Pain is a subjective distressing experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage with sensory, emotional, cognitive and social components. This work aims to develop automatic methods for quantifying pain intensity from physiological and behavioral metrics, and providing real-time clinically interpretable analgesic dosing recommendations personalized according to each patient'' evolving pain and physiological condition. Historically, pain in humans has been measured using subjective self-report scales to determine presence and severity. However, these are problematic metrics for both diagnostic and research purposes. For example, self-report is impossible to obtain in various clinical populations, such as unconscious patients or patients with cognitive impairments. Further, comparisons between people reporting their pain is difficult to do with confidence, as these metrics are highly subjective, depend on previous history with pain and other cognitive and behavioral factors, and can vary over time. Therefore, while current assessment of pain largely relies on the self-report of an individual, the development of an objective, automatic detection/measure of pain may be useful in many research and clinical applications. Such approaches, if successful may not only detect pain, but may provide for a more rational therapeutic intervention. Hence, the objective of this work was to evaluate the use of physiological and behavioral metrics as markers of pain, and to develop automatic methods for objectively quantifying pain. To do so, we focused on three sensing modalities: facial video, autonomic signals from wearable sensors, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy of the brain cortex. There is often great variability in how people perceive, experience, and physiologically and behaviorally express pain, hence stemming efforts to build a one-size-fits-all pain recognition system. To address this, we proposed novel state-of-the-art machine learning methods for the personalization of the inference process. This approach results in models tailored specifically for individuals that still account for the broader population data. Finally, in this work, we explored the use of reinforcement learning to aid decision making in the intensive care setting by providing personalized pain management interventions.

The Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region holds a comfortable leading place in terms of the share of renewables in the electricity generation matrix, mainly due to the share of hydropower generation, which accounts for 46% of total power generation in 2017. Despite the share of renewable in the generation mix decreased by 8.2% from 2000 to 2016, the generation output of renewables increased by 51%, in absolute terms, during the same period. This has been a consequence of the decrease of renewables costs and the result of many policies applied in the LAC region. In this monograph, we study incentive mechanisms for both grid-scale (large and medium scale generation) and DG (small scale generation installed at the main consumption unit) in LAC.

Energy efficiency is the best tool to improve sustainability and affordability of energy services. However, there are considerable challenges when it comes to identifying opportunities and measurement. This monograph provides a comprehensive understanding of the trends and progress made in terms of energy intensity in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) compared to other world regions and nationally by looking at the aggregate, industrial and household levels. Additionally, it discusses the limitations of using such indicator to measure energy efficiency in LAC. In order to complement perspectives resulting from this indicator, it investigates the counterpart challenge of promoting energy efficiency: creating incentives. To address this challenge, the present document proposes a conceptual framework through which to analyze energy efficiency policies and regulation across the region. This framework consists of four steps: Law and regulation, Types of incentives, Targets and Governance and Support. The analysis carried out leads to policy recommendations at both the national and regional levels.

Este estudio realiza un análisis comparativo de las metas de reducción de emisiones propuestas por los diferentes países de América Latina y el Caribe en sus NDC y sus planes de expansión de generación eléctrica. El documento demuestra que hay coherencia entre ambos instrumentos. No obstante, existen desafíos importantes de cara a alinear los objetivos ambientales y los del sector eléctrico: (1) en algunos países los resultados evidencian la necesidad del desarrollo de medidas de mitigación adicionales que conduzcan al cumplimiento de los objetivos; (2) en los países que no poseen planes de expansión, las NDC tienden a ser menos detallados y claros, lo que dificulta validar su factibilidad. En general, se manifiesta la necesidad de fortalecer las capacidades de planificación de los países y de implementar medidas de mitigación más medibles, puesto que todavía existen casos en la región donde los países no cuentan con un órgano institucional que esté a cargo de esta importante tarea o un marco regulatorio que apoye su ejecución.

One of the current major challenges in wind energy is to maximize energy production of wind farms. One approach in this effort is through control of wind turbine wake interactions, since undesirable wake interactions can introduce additional mechanical stresses on turbines, leading to early failures and reduce overall energy production of wind farms. To develop control strategies that can minimize wake interactions, it is essential to simulate wake behaviors accurately and quickly. In this work, a fast and accurate turbine wake model capable of modeling turbine wakes under yaw is presented. This model builds upon the work of existing wake models and is capable of producing results comparable to that of conventional full CFD simulations using a fraction of the computational cost. The accuracy and speed of the proposed model allows for the development of real-time turbine control strategies to maximize power output. The results of the proposed model are validated with previous numerical and experimental data found in the literature. Wind tunnel tests were also designed and conducted in order to validate the models'' ability to simulate overlapping wakes, a requirement for producing realistic results of a complete wind farm simulation.

In networked control systems (NCS) information or packets usually flow from a sensor or a set of sensors to a remotely located controller. Then the controller processes the received information and sends a series of control commands to the actuators through a communication network which could be either wireless or wired. For any type of communication network, time delays are an inherent problem and depending on the conditions of the network they can be constant, variable or even of random nature. Time-delays occurring from sensor to controller and from controller to actuators may cause important system performance degradation or even instability. This work proposes a novel strategy of using the predictive capabilities of artificial neural networks (NN), particularly the application of an adaptive NN, to minimize the effects of time delays in the feedback control loop of NCS. We adopt an adaptive time delay neural network (TDNN) to predict future time-delays based on a given history of delays that are particularly present on the network where the corresponding system belongs to. The adaptive nature of a TDNN allows the prediction of unexpected variations of time-delays which might not be present in the training set of a known history of delays. This is an important characteristic for real time applications. Using predicted time delays, different methodologies can be used to alleviate effects of such delays on NCS. Our focus here is on the development of an observer-based variable sampling period model, and this dissertation describes how this method can be used as an effective solution for this problem. Generally speaking, the predicted time-delay values are used for the discretization of a continuous-time linear time invariant system model transforming it into a discrete-time linear time variant system model. In this dissertation, the practical phenomenon of packet dropout is also addressed.
