Keats's Shakespeare - A Descriptive Study Based on New Material
This early work by Caroline F. Spurgeon was originally published in 1928 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. ''Keats''s Shakespeare - A Descriptive Study Based On New Material'' analyses the work that the great romantic poet produced on ''the Bard''. Caroline Spurgeon was born on 24 October 1869, in India. She was educated at Cheltenham Ladies College, England and at King''s College, London and also University College London. Spurgeon went on to become an esteemed literary critic, and was actually the first female professor of English literature. From 1900 onwards she lectured on the subject and was only the second female professor in England at the time. Through her various professional activities inside her own department, she participated in the academic literary-critical renaissance of the twenties and early thirties. She was an active militant in favour of women''s eligibility to academic degrees and also advocated for more opportunities for foreign women to study in British Universities.

An Examination of Terminal and Instrumental Values of Selected Oregon State University Students

release date: Jan 01, 1986
An Examination of Terminal and Instrumental Values of Selected Oregon State University Students
The purpose of this study was twofold; first, to identify the values held by Oregon State University students, and second, to determine if the values of OSU students are different from samples previously surveyed. A further purpose of the study was to develop baseline data on a cross-section of the OSU population. Form G of the Rokeach Value Survey was sent to 425 freshman and senior men and women. Subjects were selected by a computer generated random sample of the total population from Student Information System records. Three hundred eighty-six usable responses (86%) were returned and used in the data analysis. Chi-square with Yates correction was used to determine the significance of specific value differences between each of the comparison groups. In addition, the Kruskal-Wallace H test was applied to hypotheses 3-7 where original data was available. No differences were found to exist on the specific levels between the two test results. Data analysis was accomplished using a personal computer and the Lotus 1-2-3 software package. Twelve null hypotheses concerning differences in median rankings of terminal values (end-states of existence) and instrumental values (preferred modes of conduct) were tested. The results of the study provided a profile of the current OSU student population. Conclusions: current freshman women differ from those reported in 1972; current freshman men and women have similar terminal values, but differ on their instrumental values; current senior men and women differ on terminal value placement, but have highly similar instrumental values; current freshmen differ on both terminal and instrumental values from the national norms; current seniors differ from the national norms on terminal values, but are similar on instrumental values; current OSU students differ from the national norms for college students on both the terminal and instrumental values scales. In regard to specific values, OSU students value health, self-respect and true friendship as end-states of existence and honest, responsible and loving as preferred modes of conduct.

A Menu of Activities in Different Intelligence Areas to Differentiate Instruction for Upper Elementary Students Related to the Book "Because of Winn-Dixie"

A Menu of Activities in Different Intelligence Areas to Differentiate Instruction for Upper Elementary Students Related to the Book "Because of Winn-Dixie"
Today''s elementary classrooms are becoming more diverse, requiring teachers to provide effective instruction to children with a wide range of academic performance, ability, background, and interest. This work focuses on the development of a menu of differentiated instructional activities for teaching literacy to upper elementary students. The author, a former elementary teacher, worked with a faculty member and her literacy methods class of undergraduate preservice elementary teachers to develop this teaching unit based on a popular, award-winning children''s novel (DiCamillo, 2000). The menu of various activities organized in ten different intelligence areas (logical-mathematical, linguistic, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalist, moral, and spiritual) and arranged at different levels of Bloom''s taxonomy (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation) allows a teacher to easily select assignments designed to deepen comprehension or appreciation of this literary work to meet the individual needs of students. Each activity is accompanied by an example correct response so that teachers may gauge its demands. The reactions of preservice teachers to this project from beginning to end were examined. Before participation in the project, preservice teachers emphasized fame and recognition as being motivators and effects of publication. After participation in the project, they focused on the effects of the work on their employment opportunities, emphasizing a sense of accomplishment and downplaying fame/recognition. Appended are: (1) Menu of Ideas for Gardner''s Ten Intelligence Areas at Different Levels of Bloom''s Taxonomy; and (2) Acts of Kindness Writings by Preservice Teachers. (Contains 5 tables.).
