Can I Just Hide in Bed 'til Jesus Comes Back?

release date: Jun 06, 2017
Can I Just Hide in Bed 'til Jesus Comes Back?
Depression, fear, a sense of unworthiness, and unfulfilled dreams can make women retreat to their beds—figuratively and literally—and refuse to face life. Yet most of the time, hiding in bed makes matters worse. Who needs emotional bedsores? Authors Martha Bolton and Christin Ditchfield gently show women how to climb out from under their emotional bedcovers, face their fears and doubts, and step into the lives God has planned for them. Can I Just Hide in Bed ’til Jesus Comes Back? faces down the fear, depression, and unfulfilled dreams that cripple many women to the point of wanting to crawl in bed—for the rest of their lives. Compiled as a collection of short, mostly humorous and warmhearted stories, it offers readers practical, concrete steps to help them move forward when they are ready. Essays are interspersed with special humor features such as “Top Ten” lists, while “Whenever You’re Ready” sections offer Scriptures, journaling questions, and practical suggestions for “putting your feet on the floor” and “taking a few steps forward.” The book addresses four themes: Facing feelings of fear, anxiety, discouragement, and depression Facing people and relationship issues Facing the pain of grief and loss Facing life—and getting yours back

Amazing Grace (Pack of 25)

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Amazing Grace (Pack of 25)
Amazing. It's the only way to describe the incredible transformation that took place in the life of John Newton. Newton was born in London in 1725. His mother died when he was seven. His father sent him to sea at age eleven. Working first as a cabin boy and then a deckhand, John was exposed to a life of drunkenness, profanity and immorality -- and he embraced it. Soon, John surpassed his peers in outrageous behavior. Sharp-witted and sarcastic, he wrote offensive songs mocking the ship's officers and expressing his contempt for their authority. He amused himself by inventing new swear words and leading his peers on reckless and dangerous escapades. He frequently deserted his post. Still in his teens, John was briefly enslaved on an African plantation and nearly died. But instead of sobering him, the experience only served to strengthen his rebellious spirit. After Newton regained his freedom, he served time in the British Navy and eventually became captain of his own slave ship. As a slave trader, Newton's heart grew even harder He earned a reputation for being a foul-mouthed, ill-tempered man, despised by his subordinates and superiors alike. He cared for no one but himself and sought nothing but his own pleasure. Then one night, John Newton hit rock bottom. He had been punished for misbehavior by being publicly humiliated, beaten, and stripped of his rank. His attempts to regain his position had failed. No one cared to take up his cause. Now caught in a fierce storm, he came face to face with a gripping fear of death. As the waves pounded the ship and filled his cabin with water, terror filled Newton's heart. He fought desperately to save the ship, bailing water and plugging holes in the hull with the ship's sails, burlap bags, even his own clothing. As an experienced sailor, John knew he had little chance of survival. And he was not ready to face eternity. Memories of his childhood came flooding back -- the Bible verses and hymns his God-fearing mother had taught him, her prayers on his behalf. John tried to cry out to God for mercy, but he was stopped abruptly by the thought of how little he deserved it. How could he turn to God for help, when he had ignored Him for so long? John spent a harrowing night in deep soul-searching. The following day, the storm subsided. Miraculously, the battered ship found safe harbor. It was then, Newton said, that he became convinced that "there is a God that hears and answers prayers." He discovered anew the love of God expressed in Scripture: "God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved" (John 3:16,17). In the midst of the storm, Newton's eyes had been opened. He realized that he was a sinner, in need of a Savior. For the first time, he understood the meaning of God's grace. Repenting of the sins of his past, he surrendered his life to God completely. In an instant, he became a new man. Years later, as he reflected on his experience, Newton penned the words: Amazing Grace -- how sweet the sound -- that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come; 'tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. At the age of 39, the former slave trader became a pastor. He dedicated the rest of his life to sharing with others the good news of the gospel: that Jesus Christ had come to 'seek and save the lost.' (Luke 19:10) Newton led the abolitionist movement in Great Britain, exposing the evils of slavery and fighting to outlaw the vile trade he had once engaged in. In his epitaph, he summed up his life this way: John Newton, Clerk, Once an infidel and libertine, A servant of slaves in Africa, Was by the rich mercy of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Preserved, restored, pardoned, And appointed to preach the faith he Had long laboured to destroy... Like Newton, you, too, can experience God's amazing grace -- no matter who you are or how much you have sinned. You can begin your own life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. You might pray something like this: "Dear God, I realize that I have been lost in my sins and blind to your truth. I know now that you sent your Son to die on the cross for me--to pay the penalty for my sin. Please forgive me. Come into my life and change me by your grace. In Jesus' Name, Amen."

