Lines Written a Few Miles Above
Inspired by Wordsworth's concern for human relationship with nature in the context of spiritual speculations, this collection of poems examines the threads of every day human living woven to the larger sublime mystery joining all of life to this beautiful planet. Quantifying Side Aspect Target Strengths of Tethered and Free-swimming Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys Molitrix) Using Split-beam Hydroacoustics

release date: Jan 01, 2022
Quantifying Side Aspect Target Strengths of Tethered and Free-swimming Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys Molitrix) Using Split-beam Hydroacoustics
Invasive bigheaded carp (Silver Carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Bighead Carp H. nobilis) are a major nuisance throughout the Midwest. Horizontally oriented (or side-looking) hydroacoustic split-beam sampling is used throughout the Mississippi River basin to quantify the density and size distribution of bigheaded carp. Accuracy of these estimates relies on target strength (TS) returns from individual fish, and orientation is generally known to affect TS. Specifically, fish swimming perpendicular to a transducer generate a stronger TS return than one swimming towards or away from it. This study conducted two experiments to determine the effect of orientation on TS return. The purpose of this study was to 1) determine the statistical relationship between the max TS return and TL of Silver Carp, 2) quantify the relationship between body orientation and the mean TS return for Silver Carp, 3) compare the relationship between body orientation and the mean TS return for Silver Carp and Smallmouth Buffalo and 4) compare echosounding the tethered and free-swimming Silver Carp. To address objectives 1-3 a study was conducted where tethered Silver Carp and Smallmouth Buffalo were echosounded at multiple orientations. Each fish was tested every 10 degrees from 0°-180° or 180°-360° (where 0° and 360° are the same). The fourth objective was addressed using a free-swimming study where Silver Carp were echosounded in a controlled environment for a week. The tethered study consisted of Silver Carp (range 436mm-715mm total length (TL)), and Smallmouth Buffalo (range 361mm-576mm TL) suspended in a 0.1ha research pond on a carousel at orientations from three categories (lateral, oblique and head/tail). The free-swimming study consisted of Silver Carp (range 425mm-790mm TL) in a 0.1ha research pond where the fish were able to behave normally, and data was collected for 7 days. Target strength returns were measured using a horizontally facing 200kHz split-beam transducer for both studies.Consistent with expectations, we found that tethered orientation affected the TS return (P =

Werecat
Twenty-two-year-old Jacks is on a mission to drown his past in alcohol when he meets the handsome drifter Benoit on a lost weekend in Montréal. It's lust and possibly something more. Jacks never suspects that a drunken hook-up will plunge him into the hidden, violent world of feline shifters. Benoit traps him in an arcane ritual to be joined as mates, from which Jacks emerges with fantastical abilities and a connection to Native traditions that were buried by his family. But his new existence pits his human instincts against his wild animal nature. When Jacks meets the young medical student Farzan, who wants to be with Jacks no matter what or who he is, Benoit's feline jealousy rages like an inferno. Jacks must figure out how to survive with his dual nature and a boyfriend who will kill any threat to their relationship. When a secret society called The Glaring shows up with a plan to exterminate humankind, Jacks will have to work quickly to gain command of Benoit's magic before the world shatters into a war of man against beast. Praise for Werecat: The Trilogy "...steamy enough to satisfy romance-genre die-hards. Peters builds interest by seamlessly moving the narrative from past to present. Jacks' struggle with identity and independence make him a sympathetic, nuanced character. An innovative take on the shape-shifter genre; this first offering in a gay fantasy series should garner a large following." - Kirkus Reviews "If you've ever wondered what it is like to live and love as a big cat, this is the book for you." - Brian Holliday, Wilde Oats Journal "I LOVED this story. A new and intriguing twist on shifters...I thought both characters were well-developed, the story interesting, the suspense intriguing and I even liked the way the sex scene played out (not gonna tell you; you'll have to read it and see)." - Cathy Brockman, The Cat's Meow: Reviews That Purrrr "What a great start to the series. Kept me hooked from the beginning to the ending." - Sean Norris, World of Diversity Reviews "Peters does a great job giving us the foundation for the series and helping us to understand Jacks and the struggles he faces." - Jay, Joyfully Jay M/M Reviews & More

