With a population around 6,000 people in 1907, Kenora is -- and always will be -- the smallest town to produce a Stanley Cup champion. The town''s team -- the Thistles -- were huge talents! Like the Edmonton Oilers of the 1980s, the Kenora Thistles of the 1900s played an up-tempo, offensive game that delighted most fans but put off some traditionalists. The names Tommy Phillips, Si Griffis, Tom Hooper, and Billy McGimisie were as well known to hockey fans in their day as Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, and Jari Kurri would be in theirs. Phillips, Griffis, Hooper, and McGimsie were the core of the Kenora Thistles. They all grew up together in the tiny town on the Lake of the Woods, and with the addition of another future Hall of Famer (hockey legend Art Ross), the team''s third try for the Stanley Cup in 1907 would be the charm. Hockey was already a national passion in Canada, and the game was in the early stages of its transition from amateur pastime to professional business ... even if there were already complaints that salaries were too much to high.
