Simulation Study on the Design Variations of the MEMS-based Ultrasonic Silicon Nozzle
MEMS based silicon ultrasonic nozzle utilizes piezoelectric transducer technique to generate Faraday wave mechanism on a longitudinal vibrator to produce micron sized monodisperse droplets that is beneficial in the drug delivery of lung diseases. While commercial devices provide a means for drug delivery, the non-uniform droplet distribution results in excessive drug usages that are usually expensive. Thus, the ultrasonic silicon nozzle serves as a novel solution to reduce the drug usage in addition to its low driving power and high delivery flow rate. Using the Finite Element Method through commercial software, ANSYS, the optimized shape of the device is being studied here. In order to do so, fundamental theories from mechanical vibration to damping theories are discussed. Various alternations and verificationsare performed in simulation in attempt to realize the optimized designing dimensions. To better match the simulation and experimental results, stress, strain, damping factor and material property were researched. To account for the narrow operating bandwidth of the nozzle, silicon thickness and tip enlargements on various Fourier Horns are simulated to gain a better insight in the generation of monodisperse droplets from multiple Fourier horns silicon ultrasonic nozzle.
