This D/P has been written for the purpose of alerting the wider church to a phenomenon that I call External Coercive Communication (ECC). It comes suddenly, may last for years or be gone after one instance after damaging a parish and then is forgotten, leaving no attempted strategy that might be helpful to another congregation. A website was created to provide an opportunity for dissemination of case studies, strategies for resistance, and a network for churches who have an interest in resisting ECC. Each instance of ECC is like the tip of an iceberg. What lies underneath is a long history of human attempts at domination. Walter Wink traces the domination system to about 3000 BCE. I trace it to the story in Genesis 3, in which humankind called Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree. When they saw that they were naked they decided that their nakedness was evil, even though God had said that everything that had been made was good. Humankind wants to decide what is good and evil and usurps God's right to make that decision. Historically, Hitler and Mao demonstrate methods for dominating an entire nation-propaganda and reeducation combined with threat, guilt, and intimidation through social pressure. Ideally, democracy is meant to invite the people to make their own decisions, for good or ill. Socially and psychologically, Silvan Tomkins shows us how our experiences accumulate to form our ideologies and faith values. Because these experiences can be positive or negative, Tomkins encourages us to be in environments that will maximize our positive experiences and minimize our negative ones. He points to shame as a common tool for training a younger generation. Shame is a tool of domination. George Lakoff describes two models of family. The first is the Strict Father model; the second is the Nurturant Parent model. In the Strict Father model, the head of the house is expected to teach the others what is right and wrong and thus dominates. The Nurturant Parent model is one in which teaching is shared and the emphasis is on sensitivity to the community and the needs of others. The theology of Paul, as understood by Augustine and Luther, shows that the spirit of judgement contradicts the reality that all human beings are sinful and that God alone can judge us. Dominion belongs to the Lord, not to human beings. It is God that decides what is good and evil. ECC is a continuation of our human rebellion against God's dominion. Both those who create ECC and the congregation that is its target need to treat the other with grace, just as God has treated with grace in Jesus Christ. When the website is complete, it is my hope that churches will be safer and will see these moments as opportunities to walk with Christ on a path toward stronger unity and deeper faith.

He and his wife Anna Maria had 5 children. Descendents settled in Wythe County, Virginia and Knox County, Indiana. Allied families include Buck, Copenhaver, Creger, Dutton, Fox, Horn, Johnson, Phillippe, Sechrest, Vaught and Wampler.
