Inner Sense

release date: Apr 03, 2025
Inner Sense
Interoception is one of our most important - and most mysterious - senses. It''s how our bodies tell our brains what we''re feeling - when we''re hungry, when we''re cold, how we''re feeling in ourselves and how to respond to stress or panic. Little understood until now, unlocking its mechanics could transform mental health and wellbeing science. Caroline Williams is an expert in mind-body science. In Inner Sense, she uncovers a field that''s poised to revolutionise health, and explores groundbreaking new techniques that can improve our mental and physical wellbeing. She meets brain scientists mapping the nervous system, neurodivergent researchers working to hone their interoception skills and health practitioners investigating how this inner sense can aid mindfulness, treat eating disorders and help find a sense of calm. Combining science, medicine, mindfulness and physical therapy, Inner Sense is the first book to bring this exciting new field of medicine to a general readership.

Saudi Interventions in Yemen

release date: Jul 29, 2020
Saudi Interventions in Yemen
This book explains the Saudi decision to launch a direct military intervention in Yemen in 2015 by comparing it with the monarchy’s response to Egyptian intervention into Yemen in 1962. It does so through the lens of domestic politics by tracing the monarchy’s response to the opposition in both time periods, and how this was informed by the different regional contexts of the 1960s and the 2011 Arab Spring. The study argues that Saudi Arabia enhanced its own institutions, including a pan-Islamic ideological justification to rule, in response to aggression from Egypt and its revolutionary pan-Arab ideology. This contributed to a relatively cautious Saudi foreign policy in response to regional threats from Arab nationalism, along with a strategy of co-optation within the kingdom. In contrast, the non-ideological threat embodied in the Arab Spring posed a more existential danger to Saudi legitimacy. The new crown prince manipulated the regime’s sense of anxiety from this to consolidate power through further scapegoating of the Shi’a minority, exacerbated tensions with foreign rivals, and, most blatantly, the 2015 intervention in Yemen. Comparing Saudi foreign policy changes from the Arab nationalist period to the post-Arab Spring period, this volume is a valuable resource for scholars and students interested in political science, history, international relations and Middle East politics.

Ok, I'll Do it Myself
Selected from the Caroline F. Schimmel Collectionof Women in the American Wilderness, these one hundred and forty-five books, photographs, manuscripts, and memorabilia by one hundred and one women and one man, dating from 1682 to 2015, reflect the sweep of women''s experiences in the American wilderness. They range from Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (1705), Maria Sibylla Merian''s monumental study of the flora and fauna of Surinam, hand-printed and probably hand-colored by her, to sharpshooter and entertainer Annie Oakley''s travel trunk and gloves, and a souvenir envelope with a one-inch red heart through which she shot from a distance of twenty feet. This is the revised second edition of the full-color catalogue that documents an exhibition of the same name.

Intonation and Prosodic Structure

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Intonation and Prosodic Structure
This book provides a state-of-the-art survey of intonation and prosodic structure. Taking a phonological perspective, it shows how morpho-syntactic constituents are mapped to prosodic constituents according to well-formedness conditions. Using a tone-sequence model of intonation, it explores individual tones and how they combine, and discusses how information structure affects intonation in several ways, showing tones and melodies to be ''meaningful'' in that they add a pragmatic component to what is being said. The author also shows how despite a superficial similarity, languages differ in how their tonal patterns arise from tone concatenation. Lexical tones, stress, phrase tones, and boundary tones are assigned differently in different languages, resulting in great variation in intonational grammar, both at the lexical and sentential level. The last chapter is dedicated to experimental studies of how we process prosody. The book will be of interest to advanced students and researchers in linguistics, and particularly in phonological theory.

A Woman's Philosophy of Love

A Woman's Philosophy of Love
Published in 1893 "A WOMAN''S PHILOSOPHY OF LOVE" is the outcome of thirty-five years of thought, study, and experience. It is not a book for babes, nor possibly for persons of a darkened and prurient mind; but it is believed that there is, both in this country and elsewhere, a large and growing class of cultivated and thoughtful people, who see in the relations between men and women, the elementary principle of all civil order, the keynote of all social progress, and who will welcome a thoughtful and dispassionate discussion of some of those vexed questions of right and priority, which are forcing themselves into every field of thought and labor in Christendom. Such a discussion, if it be at all thorough, must necessarily include some topics which it is difficult to present without offence; but the author has at least conscientiously endeavored to do justice to the truth, without disregarding those principles of delicacy which are rightly recognized as the safeguards of society. The measure of her success, it must be left for the public to decide.

The Human Prefrontal Cortex and the Evolution of the Social Brain

release date: Jan 01, 2013
The Human Prefrontal Cortex and the Evolution of the Social Brain
The prefrontal cortex is implicated in the majority of higher order processes of the primate brain. This region is especially important to the study of human evolution, because it is precisely the complex cognitive and socio-emotional processes of the prefrontal cortex that are thought to characterize uniquely human behavior. Here I will explore the role of the prefrontal cortex in the evolution of the social brain in humans. Great Apes, as the extant representatives of the ancestral lineages closely related to our own hominin lineage, are extremely useful to study in a comparative context with humans in order to gain insight into the neuroanatomical changes implicated in the evolution of social cognition, and such findings will be reviewed here. Human neurological pathologies with distinct social phenotypes are also a powerful area of study in the evolution of the social brain, because comparative studies of pathological individuals with typically developing controls allows for the possibility to associate neural correlates with specific social behaviors that may have been acted upon during the course of human brain evolution. I will focus on three such pathologies: Autism Spectrum Disorder, schizophrenia, and Williams Syndrome. Each of the pathologies have specific social phenotypes that suggest abnormalities of social functions that would have been critical to the evolution of the social brain. Lastly, I will present the findings of an original comparative research investigation of the prefrontal cortex in Williams Syndrome, and discuss the possible evolutionary implications of my findings.
