Implications of Psychologically Informed Physical Therapy on Patients with Chronic Pain and Psychosocial Factors

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Implications of Psychologically Informed Physical Therapy on Patients with Chronic Pain and Psychosocial Factors
ABSTRACT: Background: Patients with chronic pain often present to physical therapy clinics with psychosocial factors including depression and fear-avoidance which impede their physical performance in daily life. Psychologically informed physical therapy (PIP) aims to address these psychosocial factors as they pertain to the physical impairments of the patient. The purpose of this review is to assess the effectiveness of PIP on patients with chronic pain and psychosocial risk factors. Method: A literature review was performed from September 2016 to April 2018 using the databases Pubmed, CINAHL, MEDLINE Complete, and PEDro. Inclusion criteria consisted of an adult population, the English language, retrieved from a peer-reviewed journal, chronic pain lasting greater than 12 weeks, psychosocial risk factors, PIP intervention and functional outcome measures of quality of life (QOL) or pain. Exclusion criteria consisted of studies in which the interventions of PIP were administered by untrained physical therapists, or the treatment was applied from someone other than a physical therapist. Results: Final search strings yielded 48 articles for review; 6 articles were selected to aide in the clinical decision, with one case report not used as there was mismatch between case subject and the patient case inspiring this research effort. Therefore, 5 articles were used for final appraisal to help guide the clinical decision process. Discussion/Conclusion: Based on current literature, PIP is an effective approach to intervention for a patient with chronic pain and psychosocial factors as it has been shown to improve selfreported function, QOL and pain level. Techniques such as graded exposure, activity pacing, and cognitive restructuring are useful to use as therapeutic interventions in addressing the psychosocial components of chronic pain.

The Origins of the Present Troubles in Northern Ireland

release date: Jul 15, 2014
The Origins of the Present Troubles in Northern Ireland
For quarter of a century now the British Army has been involved in a bloody and protracted conflict in Northern Ireland. This book looks at the roots of the current struggle and of British military intervention, setting both in the longer perspective of the Anglo-Irish Troubles. It is, however, more than a chronicle of military strategies and sectarian strife: it seeks to place the use of the army within the context of the wider British experience of dealing with political violence, and to address the broader issue of how democratic states have responded to both ethnic conflict and the threat of `internal'' disorder

The Cuban Missile Crisis

release date: Jan 01, 2014
The Cuban Missile Crisis
In July 1962, in an effort to preserve an accurate record of Presidential decision-making in a highly charged atmosphere of conflicting viewpoints, strategies and tactics, John F. Kennedy installed hidden recording systems in the Oval Office and in the Cabinet Room. The result is a priceless historical archive comprising some 265 hours of taped material. JFK was elected president when Civil Rights tensions were near the boiling point, and Americans feared a nuclear war. Confronted with complex dilemmas necessitating swift and unprecedented action, President Kennedy engaged in intense discussion and debate with his cabinet members and other advisors. Now, in conjunction with the fiftieth anniversary of the Kennedy presidency, the John F. Kennedy Library and historian Ted Widmer have carefully selected the most compelling and important of these remarkable recordings for release, fully restored and re-mastered onto two 75-minute CDs for the first time. Listening In represents a uniquely unscripted, insider account of a president and his cabinet grappling with the day-to-day business of the White House and guiding the nation through a hazardous era of uncertainty. Accompanied by extensively annotated transcripts of the recordings, and with a foreword by Caroline Kennedy, Listening In delivers the story behind the story in the unguarded words and voices of the decision-makers themselves. Listening In covers watershed events, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Space Race, Vietnam, and the arms race, and offers fascinating glimpses into the intellectual methodology of a circumspect president and his brilliant, eclectic brain trust. Just as the unique vision of President John F. Kennedy continues to resonate half a century after his stirring speeches and bold policy decisions, the documentary candor of Listening In imparts a vivid, breathtaking immediacy that will significantly expand our understanding of his time in office.

Suspect Devices

release date: May 01, 2013
Suspect Devices
In the wake of the American-led invasion of Afghanistan and then Iraq, one weapon in particular has come to dominate the image we have of these wars-the ''"Improvised Explosive Device" or IED. Dramatized by films such as The Hurt Locker and omnipresent in the media because of its continuing toll on allied service personnel, especially bomb-disposal specialists, the IED has become the ubiquitous asymmetric ''weapon of the weak'' and a major threat to Western foreign policy objectives and military morale. In this rigorous book on the IED phenomenon, Caroline Kennedy argues that it is indeed a "ubiquitous weapon," but that it is not new and has been a feature of the battlefield for much longer than we imagine. She shows how the IED became a thorn in the side of the "Western way of war" and how its increasing proliferation into criminal organisations and use in "ordinary" forms of violence represents a step change in threats to both military and civil order and a potent challenge to Western interests at many levels. Suspect Devices offers a graphic interpretation of the power, both actual and symbolic, of this durable and potent weapon, and an important and urgent reflection on its contemporary relevance.

Poems to Learn by Heart

release date: Mar 26, 2013
Poems to Learn by Heart
For this companion to her New York Times best-selling collection A Family of Poems, Caroline Kennedy has hand-selected more than a hundred of her favorite poems that lend themselves to memorization. Some are joyful. Some are sad. Some are funny and lighthearted. Many offer layers of meaning that reveal themselves only after the poem has been studied so closely as to be learned by heart. In issuing the challenge to memorize great poetry, Caroline Kennedy invites us to a deeply enriching experience. For as she reminds us, “If we learn poems by heart, not only do we have their wisdom to draw on, we also gain confidence, knowledge and understanding that no one can take away.” Illustrated with gorgeous, original watercolor paintings by award-winning artist Jon J Muth , this is truly a book for all ages, and one that families will share again and again. Caroline’s thoughtful introductions shed light on the many ways we can appreciate poetry, and the special tradition of memorizing and reciting poetry that she celebrates within her own family.

