Cet ouvrage se penche sur les représentations du catholicisme dans la littérature décadente anglaise, pour montrer le jeu d'influences qui conduit de Walter Pater aux poètes « uraniens » du début du XXe siècle, en passant par Aubrey Beardsley, Ernest Dowson, Lionel Johnson, George Moore, Frederick Rolfe, Arthur Symons et Oscar Wilde. Il se propose de mettre en lumière, à partir d'un corpus vaste et divers (poèmes, romans, nouvelles, pièces de théâtre, pamphlets, revues, oeuvres collectives, pastiches), les implications idéologiques, culturelles et esthétiques de cet imaginaire catholique, marqué tout autant par les controverses religieuses de l'époque que par les idées du Mouvement esthétique. Face au spectre fin de siècle d'une langue qui s'épuise, le catholicisme se fait écriture, offrant le vaste palimpseste de son histoire, de ses légendes et de ses textes liturgiques, que ces auteurs sont prompts à s'approprier, sur le mode sérieux de la traduction, de la citation et de l'allusion, ou sur le mode irrévérencieux de la parodie. Pour les décadents, particulièrement sensibles au rôle prépondérant de l'image, du geste et du symbole dans la liturgie, la foi et le culte de la beauté se rejoignent dans un catholicisme fantasmé, où le pittoresque et l'exotisme l'emportent souvent sur l'authenticité. Le rite, considéré avant tout pour ses qualités esthétiques, y devient l'élément central d'une religion sensuelle et poétique qui substitue l'art à la transcendance.
