Gaudy Night
“Gaudy Night stands out even among Miss Sayers’s novels. And Miss Sayers has long stood in a class by herself.”—Times Literary Supplement (London) Dorothy L. Sayers’s Gaudy Night takes mystery writer Harriet Vane and her paramour and dashing sleuth, Lord Peter Wimsey to Oxford University, Harriet’s alma mater, for a reunion, only to find themselves the targets of a nightmare of harassment and mysterious, murderous threats. Now available as a limited Olive Edition from Harper Perennial. When Harriet Vane attends her Oxford reunion, known as the Gaudy, the prim academic setting is haunted by a rash of bizarre pranks: scrawled obscenities, burnt effigies, and poison-pen letters, including one that says, "Ask your boyfriend with the title if he likes arsenic in his soup." Some of the notes threaten murder; all are perfectly ghastly; yet in spite of their scurrilous nature, all are perfectly worded. And Harriet finds herself ensnared in a nightmare of romance and terror, with only the tiniest shreds of clues to challenge her powers of detection, and those of her paramour, Lord Peter Wimsey.

The Just Vengeance

release date: Jul 20, 2011
The Just Vengeance
In this play, Dorothy L. Sayers addressed the crimes and problems of human life, especially those of the victors in war, in an entirely novel way, by precipitating an airman in the very moment of his death back into the company of citizens of the "City," in this case, Lichfield. The citizens range from Adam and Eve (Adam himself the inventor of the axe which kills Abel) together with other biblical characters in the history of redemption brought to new life as members of the City (e.g., Judas is a common informer). Others bear burdens of shame, toil, fear, poverty, and ingratitude. Former inhabitants (e.g., George Fox, Dr. Johnson) help the airman see that no more than they can he shift the burden of guilt and grief that they all share. There is but one remedy, to join the "Persona Dei" carrying his cross, finding indeed that he bears their burdens for them. The "Persona Dei" is finally seen in resurrection and glory.

The Zeal of thy House

release date: Jul 18, 2011
The Zeal of thy House
Dorothy L. Sayers took her inspiration from a monk''s account of the fire of 1174, and the subsequent rebuilding of Canterbury Cathedral Quire. She portrays William of Sens, the chosen architect, as eaten away by pride in his splendid work, unable to give glory to God for his achievement. Enacted in the presence of a group of graciously influential archangels, the play reveals the carelessness of some of the monks, resulting in the terrifying fall that cripples William. His agony brings him to repentance and gratitude before God, and finally to the renunciation of his role, leaving the completion of the rebuilding to others. This edition also comes with an English translation of the Latin texts in the play.

The Church of Women

release date: May 11, 2005
The Church of Women
In Africa, why have so many more women converted to Christianity than men? What explains the appeal of Christianity to women? What does religious conversion mean for the negotiation of gender and ethnic identity? What role does religious conversion play as a tool for empowering women? In The Church of Women, Dorothy L. Hodgson looks at how gender has shaped the encounter between missionary priests and Maasai men and women in Tanzania. Building on her extensive experience with Maasai and the Spiritan missionaries, Hodgson explores how gendered change among Maasai has shaped women''s notions of religious faith, religious practice, and spiritual power. Hodgson explores the appeal of Catholicism among women in East Africa, the enmeshing of Catholic practice with Maasai spirituality, and the meaning of conversion to new Christians. This rich, engaging, and original book challenges notions about religious encounter and the role of ethnic identity, female authority, and power among Maasai.

Mind of the Maker

release date: Jan 17, 2005
Mind of the Maker
Dorothy L Sayers'' great lay contemporaries in the Church of England were T. S. Eliot, C.S. Lewis and Charles Williams, but none of them wrote a book quite like The Mind of the Maker. In this crisp, elegant exercise in theology, Sayers illuminates the doctrine of the Trinity by relating it to the process of writing fiction, a process about which she could speak with complete authority. She illustrates her thesis with many examples drawn from her own books, and even illuminates the Christian heresies by analysing certain failures of creation which regularly occur in literature. This marvellous classic describes the creative process in terms of the arts and shows that literature can cast light on theology and vice versa.

By situating the Maasai in the political, economic, and social context of Tanzania and world events, Dorothy L. Hodgson shows how outside forces, and views of development in particular, have influenced Maasai lifeways, especially gender relations. Five profiles of Maasai men and women interspersed within the text bring Maasai voices to life and show that they were never passive witnesses to their own history."--BOOK JACKET.

Expressionism in Twentieth-century Music

release date: Jan 01, 1993
Expressionism in Twentieth-century Music
"Idealism, rebellion against complacency, and an urgent need for new linguistic power with which to transcend their sense of spiritual crisis were characteristics common to expressionist painters, poets, and dramatists as well as to composers. Indeed, these individuals were frequently active in several fields. Expressionism in Twentieth-Century Music explores expressionism in music in relation to the same movement in other creative arts." "This humanist approach to music written in the first quarter of the twentieth century considers the biographical, cultural, and societal context in which these compositions were conceived and explores the psychological imperatives at the root of individual composers'' innovations. John C. Crawford and Dorothy L. Crawford point out influential expressionist tendencies in Wagner, Richard Strauss, Mahler, Scriabin, and Mussorgsky, all of whom prepared the ground as forerunners to musical expressionism. The authors examine strongly expressionist traits in the works not only of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern but also of Bartok, Stravinsky, Ives, and a "second generation" - Hindemith, Krenek, and Weill; and they find a legacy of expressionism in such composers as Ruggles and Shostakovich and in other iconoclasts still living." "In its interdisciplinary approach, the book is generously provided with musical analyses and excerpts from major expressionist compositions, examples of contemporaneous poetry (some of it written by the composers themselves), and reproductions of striking art works by Kandinsky, Marc, Kokoschka, Klimt, and Nolde, among others. A chapter is devoted to synthesis of the arts, which was uniquely important to expressionist composers." "Expressionism in Twentieth-Century Music demonstrates the interdependence of the arts in the twentieth century and makes a challenging body of music more accessible and meaningful to students, composers, and musicologists."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
