditations" have been written chiefly with the view of helping young Christians. The subjects embraced are both fundamental and practical; and all necessary to the complete understanding of Christianity. As, the plenary inspiration and divine authority of the Scriptures are now so openly and daringly called in question by many, it is most needful for all, but especially for the young, to be well instructed and well grounded in the truth of God. "It is written," should be our watchword. One line of scripture is of more value than a thousand theories. May the Lord, in His grace, be pleased to use what has been written, for His own glory, and the good of many souls. So prays, etc., A. M. London.

Communicating Climate Science - HC 254

Communicating Climate Science - HC 254
The Government is failing to clearly and effectively communicate climate science to the public. There is little evidence of co-ordination amongst Government, government agencies and public bodies on communicating climate science, despite various policies at national and regional level to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The mandate to act on climate can only be maintained if the electorate are convinced that the Government is acting on the basis of strong scientific evidence. Ministers therefore need to do more to demonstrate that is the case and consistently reflect the Government approach in all their communications, especially with the media. The report also criticises the BBC for its reporting on the issue. It points out that BBC News teams continue to make mistakes in their coverage of climate science by giving opinions and scientific fact the same weight. The BBC is called to develop clear editorial guidelines for all commentators and presenters on the facts of climate that should be used to challenge statements, from either side of the climate policy debate, that stray too far from the scientific facts. It is important that climate science is presented separately from any subsequent policy response. Government should work with the learned societies and national academies to develop a source of information on climate science that is discrete from policy delivery, comprehensible to the general public and responsive to both current developments and uncertainties in the science

Between Dog and Wolf

release date: Nov 21, 2011
Between Dog and Wolf
Dogs are dogs and wolves are wolves. Except when they aren't! Most scientists now agree that the dog is a subspecies of wolf Canis lupus familiaris. And while most wolves look and act differently from most dogs, it can be very hard to make accurate identifications, especially since wolves and dogs can and do interbreed and certain breeds of dogs look and act a lot like wolves. Having spent years employed at Wolf Park, in Indiana, authors Jessica Addams and Andrew Miller have encountered hundreds of so-called wolves that turned out to be dogs, hybrids that exhibit the characteristics of both wolves and dogs, and even pure wolves that act like dogs. Between Dog and Wolf takes a fascinating look at how wolves and dogs are related, why they can be so hard to tell apart and what rescue organizations need to know when they encounter a canine of unknown origins. You will learn: How and why there are so many misconceptions about wolf behavior. What evolutionary forces turned good social hunters (wolves) into animals whose key adaptation was to become good with people (dogs). Which physical and behavioral characteristics displayed by an animal tend to indicate it's a dog vs. a wolf usually! The state of DNA testing and what it can and can't tell you about the genetic make-up of dogs and wolves. Praise for Between Dog and Wolf Well written, thoroughly researched and grounded in science, this book is a must-read for all shelter personnel, as well as anyone who wants a deeper insight into the often misunderstood animals known as wolfdogs. Nicole Wilde, author Living with Wolfdogs and Wolfdogs A-Z Intelligently written, good style, and based on an enlightened experience This could be the best dog/wolf book ever written. Ray Coppinger, co-author Dogs: A New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior and Evolution Animal shelters have to make triage decisions all the time with wolf dog hybrids which are usually deemed defacto too dangerous and euthanized unless they can be quickly placed with a qualified hybrid rescue. Addams and Miller provide a book which provides shelter workers the necessary background on behavior traits and guidelines so that decisions can be based on the behavior of the animals in front of them rather than on a questionable label that merely refers to their supposed ancestry. This book gives shelters tools to make humane decisions about animals turned in as wolf dog hybrids. Pat Goodmann, M.S., has worked with Wolf Park's wolves since 1974, plays a primary role in teaching Wolf Park's seminars, and guides its behavioral research program. Jessica Addams and Andrew Miller have nearly twenty years of collective work at Wolf Park, a non-profit education and research facility in Battle Ground, Indiana. Both started as visitors, moved up to long-term internships, and eventually became full-time staff. Besides working with wolves, they have always been involved with animals and the study of animal behavior. Their degrees are in biology and wildlife science. Jessica and Andrew own and train their own dogs and other pets, and read
