The Treasure Hunting Treasure Hunters of Gunfighter's Gulch

release date: Apr 24, 2025
The Treasure Hunting Treasure Hunters of Gunfighter's Gulch
When cowboy Mars Peters rode into Gunfighter''s Gulch on his spotless appaloosa, he had no idea he would be the spark that would ignite the waiting powder keg. The keg was placed, inadvertently, by the old prospector Cactus Percival. He used to come into Gunfighter''s Gulch now and again from the New Mexico Territory, spending silver like it was gold, and always wearing new boots. But then, one day he didn''t come back and in the years since then tales of Cactus Percival''s silver stash have grown. Was it a mine, or Spanish silver, or even something more? And then the fuse was spitted (inadvertently again) when the new schoolmarm, Miss Polly, assigned her children a research paper. The portly Heinricht Von and the unrealistically cute little Marjory are in a race to discover what happened to Cactus Percival and, more importantly, his silver. A band of outlaws is also in town, led by the desperado Lor'' Schulenberg, determined to find a map that was said to have gone down with the 3rd National Bank. A map to Cactus Percival''s silver! All of these, and a few more, are rushing to the old cinder cone west of town, determined to find the treasure of Cactus Percival before anyone else.

The Next Big Thing in School Improvement

release date: Oct 22, 2021
The Next Big Thing in School Improvement
This is a book about educational fads, why they arise, and how we might learn to live with them. Those working in schools are subject to perpetual waves of novelty in the name of school improvement. And yet, in the long term very little actually changes. Big ideas come and go, leaving only faint clues as to their existence. The trouble is that the appealing stories that take hold will never solve the fundamental problems of modern schooling. The school system is too complex, too diverse, and too uncertain to be fixed by any Big Idea. Before too long, the Next Big Thing replaces the Last Big Thing. The Next Big Thing in School Improvement brings together the unique perspectives of a policy analyst, a headteacher, and a classroom teacher, to explain why it is that the school system often resists our attempts to improve it. Drawing on the recent history of English education policy, a variety of disciplinary traditions, and the emerging field of complexity science, the authors present a new take on why the school system behaves in ways that defy our attempts to change it. This is a book about finding a better way to improve our schools. It is not the Next Big Thing, but it does explain why there will inevitably be one, and what to do when it arrives.

Agriculture and the Generation Problem

release date: Apr 15, 2020
Agriculture and the Generation Problem
Smallholder or family farms still account for 80 percent of the world''s food. However, smallholder farmer populations are ageing, and many of them have no successor. Agriculture and the Generation Problem argues that we must take generational relations seriously if we are to understand the future of farming and of rural communities.

Rural Youth, Today and Tomorrow

release date: Jan 01, 2019
Rural Youth, Today and Tomorrow
"What would it mean to develop a youth-inclusive agricultural and rural development agenda? Agriculture, and particularly smallholder farming, remains the single largest source of youth employment in most low- and middle-income countries (LIMCs), but today''s young rural men and women express little interest in agricultural futures. However, research on rural youth aspirations suggests that many young people are not averse to agriculture as such, but to agriculture''s current neglected condition and the near impossibility of becoming an independent farmer while still young, due to lack of access to land. Rural youth outmigration does not necessarily reflect a permanent, lifetime abandonment of rural life, agriculture or the possibility of a return to farming. A youth-inclusive agricultural and rural development agenda means: approaching young people not as instruments of development, but as subjects, actors and citizens; mainstreaming young people and their interests in policy dialogues, organizations and social/political movements, both locally and nationally; more effective support for small-scale agriculture and opportunities for young rural men and women to engage in farming, including provision of land and other agrarian resources as a cornerstone of rural youth policy; and investment in infrastructures that make rural places more attractive for young men and women to live and work in"--Page 4 of cover.

Cracks in the Wall

release date: May 20, 2018
Cracks in the Wall
After decades of occupation and creeping annexation, the situation on the ground in Palestine/Israel can only be described as a system of apartheid. Peace efforts have failed because of one, inconvenient truth: the Israeli maximum on offer does not meet the Palestinian minimum, or the standards of international law. But while the situation on the ground is bleak, Ben White argues that there are widening cracks in Israel''s traditional pillars of support. Opposition to Israeli policies and even critiques of Zionism are growing in Jewish communities, as well as amongst Western progressives. The election of Donald Trump has served as a catalyst for these processes, including the transformation of Israel from a partisan issue into one that divides the US establishment. Meanwhile, the Palestinian-led boycott campaign is gathering momentum, prompting a desperate backlash by Israel and its allies. With sharp analysis, Ben White says now is the time to plot a course that avoids the mistakes of the past - a way forward beyond apartheid in Palestine. The solution is not partition and ethnic separation, but equality and self-determination - for all.

Numbers Game

release date: May 22, 2016
Numbers Game
There are so many myths and misconceptions in our industry that it can sometimes be hard to separate fact from fiction. The discussion around growth and growing a rent roll suffer this dynamic, even more so that others.Growth is a numbers game; not in the sense that it is all about casting a wide net and hoping for the best, but rather in that growth is a science that can be measured, tracked and optimised. Every market can be assessed for its growth potential. Every lead source can be identified through one of five growth channels. Every agency can set market share goals for each of those channels. Every growth goal can be supported with the help of a targeted marketing campaign. Numbers Game sets out these concepts and shares powerful consumer research that explores how landlords choose agents, what drives their levels of satisfaction and what causes them to switch agencies. The research uncovers four landlord segments that Numbers Game effectively profiles, providing ideas on how an agency can target and market to those segments. Numbers Game is based on the experiences of some of the leading agencies in our industry who have broken all the conventional wisdoms and achieved levels of growth that were once considered to be impossible. The book is for those agencies that are prepared to change their thinking, overcoming preconceived ideas to build new pathways for growth.

