Children of the Fog

release date: Mar 01, 2024
Children of the Fog
In the fog-drenched hills of San Francisco, siblings Lizzy and Dylan were once inseparable. It was the only way they could survive a childhood of horror and evil¿until one final bloodstained night left them near-dead orphans. Now in their twenties, each has taken a wildly different path through life: Lizzy is ambitious and polished, compulsively driven to escape her haunted past and the forbidden truth that still whispers in her soul, while her younger brother Dylan hitch-hikes across the country, homeless and half-insane, obsessed with a return of that dark realm and the sinister presence that hungered for them. But something ominous is happening in the City by the Bay. Whispers of a strange fog that floods the streets at night, of beckoning shadows and dreams of a crumbling manor aloft over the city. As Dylan had feared, the Dark Lady has returned at last, and soon there will be nowhere for brother or sister to hide.

The Journalism Manifesto

The Journalism Manifesto
Drawing on the collaborative expertise of three senior scholars, The Journalism Manifesto makes a powerful case for why journalism has become outdated and why it is in need of a long-overdue transformation. Focusing on the relevance of elites, norms and audiences, Zelizer, Boczkowski and Anderson reveal how these previously integral components of journalism have become outdated: Elites, the sources from which journalists draw much of their information and around whom they orient their coverage, have become dysfunctional; The relevance of norms, the cues by which journalists do newswork, has eroded so fundamentally that journalists are repeatedly entrenching themselves as negligible and out of sync; and because audiences have shattered beyond recognition, the correspondence between what journalists think of as news and what audiences care about can no longer be assumed. This authoritative manifesto argues that journalism has become decoupled from the dynamics of everyday life in contemporary society and outlines pathways for fixing this essential institution of democracy. It is a must-read for students, scholars and activists in the fields of journalism, media, policy, and political communication.

From Counter-Power to Counter-Pepe: The Vagaries of Participatory Epistemology in a Digital Age

From Counter-Power to Counter-Pepe: The Vagaries of Participatory Epistemology in a Digital Age
Abstract: This article reconstructs the evolution of societal and journalistic meta-discourse about the participation of ordinary citizens in the news production process. We do so through a genealogy of what we call "participatory epistemology", defined here as a form of journalistic knowledge in which professional expertise is modified through public interaction. It is our argument that the notion of "citizen participation in news process" has not simply functioned as a normative concept but has rather carried with it a particular understanding of what journalists could reasonably know, and how their knowledge could be enhanced by engaging with the public in order to produce journalistic work. By examining four key moments in the evolution of participatory epistemology, as well as the discursive webs that have surrounded these moments, we aim to demonstrate some of the factors which led a cherished and utopian concept to become a dark and dystopian one. In this, we supplement the work of Qu

Rebuilding the News

release date: Jan 18, 2013
Rebuilding the News
Breaking down the walls of the traditional newsroom, Rebuilding the News traces the evolution of news reporting as it moves from print to online. As the business models of newspapers have collapsed, author C. W. Anderson chronicles how bloggers, citizen journalists, and social networks are implicated in the massive changes confronting journalism. Through a combination of local newsroom fieldwork, social-network analysis, and online archival research, Rebuilding the News places the current shifts in news production in socio-historical context. Focusing on the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News, Anderson presents a gripping case study of how these papers have struggled to adapt to emerging economic, social, and technological realities. As he explores the organizational, networked culture of journalism, Anderson lays bare questions about the future of news-oriented media and its evolving relationship with “the public” in the digital age.

Billy and Blaze

release date: Jul 17, 2012
Billy and Blaze
The first book in the classic, beloved Billy and Blaze series, from renowned author C.W. Anderson. Billy was a little boy who “loved horses more than anything else in the world.” Imagine how happy he was when he got his very own pony for his birthday! From that day on, Billy was seldom seen without his new friend, Blaze. Riding through fields and woods, Billy and Blaze learned to trust and understand one another—and to jump over fences and fallen trees with ease. They were a great team, but were they good enough to win the gleaming silver cup at the Mason Horse Show? This is the first book in the classic Billy and Blaze series. Sensitive drawings and easy-to-read words capture the warmth and gentle understanding between a boy and his horse.
