Barack Before Obama

release date: Dec 01, 2020
Barack Before Obama
A People Pick of the Week One of USA Today’s 5 Books Not to Miss One of Forbes’ 5 Books to Read in December A personal, intimate photographic celebration of President Barack Obama, featuring over 200 rare and never-before seen images from the years prior to his presidency, from photographer, friend, and former aide David Katz In 2004, David Katz worked alongside then Senate-hopeful Barack Obama as a photographer and personal aide. He spent approximately six days a week alongside the future president as Obama campaigned across downstate Illinois, and the two developed a close, professional, and personal relationship. What began as a long-shot Senate run culminated with the election of America’s first African American president in 2008, which Katz also photographed. During this time, David was never without his camera, capturing quotidian scenes from the life of a man who would soon become known the world over: a dad playing with his small daughters; a young unknown politician walking the streets of New York by himself with no one noticing; a devoted husband lovingly making faces at his wife in an elevator. In 2004, after seeing the unique and touching photographs David had amassed, Annie Leibovitz gave him some advice: “Don’t release these photos of Obama for at least fifteen years. They need time to age.” Now, fifteen years later, Barack Before Obama is the treasury of these photographs. Pulled from an archive of more than ninety thousand images, every photograph in this volume is like nothing that has been seen before: the ease in which David captures the spirit and essence of one of our most beloved first families is unparalleled, and it is in this affectionate familiarity that his photographs sing. Warm, engaging captions tell the stories behind the photos—the surprise meeting with Nelson Mandela, the back room conversation before the rally, the emotion after sending one of the Obamas’ daughters off to school—bringing readers closer than ever to the spirit and motivation behind the extraordinary man who became our forty-fourth president. Barack Before Obama is a unique collection of images illustrating the making of an American icon. A moving document of an historic moment, it’s the perfect gift for all those who want to remember it.

No one has hitherto brought together within the covers of a single volume the interesting and useful pictures which relate to various phases of psychology. Consequently, this atlas, which represents the first attempt to organize a collection of graphic material, should meet a genuine need. The World of Touch

release date: May 13, 2013
The World of Touch
For the first time, David Katz''s classic monograph The World of Touch has been translated into English. Regarded as one of the premiere experimental psychologists, Katz vigorously opposed the atomism and "tachistoscopic" mentality typical of the sensory psychology of his day. In The World of Touch, Katz sought to dispel the invidious distinction between the supposedly higher (e.g., vision, audition) and lower (e.g., touch) senses. To help touch regain its original prominence in the field, Katz demonstrated, through very simple, yet creative experiments, how fascinating the abilities of touch are, and how valuable the tactual stimulus can be in specifying objects, surfaces, substances, and events. In addition, Katz emphasized the importance of higher-order invariants in the perception of objects, and the holistic quality of perception in time as well as space.

Soul Mazal

release date: Feb 16, 2016
Soul Mazal
Little is spoken of, and hardly remembered, concerning Shem, son of Noah. Yet is from him, in the Academy of Shem and Ever, that "Kabbalah Kadmonim" − Wisdoms of the Ancients, from Adam, Seth, and Enoch − passed down to the well-known patriarchs of the Jewish People. We ask what those wisdoms were...and we find them echoing through the ages, from Creation to the End of Days, still alive and vital for all generations of souls, for...Shem was a great tzadik, who entered Gan Eden (while still on the Ark) and ate from the Tree of Life...so that he never tasted death. And from his descendants would come the stump of Jesse − the Mashiach, who would ultimately "swallow death forever."

Round Trip

release date: Apr 30, 2013
Round Trip
TransGalactic Travel is considering pulling the plug on planet Earth as a vacation destination for its clients. It''s just too much trouble. But two of its travel agents make a last ditch visit to the planet to observe and report on the difficulties their travelers are having while inhabiting Earthly bodies. A hippie goddess, a billionaire hedge fund owner, and their lovers never realize that the fate of the planet depends on the memos these agents send about them to the home office. What Readers Are Saying: "Like Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy only with a little more sex and a lot more contemporary storyline!" "One of the best sci fi novels I''ve read in a long time!" "Round Trip is an amazing science fiction adventure with a lot of fun. Definitely makes you think!" Excerpt: "One of our more popular destinations in recent times has been the small planet Terra. In the seventh arm of the Gobol there is a typical spiral galaxy. Tucked away in one of its off-center whorls lies this gem of a spheroid, the third from its yellow star. We highly recommend it for lovers of beauty and diversity of life forms. Out of a long-ago scatter seeding, one took root and evolved into tens of millions of species, all sharing the same cellular foundation. They fall into two principal types, stationary forms which directly consume solar radiation (the so-called plants) and mobile forms (animals) that ingest either the plants or each other. Within these two categories are life-forms of fantastic beauty and variety. The plants are frequently decorated with colorful tufts of petals. These occur in an unimaginable variety of forms, colors, and, most wonderfully, scents of intoxicating delightfulness. Each and every one of the animals, ranging from the tiny to the sizeable, is constructed with jewel-like precision in each of its parts. Some fly through the atmosphere in perfect grace, on iridescent wings of every color of the spectrum. Others are specialized to swim, solitary or in groups numbering in the thousands, through the transparent liquid which covers about two thirds of the world''s surface. This liquid, consisting solely of hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio of two to one, is the essential nutrient of each of the planet''s life forms. It is distributed over the world''s surface by an elegant mechanism of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. This results in myriad delightful features of flowing liquid, here collecting in pools and there cascading over rocks. This essential liquid is itself highly entertaining, and capable of giving rise to such diverting phenomena as "rainbows" (see image) and "snow." Do not fail to appreciate the perfection and marvelous variety of the tiny crystalline flakes of which this snow is composed. Your vehicle for your brief visit to this world, through our special arrangement with the local galactic council, will be the body of one of the species of animals! Yes, you will leap with joy across the surface of the planet, mingling with animals of your own and other species. You will delight in the exploration of natural features of truly inspired beauty, such as "mountains," "canyons," and "forests." (see images.) The species provided for our incarnation is, frankly, not one of the more agile or elegant in its physical form, but has been chosen for its unrivaled sensory abilities. Five separate input channels allow you to experience with tremendous immediacy and clarity each of the countless marvels of this planet. By way of example, "hearing" allows you to perceive the fantastic array of subtle vibrations of the atmosphere by which both your host species and others actually communicate with one another. Sometimes these vibrations are used to convey essential information, and at other times, they are generated and appreciated by this species purely for delightful amusement."