Wang Yang

Wang Yang
"Without a doubt, this is one of the most exciting books I've read in years!" Imagine you are on a journey where you discover a secret world that exists inside our very own. What if you could break free from the mundane and go on an adventure to an ancient city that still has city walls? As you step inside, you instantly realize that it's not even close to what you've expected. Accompany Ryan Andrew Peters, as he becomes familiar with the intricate Chinese culture and traditions. He makes his new home in Xi'an, one of the oldest cities in China, and also the capital of the Shaanxi Province. Xi'an marks the starting point of the Silk Road and is home to the Terracotta Warriors and Horses. Here he works as an ESL English teacher. "Definitely recommended to anyone who has worked, is working, or wants to work teaching English in a foreign country"Wang Yang, a memoir follows the touching and equally gripping story of Ryan, a young man of Indian and African origin who grew up in Apartheid South Africa. He moves to China to escape his alcohol and drug fused days in London, and gets way more than he bargained for! In this story, you meet plenty of foreign teachers, Chinese staff as well as several of the students at his school. Becoming an English teacher takes a lot of practice in the beginning, but he ends up having exciting times in the classroom. The language barrier stands firm as he struggles to communicate and almost gets killed Beijing because of a deal that gets lost in translation. After that, he places his focus on learning Mandarin Chinese, which then unlocks new doors to the colorful Chinese culture. As he makes friends, their lives become intertwined, which portrays an insight into the undercurrents of the Chinese culture."It's raw and honest. Hilarious and heartbreaking."The Chinese food culture is another new challenge because monks are known to be the only vegetarians in the country. He learns about the variations of mushrooms, edible fungus and spends many a night sitting on miniature chairs at street food stalls while sipping on the local beer. He also passes many nights in the underground gay bars. The nightlife in Xi'an is phenomenal and he finds himself spiraling out of control once again as he slips into another destructive lifestyle. Alcoholism gets the better of him and he faces constant calamities that eventually lead to a breakthrough in his life. More traumatic events unravel around him everyday, such as the Sichuan earthquake that kills over 70,000 people, leaving him to wonder what the meaning of life really is. "A portrayal of physical, emotional and spiritual conflict; desire and talent."As he starts singing in a Terracotta Warrior themed bar, he meets a guitarist he falls in love with, allowing him to explore love from an alternative perspective. It won't be easy, but it is guaranteed to be an adventure to remember! Follow Ryan Andrew Peters as he barrels through a life of pain, adventure, love and whimsical hope. It's a travel memoir that readers cling to until the very last hypnotizing page!

Ship Decoration, 1630–1780

release date: Oct 23, 2013
Ship Decoration, 1630–1780
This book is a detailed comparative study of the decorative work figurehead, topside ornamentation and stern gallery design carried by the ships of the major maritime states of Europe in the zenith of the sailing era. It covers both warships and the most prestigious merchant ships, the East Indiamen of the great chartered companies. The work began life in the year 2000 when the author was commissioned to carry out research for an ambitious project to build a full-size replica of a Swedish East Indiaman, which produced a corpus of information whose relevance stretched way beyond the immediate requirements of accurately decorating the replica. In tracking the artistic influences on European ship decoration, it became clear that this was essentially the story of the baroque style, its dissemination from France, and its gradual transformation into distinct national variations in Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. It is an inherently visual subject and the book illustrates developments with numerous photographs of contemporary ship models, paintings and plans, as well as the author's own interpretive illustrations of details. As the first major work on the topic for nearly a century, it will be of obvious appeal to ship modellers and historians, but with comparative examples drawn from architecture and sculpture, it also makes a broader contribution to the history of the applied arts.
