Child Development
In the Third Edition of the topically organized Child Development: An Active Learning Approach, authors Laura E. Levine and Joyce A. Munsch invite students to take an active journey toward understanding the latest findings from the field of child development. Using robust pedagogical tools built into the chapter narratives, students are challenged to confront myths and misconceptions, participate in real-world activities with children and independently, and utilize video resources and research tools to pursue knowledge and develop critical thinking skills on their own. This new edition covers the latest findings on developmental neuroscience, positive youth development, the role of fathers, and more, with topics of diversity and culture integrated throughout. More than a textbook, this one-of-a-kind resource will continue to serve students as they go on to graduate studies, to work with children and adolescents professionally, and to care for children of their own.

In Trouble

release date: Aug 01, 2014
In Trouble
Jamie and Elaine have been best friends forever, and now they''re finally juniors in high school. Elaine has a steady boyfriend, and Jamie could have one?if she''d just open her eyes and see Paul. But Jamie has a bigger problem to worry about. Then Elaine gets "in trouble"?something they thought only happened to "other" girls. Are there any good choices for a girl in trouble? In Trouble is a novel born of author Ellen Levine''s interviews with women who came of age in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including those who knew what it was like to be a teen facing a horrible choice. In the decades before Roe v. Wade, a young woman "in trouble" had very few options?and all of them meant shame, isolation, and maybe much worse. Jamie and Elaine''s stories are just two among the thousands of stories of teenagers facing unplanned pregnancies.

Seababy

release date: Mar 13, 2012
Seababy
After a baby otter is separated from his mother during a storm, he washes up on shore alone and exhausted. A human rescues him and takes him to an aquarium where he''s taught how to survive in the wild—lessons his own mother would have taught if they hadn''t been separated. Seababy learns important tasks like diving, swimming, and eating, and before long he is well prepared to return home to the sea. Based on an actual program run by Monterey Bay Aquarium, Ellen Levine''s research with the scientists working with the baby otters lends this heartfelt tale authenticity, and Jon Van Zyle''s signature style captures the cute factor of these adorable babies, making this book a must have for animal lovers and science fans alike.

An Examination of Teachers' Participation in Teacher Leadership in a Rural District in Georgia

release date: Jan 01, 2007
An Examination of Teachers' Participation in Teacher Leadership in a Rural District in Georgia
Author''s abstract: Teacher leadership is an integral part of school improvement and an essential component of distributed leadership. The purpose of the study was to understand teacher leadership in a rural school district by analyzing teachers behaviors mapped to the dimensions of Snell and Swansons framework of teacher leadership: empowerment; expertise; reflection; and collaboration. The study sought to discover if there was a difference in teachers participation in teacher leadership in the three school levels of elementary, middle and high school. The study also examined demographic characteristics such as years of experience, educational degrees, and training in teacher preparation programs and their relationship to teacher leadership. Finally, the study examined the concept of courage as a component of teacher leadership. This study focused on a rural school district in Southeast Georgia. The researcher used a quantitative design for the descriptive study of teacher leadership. The researcher-developed instrument was the Teacher Leadership Participation Survey (TLPS) that utilized specific tasks and activities that directly related to the four dimensions of teacher leadership. The survey also included demographic questions that pertained to years of experience in education, highest degree obtained, and training in teacher leadership in teacher preparation programs. 2 The researcher found that teachers in small rural school districts are participating in teacher leadership, but elementary and middle school teachers were more likely to participate in teacher leadership and on a more consistent basis than high school teachers. The study also concluded that training in teacher leadership in teacher preparation programs had a significant impact on participation in teacher leadership. Finally, the component of courage was examined and found to be very consistent with the four dimensions of teacher leadership in relation to frequency of participation. Recommendations for further research included differences between elementary, middle, and high school, importance of teacher preparation programs and continuing education programs, and the importance of courage in the construct of teacher leadership. The concept of teacher leadership is relatively new and continues to evolve, but examination of the practices of teacher leadership may provide vast insight into successful initiatives within the school improvement process.
