A Likely Story

release date: Dec 01, 2000
A Likely Story
A Likely Story is an extraordinary series of tales that will capture your heart and imagination. It is told with wonderful humor and profound poignancy. Dr. Adams is a master craftsman at creating indelible word pictures. Anyone who has paid attention to the mysteries and insights that have occurred during their own lives will identify with these marvelous vignettes. It is a delightful and emotional blend of reminiscences, victories and defeats. All who read it will want to share these marvelous tales with everyone they love. A Likely Story captures the essence of life whether it is in a small, rural community or a huge metropolis. It is a book you won''t soon forget. A Likely Story appears to be an autobiography. However, its true identity is soon revealed. This is a gripping, page-turning story of the American experience. For those who have also lived through Glenn''s experiences there is an immediate and powerful connection. For those who haven''t, Glenn''s story foreshadows the pain, hope, joy and eventually triumph that life can bring. Chad Lewis, Everett, WA A Likely Story covers the extraordinary events in the author''s life from the age of eight into his seventh decade. This is a fascinating narrative and written with candor, whether relating to the adventures of childhood, the sometimes arduous process of growing into adulthood, or the tragedies that life has a way of inflicting upon us. The thing I love most about this book is the wonderful sense of humor. I found myself laughing out loud while reading numerous accounts. This is a truly remarkable story. Audrey Ling Los Angeles, CA A Likely Story is an astonishing work so very personal and revealing, like a Neil Diamond song! Don Angell - Duxbury, MA I started reading A Likely Story last night after I went to bed and found myself laughing out loud so many times. Dr. Adams has so many tales to tell, and he tells them delightfully. I can hardly wait to finish the book so I can pass it on to the rest of my family. Evelyn Bedenbaugh North Augusta, SC I read A Likely Story as soon as it arrived. I couldn''t put it down. Its humor is wonderful, the madcap adventures, the follies and reverses of youth, and the writing is all of one piece. What emerges at the end is a love story, which is very deep yet understated. I was moved to tears at the description of Glenn''s wife leaving the hospital''s snowy parking lot as he watched from his hospital window. It is an excellent social history of life in the United States during the turbulent 50s and 60s. This is the story of a significant life and a unique human being. Jean Musser College Place, WA

Distributed Deadlock Detection for Communicating Processes

release date: Jan 01, 1986
Distributed Deadlock Detection for Communicating Processes
In a distributed system where processes communicate directly, deadlock among a set P of processes occurs when all processes in P are idle waiting for messages from other processes in P in order to start execution, but there are no messages in transit between them. For a process which suspects that it may be deadlocked to determine whether it is indeed deadlocked, it is necessary for it to query other processes. Chandy, Misra, and Haas have proposed a distributed deadlock detection algorithm which uses fixed-length queries and replies. According to this algorithm, a process which suspects it may be deadlocked initiates a query computation by querying each process from which it is waiting to receive a message. If the initiator receives one reply for each query sent out, then the initiator is deadlocked. Otherwise, if the initiator has not received all replies within a timeout period T, it assumes that it is not deadlocked. We present five algorithms which use variable-length queries and replies to detect deadlock. Instead of using timeout to indicate an absence of deadlock, these algorithms use explicit messages called informs to convey the absence of deadlock to the query computation initiator. One algorithm detects a deadlock if it exists when the query computation is initiated. the other algorithms will detect deadlock as deadlock conditions develop. Proofs of correctness are provided, along with a simulation study which compares the performance of the new algorithms with that of the algorithms with that of the algorithm by Chandy, Misra, and Haas.
