Fragments of Fietas

release date: Sep 01, 2025
Fragments of Fietas
Between 1948 and 2016, David Goldblatt returned periodically to Fietas, a suburb west of Johannesburg?s city centre, to photograph the impact of punitive segregation and ethnic cleansing wrought by apartheid legislation on its residents and landscape. Moved by the life force of the predominantly Indian community?s families, shopkeepers, and small business owners, Goldblatt said attempted ?to grasp something of their life and what they had built.?The resulting photographs, collected and published here for the first time, form a vivid social document of Fietas before, during, and after its destruction under the Group Areas Act. Earlier images of storefronts and domestic interiors contrast poignantly with those of their demolition from the late 1970s onwards. Dignified portraits of traders in their stores capture their determined efforts to build a life for their families. Interviews with past and present Fietas residents close the book, recalling the testimonials of Goldblatt?s subjects in The Transported of Kwandebele and Ex-Offenders at the Scene of Crime.Exemplary of Goldblatt?s empathetic and observational documentary style, these photographs and oral histories establish a generous exchange between photographer and subject. Together these materials preserve narratives of Fietas as a racially diverse community that existed in defiance of apartheid. An accompanying essay by Professor Ashwin Desai places Fietas within the wider historical context of Indian South Africans and racist ideology before and after the advent of apartheid, completing a compelling reference to a little known community forever changed by the darkest point in South Africa?s history.

David Goldblatt: Fietas Fractured
This book presents photos by David Goldblatt taken between 1952 and 2016 of Fietas in Johannesburg, with an emphasis on his 1976-77 images of the suburb''s last Indian residents before they were forcibly removed under apartheid. Known affectionately by its inhabitants as Fietas, though officially called Pageview, this was one of the city''s few "non-racial" suburbs, where Malay, African, Chinese, Indian and a few white people lived. Composed of narrow streets and small houses of two rooms and a kitchen for up to 15 people, here different races and religions formed a strong, safe community where children played in the streets. There were two mosques, Hindu, Tamil and Muslim schools, cricket, soccer and bridge clubs, and 170 shops--customers came from all over the Witwatersrand. In 1948 the National Party came to power and made the clearance of all "non-white" inhabitants of Pageview an immediate objective. Some 5,000 Africans and other people of color were evicted or "persuaded" to leave by the promise of better townships, while under the Group Areas Act the Indians were to move to Lenasia, an apartheid creation 35 kilometers from the city. For 20 years the remaining Indians fought against removal, principally in the courts, but in 1977 police and their dogs finally forced them out, except for a few. Almost all buildings were destroyed and in their place new houses for lower-income whites built. Today these are occupied by a mix of people from Africa, Europe and Asia; no sense of community remains except that of the homeless sheltering in the spaces left by demolition.

Teori-Teori Sosial Kontemporer Paling Berpengaruh

release date: Feb 26, 2019
Teori-Teori Sosial Kontemporer Paling Berpengaruh

The Ball Is Round kennt."" Aesthetics
Aesthetics: A Reader in Philosophy of the Arts, fourth edition, contains a selection of ninety-six readings organized by individual art forms as well as a final section of readings in philosophical aesthetics that cover multiple art forms. Sections include topics that are familiar to students such as painting, photography and movies, architecture, music, literature, and performance, as well as contemporary subjects such as mass art, popular arts, the aesthetics of the everyday, and the natural environment. Essays are drawn from both the analytic and continental traditions, and multiple others that bridge this divide between these traditions. Throughout, readings are brief, accessible for undergraduates, and conceptually focused, allowing instructors many different syllabi possibilities using only this single volume. Key Additions to the Fourth Edition The fourth edition is expanded to include a total of ninety-six essays with nineteen new essays (nine of them written exclusively for this volume), updated organization into new sections, revised introductions to each section, an increased emphasis on contemporary topics, such as stand-up comedy, the architecture of museums, interactivity and video games, the ethics of sexiness, trans/gendered beauty, the aesthetics of junkyards and street art, pornography, and the inclusion of more diverse philosophical voices. Nevertheless, this edition does not neglect classic writers in the traditional aesthetics: Plato, Aristotle, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Heidegger, Collingwood, Bell, and writers of similar status in aesthetics. The philosophers writing new chapters exclusively for this fourth edition are: • Sondra Bacharach on street art • Aili Bresnahan on appreciating dance • Hina Jamelle on digital architecture • Jason Leddington on magic • Sheila Lintott on stand-up comedy • Yuriko Saito on everyday aesthetics • Larry Shiner on art spectacle museums in the twenty-first century • Peg Brand Weiser on how beauty matters • Edward Winters on the feeling of being at home in vernacular architecture, as in such urban places as bars.