Security Studies: the Basics

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Security Studies: the Basics
Traditional studies of security focused on the survival of states and the impact of wars, the development of technology and the nuclear deterrent. Since the end of the Cold War, however, a new range of threats has been added to the security lexicon and it is now common to stress that human survival is threatened not just by the use of military power by a hostile state but also by environmental damage, AIDS/HIV, water shortages, famine and plague. Security: The Basics is a concise introduction to the contemporary study of security issues and explores key questions such as: Should security be focused on the state or the individual? How has the nature of security changed since 9/11? How is the security of women or children affected by war, poverty and disease? To what extent will the future of security be about cyber-security? Featuring a range of international case studies, suggestions for further reading, a glossary and notes on key thinkers, Security: The Basics is the ideal starting point for anyone interested in the study of the struggle for survival in the 21st century.

Jacqueline Kennedy

release date: Dec 27, 2011
Jacqueline Kennedy
To mark John F. Kennedy''s centennial, celebrate the life and legacy of the 35th President of the United States. In 1964, Jacqueline Kennedy recorded seven historic interviews about her life with John F. Kennedy. Now, for the first time, they can be read in this deluxe, illustrated eBook. Shortly after President John F. Kennedy''s assassination, with a nation deep in mourning and the world looking on in stunned disbelief, Jacqueline Kennedy found the strength to set aside her own personal grief for the sake of posterity and begin the task of documenting and preserving her husband''s legacy. In January of 1964, she and Robert F. Kennedy approved a planned oral-history project that would capture their first-hand accounts of the late President as well as the recollections of those closest to him throughout his extraordinary political career. For the rest of her life, the famously private Jacqueline Kennedy steadfastly refused to discuss her memories of those years, but beginning that March, she fulfilled her obligation to future generations of Americans by sitting down with historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., and recording an astonishingly detailed and unvarnished account of her experiences and impressions as the wife and confidante of John F. Kennedy. The tapes of those sessions were then sealed and later deposited in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum upon its completion, in accordance with Mrs. Kennedy''s wishes. The resulting eight and a half hours of material comprises a unique and compelling record of a tumultuous era, providing fresh insights on the many significant people and events that shaped JFK''s presidency but also shedding new light on the man behind the momentous decisions. Here are JFK''s unscripted opinions on a host of revealing subjects, including his thoughts and feelings about his brothers Robert and Ted, and his take on world leaders past and present, giving us perhaps the most informed, genuine, and immediate portrait of John Fitzgerald Kennedy we shall ever have. Mrs. Kennedy''s urbane perspective, her candor, and her flashes of wit also give us our clearest glimpse into the active mind of a remarkable First Lady. In conjunction with the fiftieth anniversary of President Kennedy''s Inauguration, Caroline Kennedy and the Kennedy family are now releasing these beautifully restored recordings on CDs with accompanying transcripts. Introduced and annotated by renowned presidential historian Michael Beschloss, these interviews will add an exciting new dimension to our understanding and appreciation of President Kennedy and his time and make the past come alive through the words and voice of an eloquent eyewitness to history.

She Walks in Beauty

She Walks in Beauty
In She Walks in Beauty, Caroline Kennedy has once again marshaled the gifts of our greatest poets to pay a very personal tribute to the human experience, this time to the complex and fascinating subject of womanhood. Inspired by her own reflections on more than fifty years of life as a young girl, a woman, a wife, and a mother, She Walks in Beauty draws on poetry''s eloquent wisdom to ponder the many joys and challenges of being a woman. Kennedy has divided the collection into sections that signify to her the most notable milestones, passages, and universal experiences in a woman''s life, and she begins each of these sections with an introduction in which she explores and celebrates the most important elements of life''s journey. The collection includes works by Elizabeth Bishop, Sharon Olds, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Mary Oliver, Pablo Neruda, W. H. Auden, Adrienne Rich, Sandra Cisneros, Anne Sexton, W. S. Merwin, Dorothy Parker, Queen Elizabeth I, Lucille Clifton, Naomi Shahib Nye, and W. B. Yeats. Whether it''s falling in love, breaking up, friendship, marriage, motherhood, or growing old, She Walks in Beauty is a priceless resource for anyone, male or female, who wants a deeper understanding and appreciation of what it means to be a woman.

The Right to Privacy

release date: Sep 29, 2010
The Right to Privacy
Can the police strip-search a woman who has been arrested for a minor traffic violation? Can a magazine publish an embarrassing photo of you without your permission? Does your boss have the right to read your email? Can a company monitor its employees'' off-the-job lifestyles--and fire those who drink, smoke, or live with a partner of the same sex? Although the word privacy does not appear in the Constitution, most of us believe that we have an inalienable right to be left alone. Yet in arenas that range from the battlefield of abortion to the information highway, privacy is under siege. In this eye-opening and sometimes hair-raising book, Alderman and Kennedy survey hundreds of recent cases in which ordinary citizens have come up against the intrusions of government, businesses, the news media, and their own neighbors. At once shocking and instructive, up-to-date and rich in historical perspective, The Right to Private is an invaluable guide to one of the most charged issues of our time. "Anyone hoping to understand the sometimes precarious state of privacy in modern America should start by reading this book."--Washington Post Book World "Skillfully weaves together unfamiliar, dramatic case histories...a book with impressive breadth."--Time