Ruin Upon Ruin

Ruin Upon Ruin
Ruin Upon Ruin by Ben White Essays by Doug Harvey and John Hogan Hardbound, full color Dimensions: 8.75" x 11.5" x 0.5" 140 pages The Insert Blanc Monograph series continues with Ruin Upon Ruin by Ben White accompanied by a Limited Series of paintings available for sale from Insert Blanc Press. Featuring 30 paintings along with numerous details and images from White''s sketchbook, Ruin Upon Ruin by Ben White collects a number of White''s paintings into a single body of work from over the past five years. A large format, full color, hardbound edition of 140 pages with essays by Doug Harvey and John Hogan, Ruin Upon Ruin by Ben White is forthcoming in summer 2014. "Ben White conflates figures from American history and folk tales with contemporary box stores and roadside attractions, pointing to the relativity of cultural import and the collapsible nature of intellectual, philosophical and religious "progress" in America." - John Hogan, Art21, May, 2012. "Ben White''s paintings merge anachronistic personages, events, biblical narratives, and popular culture to create a fantastic, nonlinear interpretation of history. ... The incongruencies are absurd, and the absurdity itself pulls them into the present. ... It becomes our history again, on equal terms with the present and once again acceptable as subject matter for contemporary painting. Historical gravity, leavened by wit, becomes a source of pleasure and fascination." - Lara Bank, California Contemporary Art, Summer 2010 "If one were to run across one of Ben White''s paintings at a suburban garage sale or in the dusty backroom of a thrift store, one would snap it up immediately, display it prominently in one''s hip Silverlake-adjacent living room, then post it immediately on Facebook, hoping to learn more about the quixotic outsider genius that produced it. The Council of Nicaea supervising the faking of a moon landing? Unimpeachable. Liberace among the Hyenas in the Colloseum? Fabulous!"-Doug Harvey Born in 1978 in Jacksonville, FL, White studied painting, drawing, and printmaking at the Florida State University School of Art from 1997 to 2001. Two of those years were spent studying, researching, and creating work in Florence Italy, where he first began to develop a visual language that spoke to the recondite nature of established historical narratives and the visual propaganda which creates those narratives. He received his MFA from CalArts in 2003. White''s work and curatorial design have been shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions at venues such as Blythe Projects, The Torrance Art Museum, Sea and Space Explorations, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, and many others. White is the a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant for 2011-2012, and his collaborative work has been seen in Flaunt magazine. Palestinians in Israel

release date: Jan 15, 2012
Palestinians in Israel
Palestinians in Israel considers a key issue ignored by the official "peace process" and most mainstream commentators: that of the growing Palestinian minority within Israel itself. What the Israeli right-wing calls "the demographic problem," Ben White identifies as "the democratic problem," which goes to the heart of the conflict. Israel defines itself not as a state of its citizens, but as a Jewish state, despite the substantial and increasing Palestinian population. White demonstrates how the consistent emphasis on privileging one ethno-religious group over another cannot be seen as compatible with democratic values and that, unless addressed, will undermine any attempts to find a lasting peace. Individual case studies are used to complement this deeply informed study into the great, unspoken contradiction of Israeli democracy. It is a pioneering contribution which will spark debate among all those concerned with a resolution to the Israel/Palestine conflict.

Rights and Wrongs of Children's Work

release date: Nov 10, 2010
Rights and Wrongs of Children's Work
Rights and Wrongs of Children''s Work, authored by an interdisciplinary team of experts, incorporates recent theoretical advances and experiences to explore the place of labor in children''s lives and development. This groundbreaking book considers international policies governing children''s work and the complexity of assessing the various effects of their work. The authors question current child labor policies and interventions, which, even though pursued with the best intentions, too often fail to protect children against harm or promote their access to education and other opportunities for decent futures. They argue for the need to re-think the assumptions that underlie current policies on the basis of empirical evidence, and they recommend new approaches to advance working children''s well-being and guarantee their human rights. Rights and Wrongs of Children''s Work condemns the exploitation and abuse of child workers and supports the right of all children to the best quality, free education that society can afford. At the same time, the authors recognize the value, and sometimes the necessity, of work in growing up, and the reality that a "workless" childhood, without responsibilities, is not good preparation for adult life in any environment.

Buddha Bastinado Blues
From the paradox between biologic being and social doing, this poem takes the parallax view of biologic undoing and social un-being that join and condition consciousness to comfortably cling to false manifestations in emerging absences. As sublimation loses to softening in the fight over social claims, individual volition is willed to a power of powerlessness that silently accepts reprocessed heirlooms saturated in superficiality.Through the forward progression of years in reverse, rebellion and radicalism marked the times defined by historyâs nonintellectual memory because those terms were easily discounted in the subsequent anti-movements that stepped back from the perceptions of dangerous. The beat stepped back and was lost in the limits of its own misunderstanding, suddenly self-convinced it was about irresponsible freedom. But the beat was about recognizing anti-freedom and taking responsibility for it.This poem was written on the beatâs old road with the windows rolled down.
