Brontes: Selected Poems
The Bronte sisters lives and works have become modern-day cultural touchstones. Emily Bronte, best known for her novel WUTHERING HEIGHTS, began writing poetry first and, before her untimely death, wrote some of the most touching and emotive poems which often reflected the landscape of her Yorkshire home. Charlotte Bronte, whose novel JANE EYRE has had numerous TV and film adaptations, took responsibility for finding a home for their work. In her own words, '' We had very early cherished the dream of one day becoming authors''. Anne Bronte, author of AGNES GREY, often used autobiographical elements in her poems, giving us a hints of the struggles and turmoil of her life. These poems offer glimpses of the joys and sorrows of the Brontes and are a beautifully compelling introduction to their writing and lives.

Tells the story of Agnes Grey, a governess, as she works within families of the English gentry. Scholarship and comments by Anne''s sister Charlotte Brontë suggest the novel is largely based on Anne Brontë''s own experiences as a governess for five years. Like her sister Charlotte''s novel Jane Eyre, it addresses what the precarious position of governess entailed and how it affected a young woman.

Agnes Grey

Agnes Grey
Agnes Grey is an autobiographical novel which recounts the experience of a young governess born of a financially-ruined clergyman. During England''s Victorian period, there wasn''t much else for a respectable and intelligent young woman to do: you were either wealthy and had governesses to care for your children, or you were, well, a governess yourself. Such was Anne''s life, and the life of her protagonist. Agnes goes to work for two families, the Bloomfields and the Murrays, who are not so much the virtuous Victorian bourgeois, but are the corrupt and callous, but aren''t If one were to read the novel for its realistic depiction of life as a governess, it''s an incredibly accurate account: the spoiled kids, the sneering servants, the aloof parents with their yapping dogs. If one were to look at Agnes Grey with contemporary eyes, one could see her as a nanny working for a rich couple today in London or New York of today.

Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell
How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Formatted for e-reader Illustrated About Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell by Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell was a volume of poetry published jointly by the three Bront sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne in 1846 (see 1846 in poetry), and their first work to ever go in print. To evade contemporary prejudice against female writers, the Bront sisters adopted masculine first names. All three retained the first letter of their first names: Charlotte became Currer Bell, Anne became Acton Bell, and Emily became Ellis Bell. However, the sisters decided to continue writing for publication and began work on their first novels, which became commercial successes. Following the success of Charlotte''s Jane Eyre in 1848, and after the deaths of Emily and Anne, the second edition of this book (printed in 1850 by Smith & Elder) fared much better, with Charlotte''s additions of previously unpublished poetry by her two late sisters. It is believed that there are fewer than ten copies in existence with the Aylott and Jones'' title-page.

She lives there in strict seclusion under the assumed name Helen Graham and very soon finds herself the victim of local slander. Poems of the Bronte Sisters
Poetry reflecting the early Victorian trends in literature. “Love is like the wild rose-briar;/Friendship like the holly-tree./The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms,/But which will bloom most constantly?”-Love and Friendship A volume of poetry written by the Bronte sisters described by Emily, the middle sister, as “ crude thoughts of the unripe mind”.

Agnes Grey, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall

release date: Apr 03, 2012
Agnes Grey, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
The only one-volume hardcover edition of the two uncommonly powerful novels written by the youngest of the famous Brontë sisters. Anne Brontë wrote these two fantastically successful novels just before her tragically early death, both of them in a much more grittily realistic mode than the more romantic ones favored by her sisters. Agnes Grey, the story of a governess working for disdainful and cruel employers, is a wrenching account of the desperate straits faced by Victorian women without money or husband. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall tells a story that was shocking for its time: a woman leaves her alcoholic and abusive husband in order to protect their young son and must live in hiding to prevent the law from taking her child away from her. These novels have become classics not only by dint of the subtle and ironic force of Anne Brontë''s prose but because of the passionate indictments of social injustice that animate them.
