He married Maria Marti who was born around 1650 and they had 1 child, Johannes Stephan Steffey, who was born in 1671 in Bern, Switzerland and died in 1729. He and his wife Ellsi Graf had 8 children, two of whom emigrated to the United States. Johann Ulrich Stephan arrived in Pennsylvania in 1727 and eventually settled in Lancaster County. He and his wife Anna Maria had 5 children. Descendents settled in Wythe County, Virginia and Knox County, Indiana. This D/P has been written for the purpose of alerting the wider church to a phenomenon that I call External Coercive Communication (ECC). It comes suddenly, may last for years or be gone after one instance after damaging a parish and then is forgotten, leaving no attempted strategy that might be helpful to another congregation. A website was created to provide an opportunity for dissemination of case studies, strategies for resistance, and a network for churches who have an interest in resisting ECC. Each instance of ECC is like the tip of an iceberg. What lies underneath is a long history of human attempts at domination. Walter Wink traces the domination system to about 3000 BCE. I trace it to the story in Genesis 3, in which humankind called Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree. When they saw that they were naked they decided that their nakedness was evil, even though God had said that everything that had been made was good. Humankind wants to decide what is good and evil and usurps God''s right to make that decision. Historically, Hitler and Mao demonstrate methods for dominating an entire nation-propaganda and reeducation combined with threat, guilt, and intimidation through social pressure. Ideally, democracy is meant to invite the people to make their own decisions, for good or ill. Socially and psychologically, Silvan Tomkins shows us how our experiences accumulate to form our ideologies and faith values. Because these experiences can be positive or negative, Tomkins encourages us to be in environments that will maximize our positive experiences and minimize our negative ones. He points to shame as a common tool for training a younger generation. Shame is a tool of domination. George Lakoff describes two models of family.
