The Communist Manifesto

release date: Jan 01, 1992
The Communist Manifesto
One of the most important and influential political theories ever formulated, The Communist Manifesto is a revolutionary summons to the working class-an incisive account of a new theory of communism that would be brought about by a proletarian revolution. Arguing that increasing exploitation of industrial workers will eventually lead to a rebellion in which capitalism will be overthrown, Marx and Engels propose a vision of a society without classes, private property, or a state. The theoretical basis of political systems in Russia, China, Cuba, and Eastern Europe, The Communist Manifesto continues to influence and provoke debate on capitalism and class.

The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State

release date: Nov 19, 2019
The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State
In "The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State," Friedrich Engels presents a groundbreaking analysis of the interplay between family structures, economic systems, and societal hierarchies. Blending rigorous socio-economic critique with historical materialism, Engels deconstructs conventional notions of the family by tracing its evolution from primitive communal societies to the patriarchal systems of modernity. His examination unveils the profound impact of private property on social relations, positing that the emergence of ownership fundamentally altered familial dynamics and, consequently, the formation of the state. Engels employs a dialectical method, crafting a narrative that is both accessible and deeply theoretical, situating his ideas within the revolutionary context of 19th-century Europe. Engels, a staunch collaborator of Karl Marx, draws upon both personal observations and extensive historical research in constructing this seminal work. His background as a member of the industrial bourgeoisie and his engagement with radical political movements provided a unique lens through which he interrogated the structures of power. The book reflects his commitment to social change, aimed at illuminating the roots of oppression in order to facilitate a transformative understanding of society. Engels'' text is essential for those interested in sociology, gender studies, and historical materialism, offering critical insights into the ingrained relationships between economic practices and social institutions. The Condition of the Working Class in England
This book is the best-known work of Engels, and in many ways still the best study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engel''s first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. This edition includes the prefaces to the English and American editions, and a map of Manchester.

Feuerbach

Feuerbach
Feuerbachs idealism consists in this, that he does not simply take for granted the mutual and reciprocal feelings of men for one another such as sexual love, friendship, compassion, self-sacrifice, etc., but declares that they would come to their full realization for the first time as soon as they were consecrated under the name of religion. The main fact for him is not that these purely human relations exist, but that they will be conceived of as the new true religion. from Chapter III In 1841, German philosopher and anthropologist Ludwig Feuerbach published The Essence of Christianity (also available from Cosimo), a rationalist exploration of concepts of God and religion. It exerted a profound influence on Karl Marx, who incorporated some of its ideas into the atheistic, socialist philosophies of The Communist Manifesto a few years later. But Marx and his Manifesto coauthor, German philosopher FRIEDRICH ENGELS (18201895), did not see entirely eye to eye with Feuerbachthey had a particular bone to pick with his inconsistencies on materialismand in 1888, Engels published this pamphlet to explain where their thoughts diverged. This 1903 translation of that German original is an invaluable artifact of lively academic debates of the day, and a vital component for modern students of political and religious philosophies to understanding the 19th-century roots of both.

The Communist Manifesto By Karl Marx. Friedrich Engels (classics Illustrated)
The Communist Manifesto, originally titled Manifesto of the Communist Party (German: Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei) is a short 1848 book written by the German Marxist political theorists Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. It has since been recognized as one of the world''s most influential political manuscripts. Commissioned by the Communist League, it laid out the League''s purposes and program. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and present) and the problems of capitalism, rather than a prediction of communism''s potential future forms. The book contains Marx and Engels'' Marxist theories about the nature of society and politics, that in their own words, "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles." It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism, and then eventually communism.

It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism, and then finally communism. This edition is limited to 1,000 copies.

The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 with a Preface written in 1892
Friedrich Engels'' seminal work, "The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844," serves as a profound investigation into the social and economic conditions faced by the working class during the Industrial Revolution. Written with a meticulous eye for detail, Engels employs a blend of sociological analysis and vivid exposition to portray the dire realities of life for laborers in urban industrial centers. The text embodies a critical response to capitalism, articulating the transformative power dynamics that arose from rapid industrialization, and is often considered a cornerstone in the development of socialist thought and labor rights discourse. Engels, a German philosopher, social scientist, and collaborator of Karl Marx, drew from both personal experiences and extensive empirical research while writing this work. Having witnessed the grinding poverty and exploitation firsthand, Engels felt a moral obligation to expose the injustices inflicted upon the working class. His role as a co-founder of Marxism also established a framework for his critiques, as he sought to illuminate the intrinsic link between economic systems and social conditions, paving the way for revolutionary thought. This book is a must-read for anyone intrigued by the historical aspects of labor movements, socio-economic theory, or the roots of modern socialism. Engels not only documents the plight of workers but also challenges readers to reflect on the implications of industrial capitalism, making this text as relevant today as it was over a century ago.

The Communist Manifesto (Illustated and Annotated)

The Communist Manifesto (Illustated and Annotated)
In 1847, a group of radical workers called the "Communist League" met in London. They commissioned Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, who had recently become members, to write a manifesto on their behalf, soon known as the Communist Manifesto. Marx was the principle author, with Engels editing and assisting. The Communist Manifesto was originally published in London in 1848. Of all the documents of modern socialism, it is the most widely read and the most influential. It is the systematic statement of the philosophy that has come to be known as Marxism.Marx (1818-1883) was a German philosopher, economist and sociologist, as well as a political revolutionary. He met Engels (1820-1895) when he moved to Paris after 1843, and they worked together on several essays. Marx and Engels are best known for their revolutionary writings about Communism. One of Marx''s primary intellectual influences was the work of G.W.F. Hegel. Hegel''s theory presents history as a process in which the world becomes conscious of itself as spirit. Marx took this idea and furthered it, arguing that as man becomes conscious of himself as spirit, the material world causes him to feel increasingly alienated from himself. Escape from this alienation requires a revolution.Marx and Engels were not simply content with theorizing about revolution in the abstract, however. They thought that theory was only useful insofar as it promotes social change, clarifying the proper means and ends of revolution; they were thus not only authors, but activists, and believed that by theorizing they were actively influencing history. The Communist Manifesto can be understood as one attempt to influence history by spreading information about the communist movement.Marx''s theory should be understood in the context of the hardships suffered by 19th-century workers in England, France and Germany. The Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries created a seemingly permanent underclass of workers, many of whom lived in poverty under terrible working conditions and with little political representation. The Communist Manifesto was written on the eve of the Revolution of 1848 in Germany. The failure of this worker and student-led revolution caused Marx to later revise some of the arguments and predictions that appear in the Communist Manifesto. However, the general structure of Marx''s original arguments, as well as its revolutionary tone, remained unchanged.SummaryContextTerms