A Pumpkin Tale (Pack of 25)

release date: Aug 01, 2003
A Pumpkin Tale (Pack of 25)
Sarah and Jacob stood by the window, watching. They could hardly wait for Daddy to get home from work. Today was the day he had promised to help them make a jack-o-lantern. At 5:30 on the dot, Daddy's car pulled into the driveway. "Are you guys ready to go pick out a pumpkin?" he called. "Hooray!" yelled Jacob. "Let's go!" cried Sarah, running out to the car. In a few minutes they arrived at the biggest pumpkin patch the children had ever seen. There were hundreds and hundreds of pumpkins. Big ones, small ones. Round ones, long ones. Yellow and orange and green. Sarah and Jacob walked up and down every row, searching for just the right pumpkin for their jack-o-lantern. "There--look at that one!" Sarah pointed. It was the roundest, largest, brightest orange pumpkin in the patch. Jacob could hardly get his arms around it. "I think you found the perfect pumpkin," Daddy smiled. They carried it back to the car. When they got home, Daddy placed the pumpkin on the kitchen table. As he began to carve the jack-o-lantern, he said, "Do you know that being a Christian is a lot like being a pumpkin?" "It is?" asked Sarah. Jacob looked puzzled. "What do you mean?" "Well," said Daddy, "first God picks each one of us out of the patch. He chooses us to be His very own. Next, He cleans us from the inside out. He scoops all the yucky stuff out of our hearts--the sin--the bad things we say or do. After that, He puts a great big smile on our faces. His light shines in our hearts. Then everyone can see His love in us!" "Ohhh." Sarah thought about this for a moment. "Daddy, I want God's light to shine in my heart." "Me, too. Me, too," said Jacob. "I'm glad," Daddy replied. "You know, the Bible says that our sin separates us from God. It keeps His light from shining in us. So God sent His Son Jesus to take away our sins by dying on the cross. Three days later, He rose to life again, and now He lives in Heaven. If we ask Him to, He will come and live in our hearts. Then His light will shine in us." "Let's ask Him right now," said Sarah. Would you like Jesus to live in your heart? Would you like God's light to shine in you? Just pray, "Dear God, I'm sorry for the bad things I've done. Thank You for sending Jesus to take away my sins. Please come into my heart and fill my life with Your light. Help others to see Your love in me. Amen."

For the Long Haul (Pack of 25)

release date: Jun 01, 2003
For the Long Haul (Pack of 25)
There's nothing like the freedom of the open road. . . . No stuffy office cubicle, no piles of paperwork, no supervisor looking over your shoulder every five minutes. Out on the road, you're free--free to make your own choices and to be yourself. Of course, some days the road is a little too long. You miss your loved ones. Traffic gets heavy or the weather gets rough. Your rig breaks down. You finally get going again, only to see the empty miles stretching out before you like an eternity. The loneliness can be overwhelming--not to mention the temptation. At times like this, you wish you had a friend, someone to share the journey. Someone to keep you company--and on the right track. Someone to be there, not just for a short stretch, but for the long haul. The Bible tells us there is Someone who wants to share life's journey with us. God understands our longings; He knows our deepest needs. He created us for companionship. He designed us to find our deepest fulfillment in a personal relationship with Him. But every one of us has rebelled against God and tried to live life on our own terms. We've disobeyed the "rules of the road." We've rejected God's road map, ignored His directions, and chosen to go our own way (Isaiah 53:6). The Bible calls this "sin"--and it carries a stiff penalty: eternal separation from God. "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death" (Proverbs 16:25). God, in His loving-kindness, couldn't bear to see us destroy ourselves. He didn't want us to be separated from Him forever, so He provided a way to bring us back to Himself. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son [Jesus], that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Jesus set an example for us by taking the right road. He led a perfect and sinless life of obedience to His Father. Then--although He didn't have to--Jesus took the punishment we deserved and died on a cross to pay the penalty for our sins. "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). Jesus rose from the grave, crushing the power of sin and death. He made a way for us to be reconciled to God and restored to a right relationship with Him. The Bible tells us simply, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31). When we confess our sins and put our faith in Jesus Christ, He takes us down a whole new road. He shows us where to go, because He knows the way. When we're lonely or tempted to take the wrong path, Jesus keeps us company and gives us strength to stay on track (1 Corinthians 10:13). Traveling life's journey with Jesus is an adventure that never ends! Jesus said, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full!" (John 10:10). On those days when the road gets rough, we have Jesus' assurance that He will be with us for the long haul. "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5). To begin your own personal relationship with Jesus and invite Him to share life's journey with you, you might pray something like this: Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I've taken the wrong road time and time again. Please forgive me. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I invite You into my life. Guide me and direct me. Give me strength to faithfully follow the road You have chosen for me, that I might experience the joy and peace that You bring. Amen.
