Royal Australian And New Zealand College Of Psychiatrists Clinical Practice Guidelines For The Treatment Of Anxiety Disorders

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Royal Australian And New Zealand College Of Psychiatrists Clinical Practice Guidelines For The Treatment Of Anxiety Disorders
ObjectivesTo provide guidance for the treatment of adults with panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and generalised anxiety disorder. Background and aimsIn 2018, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) published its clinical practice guidelines on the treatment of panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and generalised anxiety disorder. Although anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental health conditions in the community, many people do not seek treatment. The guidelines aim to help address this issue by clearly outlining the conditions and evidence for their treatment.Materials and methodsA systematic review of the literature informed the guidelines. Evidence-based and consensus-based recommendations were formulated by synthesising the evidence from efficacy studies, considering effectiveness in routine practice, accessibility and availability of treatments in Australia and New Zealand, potential for fidelity, acceptability to patients, safety and costs. Public consultation and peer review informed the final version.ResultsThe guidelines recommend a pragmatic approach beginning with psychoeducation and advice on lifestyle factors, then initial treatment selected in collaboration with the patient from evidence-based options, taking into account symptom severity, patient preference, accessibility and cost. Recommended initial treatment options for all three anxiety disorders are cognitiveu2013behavioural therapy (face-to-face or delivered by computer, tablet or smart-phone application), pharmacotherapy (a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor together with advice about graded exposure to anxiety triggers), or the combination of cognitiveu2013behavioural therapy and pharmacotherapy.ConclusionsThese guidelines provide up-to-date recommendations and advice on the management of anxiety disorders.ReferenceAndrews G, Bell C, Boyce P, Gale C, Lampe L, Marwat O, Rapee R, Wilkins G (2018) Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.
