This thesis analyzes three works by Willa Cather: "Paul's Case," O Pioneers!, and My Ántonia. I focus my discussion on Paul, Alexandra, and Ántonia. I examine the relationships between non-conforming identities, sexuality, loneliness and isolation, and nature. I argue that Cather positions the prairie as the hero of her novels, and she shows the powerful effect that nature has on ameliorating feelings of loneliness. Specifically, the prairie provides Alexandra and Ántonia enchanting experiences grounded in reality. I contrast this with her depiction of the debauchery and materialism of cities. Cather's love for the prairie shows her unique future-oriented perspective.
