Ethics and the Environmental Health Profession

release date: Sep 17, 2025
Ethics and the Environmental Health Profession
Providing an exploration of the discussion on how a stronger ethical basis for the work of environmental health practitioners (EHPs) can contribute to improved public health, because EHPs/environmental health officers (EHOs) come into daily contact with members of the public to address threats to their health and wellbeing. This book examines what is meant by professional ethics and the role of professional bodies in ensuring members of the profession act ethically. They should be expected to act as guardians of the public interest, without fear or favour. Ethics is an integral part of public health decision-making and needs to be incorporated into public and environmental health policy development and decision-making. This work, while seeking to stimulate debate within the environmental health profession, will examine what this means for EHPs. Ethics and the Environmental Health Profession: The Importance of Being Ethical explores the process of ethical decision-making in the environmental health profession and asks the question of whom EHPs have an ethical duty towards in their work. It looks at a variety of ethical issues which arise for EHPs working in local government, as consultants or for commercial companies. This book is useful for EHPs globally, other local government officers, educational establishments where environmental and public health courses are run globally, elected members of local authorities, and policymakers at national and local government levels.

The Tale of the Axe

release date: Sep 06, 2016
The Tale of the Axe
How the New Stone Age shaped our world Approximately 12,000 years ago, early humans in western Asia and Europe who had been itinerant foragers, subsisting on what food they could find, slowly began settling in one place. They farmed and domesticated animals, created new tools, built monuments, and began preserving and storing food. What brought about this shift? What difference did it make to the overall population? And what effects did this Neolithic Revolution have on generations to come? The Tale of the Axe explores the New Stone Age—named for the new types of stone tools that appeared at that time, specifically the ground stone axe—taking Britain as its focus. David Miles takes the reader on a journey through Neolithic Britain by way of its ancestors, geographical neighbors, and the species from which humans emerged before turning an eye to the future and those aspects of the Neolithic Revolution that live on today: farming, built communities, modern man, and much more.

Sneeze

release date: Apr 28, 2026
Sneeze
A tickle in the back of your throat? A cough that won’t let you sleep? A stuffy nose and a constant need to sneeze? When it comes to understanding the common cold, we have all had plenty of first-hand experience. We are all too familiar with the symptoms of the cold virus, having caught and fought one every few months on average. At this point, the cold is seen as an inevitable inconvenience, rather than an illness that should be wiped out. Dr David Miles, a world-leading immunologist, has amassed over a century of research on the common cold, starting from the foundational discovery that colds are caused by viruses, up to developments made during the pandemic. In Sneeze, Dr Miles looks at what exactly colds are and where they come from, to reveal practical steps we can take to avoid catching them, fighting them and, perhaps most ambitiously, the steps that we as a society can take to make our environment less conducive to spreading them. Comprehensive and richly detailed, Sneeze is the story of the common cold, and why it doesn''t need to be as common as we have come to imagine.

The Doa Who Made It!

The Doa Who Made It!
It was a warm, sunny, Tuesday afternoon. I was waiting at the red light at a busy interchange when another motorcycle pulled up next to me, in the same lane, also now waiting to go home, or to a friends house, or maybe shopping. The very next thing he did was watch me fly like a circus aerial act, bouncing off car roof tops, and sailing all the way across the huge intersection. With no prior intention, I was on my way to meet my maker and face up to the life that I had been living until thenall initiated by a drunk in an old, four-door sedan who had no plans on even slowing down. Resuscitated over and over on the asphalt, I was eventually rushed to the hospital, where my wife was repeatedly told that I would not be alive much longer. Not being a believer of that kind of talk, she took peace in her heart that I would survive to be with her and our two little boys. Now, having been comatose for two weeks, I awoke frightened and was told that I had little hope of much of a recovery. I was then confronted with Jesus himself, right there in that hospital room. What He asked me over and over at that point clarified my beliefs and gave me the confidence to continue on. I call that encounter a pure miracle and thank God that I was The DOA Who Made It!
