Yugoslavia's Bloody Collapse

release date: Jan 01, 1997
Yugoslavia's Bloody Collapse
An incisive and revealing history of how Yugoslavia plunged into violence in the 1990s Over the past two years, the entire world watched in horror as one of Europe''s most stable countries plunged into an orgy of violence and bloodshed that has invoked comparisons to the Holocaust. Aside from empty threats and diplomatic hand wringing, the West has done little to stop the ethnic cleansing, the sieges, and the brutality that has characterized the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. Contrary to common wisdom, the hyper-violent disintegration of the former Yugoslavia is not simply and exclusively the product of inherent and irrational ethnic animosities and centuries of strife. In this engaging book, journalist Christopher Bennett traces the turning point to the 1987 struggle within the Serbian Communist party which was between adherents of a Serb nationalist ideology -embodied by Slobodan Milosevic- and the other Yugoslavs who clung to the vision of a multinational state. As soon as Milosevic gained the upper hand, he ruthlessly purged his rivals and launched a massive campaign of media indoctrination to stir up Serb nationalism. This new nationalism, which has repelled the world since 1991, is primarily Milosevic''s creation and not merely the result of historical enmity. As a student at two different Yugoslav universities in the 1980''s, Bennett witnessed firsthand many if the critical events which contributed to Yugoslavia''s destruction. He renders an incisive and accessible history, covering the period from Tito''s dictatorship to the present day.

The Ethics of Social Punishment

release date: Nov 12, 2020
The Ethics of Social Punishment
How do we punish others socially, and should we do so? In her 2018 Descartes Lectures for Tilburg University, Linda Radzik explores the informal methods ordinary people use to enforce moral norms, such as telling people off, boycotting businesses, and publicly shaming wrongdoers on social media. Over three lectures, Radzik develops an account of what social punishment is, why it is sometimes permissible, and when it must be withheld. She argues that the proper aim of social punishment is to put moral pressure on wrongdoers to make amends. Yet the permissibility of applying such pressure turns on the tension between individual desert and social good, as well as the possession of an authority to punish. Responses from Christopher Bennett, George Sher and Glen Pettigrove challenge Radzik''s account of social punishment while also offering alternative perspectives on the possible meanings of our responses to wrongdoing. Radzik replies in the closing essay.

Bosnia's Paralysed Peace

release date: Oct 01, 2011
Bosnia's Paralysed Peace
Immediately following Bosnia''s recent war, 60,000 NATO troops were deployed to help implement aspects of the Dayton Peace Agreement. A number of international institutions, including the European Commission, the IMF, the OHR, the OSCE, the World Bank, and the United Nations, as well as many development agencies, worked together to make the country whole, cushioned by generous flows of aid. Nevertheless, despite this massive commitment in resources and effort, Bosnia''s peace process can at best be described as paralyzed. Various unresolved issues threaten to revive old conflicts, and the zero-sum politics of rival ethnonational leaders threaten to disrupt permanent stability. International officials continue to claim that there is no alternative to Bosnia''s European peace path. They urge the country''s leaders to temper their rhetoric and hold fast to internationally approved reforms. Christopher Bennett argues instead that the failure to build peace is directly tied to the liberal peace model dominating international strategy. While policymakers focus on what should be in reproducing Western liberal democracy, they really should consider what is, especially in terms of ethnonational security. Bennett''s account of Bosnia''s slow historical disintegration, subsequent brutal war, and present reconstruction institutes a paradigm shift in the scholarship on securing ethnonational security within the country. It also points to a truer method for promoting self-sustaining peace.

Kierkegaard's and Heidegger's Analysis of Existence and Its Relation to Proclamation
In Kierkegaard''s and Heidegger''s Analysis of Existence and its Relation to Proclamation (1950), Løgstrup offers an original critique of these key thinkers. Arguing against their idea that ''life in the crowd'' threatens individuality, he proposes an ethic beyond social rules: a requirement to care for a person whose life is placed in your hands.

The Apology Ritual

release date: Aug 21, 2008
The Apology Ritual
Christopher Bennett presents a theory of punishment grounded in the practice of apology, and in particular in reactions such as feeling sorry and making amends. He argues that offenders have a ''right to be punished'' - that it is part of taking an offender seriously as a member of a normatively demanding relationship (such as friendship or collegiality or citizenship) that she is subject to retributive attitudes when she violates the demands of that relationship. However, while he claims that punishment and the retributive attitudes are the necessary expression of moral condemnation, his account of these reactions has more in common with restorative justice than traditional retributivism. He argues that the most appropriate way to react to crime is to require the offender to make proportionate amends. His book is a rich and intriguing contribution to the debate over punishment and restorative justice.

The Principles and Practice of Effective Leadership

release date: Sep 07, 2021
The Principles and Practice of Effective Leadership
This thought-provoking and timely book asserts that the dichotomy between leaders and managers described in much business literature fails to recognize how the two roles overlap. The book discusses techniques for senior executives based on history and neuroscience to enhance their "managerial leadership" in different environments. The ethical dilemmas of directors and executives are explored, with lessons from both leadership failures and successes. The Principles and Practice of Effective Leadership redefines "leadership" as a morally neutral activity, reflecting the impact of strategic, cultural and operational contexts on a leader’s effectiveness. The authors suggest there are universal but morally neutral techniques for effective leadership that depend on the context in which they are practiced. In Part 1, the careers and personalities of historical figures including Elizabeth Tudor, Napoleon, and Atatürk are examined. Part 2 deliberates on why leadership cannot be separated from effective management and concludes that leadership is managerial, and best encapsulated in the concept of "wayfinding." In Part 3, the authors discuss the techniques "wayfinders" can learn to be both effective and ethical, using a simple and practical framework. This insightful book is essential reading for professionals, coaches, consultants, and academics interested in techniques and ethics of leadership and executive education.
