La huella que la estética romántica deja en todo el subsiguiente género de horror se vuelve fácilmente identificable en los relatos de Kwaidan, de Lafcadio Hearn, y también en muchas de las más alucinadas páginas de Guy de Maupassant, uno de cuyos ejemplos es su clásico El horlá.