The Game of Our Lives

release date: Oct 30, 2014
The Game of Our Lives
WINNER of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award 2015 In the last two decades football in Britain has made the transition from a peripheral dying sport to the very centre of our popular culture, from an economic basket-case to a booming entertainment industry. What does it mean when football becomes so central to our private and political lives? Has it enriched us or impoverished us? In this sparkling book David Goldblatt argues that no social phenomenon tracks the momentous economic, social and political changes of the post-Thatcherite era in a more illuminating manner than football, and no cultural practice sheds more light on the aspirations and attitudes of our long boom and now calamitous bust. A must-read for the thinking football fan, The Game of Our Lives will appeal to readers of Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby and Inverting the Pyramid by Jonathan Wilson. It will also be relished by readers of British social history such as Austerity Britain by David Kynaston. ''Brilliantly incisive. Goldblatt is not merely the best football historian writing today, he is possibly the best there has ever been. Goldblatt''s book could hardly be more impressive'' Sunday Times

Futebol Nation

release date: May 13, 2014
Futebol Nation
No nation is as closely identified with the game of soccer as Brazil. For over a century, Brazil’s people, politicians, and poets have found in soccer the finest expression of the nation’s collective potential. Since the team’s dazzling performance in 1938 at the World Cup in France, Brazilian soccer has been revered as an otherworldly blend of the effective and the aesthetic. Futebol Nation is an extraordinary chronicle of a nation that has won the World Cup five times and produced players of miraculous skill, such as Pelé, Garrincha, Rivaldo, Zico, Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho. It shows why the phrase O Jogo Bonito—the Beautiful Game—has justly entered the global lexicon. Yet there is another side to Brazil and its game, one that reflects the harsh sociological realities of the “futebol nation.” David Goldblatt explores the grinding poverty that creates a vast pool of hungry players, Brazil’s corrupt institutions exemplified by its soccer authorities, and the pervasive violence that has seeped onto the field and into the stands. Futebol Nation illuminates both Brazilian soccer and Brazil itself; its brilliance, its magic, its style, and the fabulous myths that have been constructed around it; as well as its tragedies, its miseries, and its economic and political injustices. It is the story of Brazil told through its chosen national game.

Art and Ventriloquism

release date: Feb 04, 2014
Art and Ventriloquism
This exciting collection of David Goldblatt''s essays, available for the first time in one volume, uses the metaphor of ventriloquism to help understand a variety of art world phenomena. It examines how the vocal vacillation between ventriloquist and dummy works within the roles of artist, artwork and audience as a conveyance to the audience of the performer''s intentions, emotions and beliefs through a created performative persona. Considering key works, including those of Nietzsche, Foucault, Socrates, Derrida, Cavell and Wittgenstein, Goldblatt examines how the authors use the framework of ventriloquism to construct and negate issues in art and architecture. He ponders ''self-plagiarism''; why the classic philosopher cannot speak for himself, but must voice his thoughts through fictional characters or inanimate objects and works. With a close analysis of two ventriloquist paintings by Jasper Johns and Paul Klee, a critical commentary by Garry L. Hagberg, and preface by series editor Saul Ostrow, Goldblatt''s thoroughly fascinating book will be an invaluable asset to students of cultural studies, art, and philosophy.

Particulars

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Particulars
Following a series of portraits of his compatriots made at the beginning of the 1970s, photographer David Goldblatt, for a very short and intense period of time, naturally turned to focusing on peoples'' particulars and individual body languages "as affirmations or embodiments of their selves." Goldblatt''s affinity was no accident: Working at his father''s men''s outfitting store in the 1950s, his awareness of posture, gesture and proportion-technical as it was-formed early and would accompany him throughout his life. In this series we see hands resting on laps, crossed legs, the curved backs of sleepers on a lawn at midday, their fingers and feet relaxed, pausing from their usual occupations. This deeply contemplative work is framed by Ingrid de Kok''s poetry. The photographs in Particulars were taken beginning in 1975, and the first edition of the book was published by Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg, in 2003. Goldblatt has revised Particulars for this new Steidl edition.

David Goldblatt, TJ

Intersections Intersected
For more than 50 years Goldblatt has produced comprehensive series of photographs dealing with poignant issues of life in South Africa. ''Intersections Intersected'' features approximately 30 pairs of images, each set composed of one black and white and one colour image, taken before and after 1994. The series of photographs, many presented here for the first time, were taken in the same place that was visited during the Apartheid regime and then later, after its fall. The choice of pairs was made by the artist who has also contributed extended documentary captions relating to each one of the images. In addition, the publication is also accompanied by essays from Ivor Platt and Ulrich Loock.

The Ball is Round

release date: Aug 30, 2007
The Ball is Round
The definitive book about football. There may be no cultural practice more global than soccer. Rites of birth and marriage are infinitely diverse, but the rules of football are universal. No world religion can match its geographical scope. The single greatest simultaneous human collective experience is the World Cup final. In this extraordinary tour de force, David Goldblatt tells the full story of football''s rise from chaotic folk ritual to the world''s most popular sport-now poised to fully establish itself in the USA. Already celebrated internationally, The Ball Is Round illuminates football''s role in the political and social histories of modern societies, but never loses sight of the beauty, joy, and excitement of the game itself.

Teoria social e ambiente

release date: Jan 01, 1998
Teoria social e ambiente

Lifetimes Under Apartheid

Lifetimes Under Apartheid
This work is another contribution to the growing pictorial record of apartheid in South Africa, and like some earlier series of black-and-white photographs it is haunted with pathos and irony. Like the pictures from Peter Magubane''s Magubane''s South Africa (LJ 5/15/78), Goldblatt''s images span 35 years and qualify as works of art in their own right.

On the Mines

On the Mines
And "Goldblatt grew up in the South African town of Randfontein, which was shaped by the social culture and financial success of the gold mines surrounding it. When these mines started to fail in the mid-sixties Goldblatt began taking photos of them, which form the basis of On the Mines. The book features an essay on the human and political dimensions of mining in South Africa by Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer, whose writing has long influenced Goldblatt."
