MOLL FLANDERS - Daniel Defoe
Published in 1722, Moll Flanders is one of Defoe's most notable works, following the life of its eponymous heroine. The novel is a compelling story of a woman born into poverty who navigates the challenges of 17th-century England with resourcefulness and determination. Told in the first person, Moll's narrative recounts her many adventures, misfortunes, and the moral dilemmas she faces as she seeks security and respectability. Moll Flanders is more than just a tale of crime and survival; it is a complex exploration of the human condition, social mobility, and the pursuit of redemption. Defoe's portrayal of Moll's life is both realistic and sympathetic, offering a nuanced look at the choices she makes and the circumstances that shape her fate. The novel's vivid depiction of the struggles and resilience of its protagonist invites readers to reflect on themes of morality, society, and the human capacity for change.

The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (The Complete Three-Book Collection)

The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (The Complete Three-Book Collection)
Daniel Defoe's "The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" presents a masterful exploration of survival, isolation, and the human spirit through the trials of its titular character, Robinson Crusoe. This complete three-book collection captures Crusoe's harrowing journey as he becomes shipwrecked on a desolate island, where he must rely on his resourcefulness and ingenuity to navigate the perils of nature. Defoe employs a vivid prose style, rich in detail and emblematic of the early 18th-century novelistic tradition, blending realism with adventure and moral reflection, which is essential for understanding the cultural context of the era marked by exploration and imperialism. Defoe, a prominent figure of the Enlightenment, was deeply influenced by his experiences as a merchant, journalist, and pamphleteer. His own tumultuous life, which included imprisonment and financial hardship, informed his portrayal of Crusoe as a symbol of individualism and resilience. Defoe's keen observations on society, economics, and human psychology resonate throughout the narrative, making it not only a tale of adventure but also a profound commentary on self-sufficiency and the relationship between man and nature. This compelling collection is highly recommended for readers seeking an engaging narrative that transcends time. The interplay between adventure and philosophical inquiry makes it a vital text for anyone interested in literature, history, or the human condition. Defoe's classic resonates with contemporary themes of solitude, survival, and self-discovery, encouraging readers to reflect on their own existence and place in the world.

Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe Illustrated (Penguin Classics)
The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders (commonly known as simply "Moll Flanders") is a novel written by Daniel Defoe in 1722.Defoe wrote this after his work as a journalist and pamphleteer. By 1722, Defoe had become recognized as a novelist, with the success of Robinson Crusoe in 1719. His political work was tapering off at this point, due to the fall of both Whig and Tory party leaders with whom he had been associated; Robert Walpole was beginning his rise, and Defoe was never fully at home with the Walpole group. Defoe''s Whig views are nevertheless evident in the story of Moll, and the novel''s full title gives some insight into this and the outline of the plot:"The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders, Etc. Who Was Born In Newgate, and During a Life of Continu''d Variety For Threescore Years, Besides Her Childhood, Was Twelve Year a Whore, Five Times a Wife [Whereof Once To Her Own Brother], Twelve Year a Thief, Eight Year a Transported Felon In Virginia, At Last Grew Rich, Liv''d Honest, and Died a Penitent. Written from her own Memorandums."

THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE BY DANIEL DEFOE ( Classic Edition Illustrations )
I was born in the year 1632, in the city of York, of a good family, though not of that country, my father being a foreigner of Bremen, who settled first at Hull. He got a good estate by merchandise, and leaving off his trade, lived afterwards at York, from whence he had married my mother, whose relations were named Robinson, a very good family in that country, and from whom I was called Robinson Kreutznaer; but, by the usual corruption of words in England, we are now called-nay we call ourselves and write our name-Crusoe; and so my companions always called me.I had two elder brothers, one of whom was lieutenant-colonel to an English regiment of foot in Flanders, formerly commanded by the famous Colonel Lockhart, and was killed at the battle near Dunkirk against the Spaniards. What became of my second brother I never knew, any more than my father or mother knew what became of me.Being the third son of the family and not bred to any trade, my head began to be filled very early with rambling thoughts. My father, who was very ancient, had given me a competent share of learning, as far as house-education and a country free school generally go, and designed me for the law; but I would be satisfied with nothing but going to sea; and my inclination to this led me so strongly against the will, nay, the commands of my father, and against all the entreaties and persuasions of my mother and other friends, that there seemed to be something fatal in that propensity of nature, tending directly to the life of misery which was to befall me.My father, a wise and grave man, gave me serious and excellent counsel against what he foresaw was my design. He called me one morning into his chamber, where he was confined by the gout, and expostulated very warmly with me upon this subject. He asked me what reasons, more than a mere wandering inclination, I had for leaving father's house and my native country, where I might be well introduced, and had a prospect of raising my fortune by application and industry, with a life of ease and pleasure. He told me it was men of desperate fortunes on one hand, or of aspiring, superior fortunes on the other, who went abroad upon adventures, to rise by enterprise, and make themselves famous in undertakings of a nature out of the common road; that these things were all either too far above me or too far below me; that mine was the middle state, or what might be called the upper station of low life, which he had found, by long experience, was the best state in the world, the most suited to human happiness, not exposed to the miseries and hardships, the labour and sufferings of the mechanic part of mankind, and not embarrassed with the pride, luxury, ambition, and envy of the upper part of mankind. He told me I might judge of the happiness of this state by this one thing-viz. that this was the state of life which all other people envied; that kings have frequently lamented the miserable consequence of being born to great things, and wished they had been placed in the middle of the two extremes, between the mean and the great; that the wise man gave his testimony to this, as the standard of felicity, when he prayed to have neither poverty nor riches.

A Journal of the Plague Year Daniel Defoe

release date: Dec 01, 2016
A Journal of the Plague Year Daniel Defoe
A Journal of the Plague Year is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published in March 1722. This novel is an account of one man's experiences of the year 1665, in which the Great Plague or the bubonic plague struck the city of London. The book is told somewhat chronologically, though without sections or chapter headings. Presented as an eyewitness account of the events at the time, it was written in the years just prior to the book's first publication in March 1722. Defoe was only five years old in 1665, and the book itself was published under the initials H. F. and is probably based on the journals of Defoe's uncle, Henry Foe. In the book, Defoe goes to great pains to achieve an effect of verisimilitude, identifying specific neighborhoods, streets, and even houses in which events took place. Additionally, it provides tables of casualty figures and discusses the credibility of various accounts and anecdotes received by the narrator. The novel is often compared to the actual, contemporary accounts of the plague in the diary of Samuel Pepys. Defoe's account, which appears to include much research, is far more systematic and detailed than Pepys's first-person account.

The King of Pirates
Following the success of Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe composed a further tale of high adventure at sea. The result was this lesser-known work, an inspired and hugely enjoyable “first-hand” account of pirate life. In response to an alleged letter accusing him of the worst possible deeds, Captain Avery pens a reply seeking to exonerate himself from all such charges. He sees fit to provide a full account of life as captain of a pirate ship. Yet far from being the archetypal, murderous villain, his letters reveal him simply to be a lovable rogue—albeit one with something of a penchant for fine jewels.
