Sometimes we don't know where to start after such great loss and the devastation that we feel. This book is designed to be easy to read and simple to follow. This is important when we find ourselves in the darkness of grief.

In this second book, the life of Priscilla Davis and Greg Brown is chronicled. Priscilla is the once-famous Texas celebrity who has lost most of her money and Greg is her junior lover who happens to be gay. It's now 1995 and the two of them have been on parallel paths without meeting until earlier in the year just as the movie of Priscilla's life was airing on ABC. She is now 54 and Greg is 26.Their lives were chronicled in the first book "No Clear Path: Two Texas Tales of Survival," which began with Priscilla's marriage to the wealthiest man in Texas in 1968 and Greg's birth in 1969. Greg humorously finds that he is gay just as Priscilla is shot at the largest mansion in Ft. Worth in 1976. Priscilla's husband is accused of the shooting in which two others are murdered and is prosecuted and brought to trial in 1977. By 1979, Cullen Davis is acquitted of all charges and his divorce from Priscilla is final in which she is awarded 3.4 million dollars. She moves to Dallas and starts a new life as one of the most lavish and opulent socialites.During this time, Greg is being raised 20 miles from the mansion in Ft. Worth by and educated couple who adopted him in Washington, D.C., where his dad was a physicist for NASA. He feels something is wrong with himself from very early years and finally discovers he is gay by age 8. The coping mechanisms are funny and dramatic but the family isn't equipped to handle disfunction. A blind eye is easier...until it's not.This is the story of how two people are brought together who are very different but need each other in the most primal of ways. They are both looking to survive; both mentally, emotionally and financially. But tragedy strikes Priscilla in the year 2000 and she has died by early 2001. At this point, Greg has to decide how to live his life with almost no money, healthy support system or job. The ties to his parents have frayed over the years and it may take many more to rebuild them. But what obstacles will he encounter? How will he survive without his only real lover and supporter? It will take many years to find himself and along the way old patterns will have to be broken and a new motivation to live will have to be found. But old patterns are hard to break; sometimes when it's almost too late.

America repeatedly finds itself mired in military interventions long after public buy-in to the national interest has waned. Why is the timely disengagement of military forces so difficult to achieve? Traditional international relations theories diminish the role of the individual leader in favor of the state or international institutions. Behavioral science theories have in recent years experienced a resurgence. However, the dominant behavioral explanation of foreign policy decision-making, prospect theory, while it focuses on how people tend to make decisions under risk, still minimizes the influence of the individual president. Decisions to disengage military forces are presidential decisions, just like the decisions to commit forces to foreign interventions. If we accept this, then it is important to understand if, and if so why, some presidents inherently are more or less acceptant of the risks disengagement presents. This book operationalizes a competing personality-based model of decision-making under risk. Referred to here as the trait-based model, it is assessed using disengagement opportunities in three varied levels of military intervention across four presidencies: humanitarian relief turned nation-building under George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton in Somalia, compellent air campaigns turned peace-making/keeping in Bosnia and Kosovo under Clinton, and major combat operations turned irregular warfare in Iraq under George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Data for the model predominantly comes from existing presidential personality profiles based on the dominant model of personality theory, the five-factor model, augmented by Myers-Briggs Type Inventory data from public sources. This study aims to explain the roughly 30 percent of cases which defy prospect theory''s predictions and to better explain those cases where prospect theory might heretofore have sufficed. The results suggest specific personality traits do in fact point to presidents'' predispositions toward risk, which in turn help explain their disengagement decisions. This work may be only the second to apply the five-factor model to presidential foreign policy decision-making and is the first to do so in the context of disengagement decisions. Hopefully it will foster further work in both areas.

This is the unusual true story of two people in Texas who are separated by both time and space until they have an unlikely meeting which evolves into an extraordinary tale of love and dysfunction. Greg Brown was born in 1969 and knew that he was different from an early age. By 1977 he was humorously (and frightfully) able to identify the condition as being gay. The adventures and situations which follow due to his homosexuality are both dramatic and funny. But just as important are the situations he''s introduced to regardless of his emerging sexuality. He was introduced to alcohol at age eleven by an older wealthy relative (which would influence him for years); is accidentally introduced to pornography by thirteen; is sent to Europe basically unsupervised at age fourteen and starts experiencing feelings of love for other men even though he can''t tell anyone.This is a snapshot of a seemingly ordinary upper-middle-class American family of it''s time. But it''s not a frivolous story of coming out or of having privilege. It''s a story of a boy hiding a secret and a family thinking they''re doing everything right. Events that occur are Unintended Consequences of actions and inactions by several people.Eventually, Greg''s parents move to Taiwan for a job opportunity when Greg is eighteen and just entering Texas Tech in Lubbock. It''s decided that he will come home after the first semester to take care of the family home near Dallas when his parents leave. What ensues for the next several years is a series of events, including a trip around the world, which leads him to meet Priscilla Davis, a highly dysfunctional lady thirty years his senior who has become known as one of the most infamous (and beautiful) women in Texas history. Priscilla Davis was the 36-year-old estranged wife of Cullen Davis in 1977 when the most famous murder case in Texas history against her husband was commencing. She accused her husband of being the shooter in their 19,000 square foot mansion in Ft. Worth in the summer of 1976 in which her boyfriend and 12-year-old daughter were murdered and Priscilla herself was shot. The subsequent trials lasted until 1979 and Cullen was acquitted of multiple charges, including murder. A movie title Texas Justice with Heather Locklear in 1995 told the story up until 1979. Priscilla moved to Dallas in 1981 with 3.5 million dollars to start a new life. Just at that time, Greg was entering his teenage years in Grand Prairie, a city five miles from Dallas. This book chronicles the parallel paths of Greg and Priscilla''s lives before they meet. Priscilla''s struggles are increasing as the years are going by and so are Greg''s; but for different reasons. When the two do meet, even 28 years of time and space can''t keep them apart.This story has many layers and dynamics. It''s a story of drama and humor which most people and families experience at one time or another. But it also speaks to the human capacity to forgive and forge forward.

National security strategy (NSS) changes from president to president. These changes are often referred to as doctrines. Some represent explicit grand strategy, while others require examinations of policy to ferret out. Their enduring traits, however, are most important to national military strategy (NMS). What has endured in America's superpower experience since World War II is that the United States engages forward in times of peace and fights forward in times of war. In this respect, Maj R. Greg Brown's Learning to Leave informs strategy at the highest stations of power. He notes that strategy is about managing context and that the context of US national security changed with the end of the Cold War, although its organizing framework did not fundamentally change. Through a thoughtful synthesis of history and organizational theory, Major Brown reveals misperceptions that add to the outdated security framework to further hinder disengagement. In the nexus of the end of the Cold War, the peace dividend, and an increasingly expansive NSS, he finds the historical parallel between the NSS and the NMS no longer appropriate, as it leads military and civilian policy makers to overextend the military. The rather counterintuitive conclusion that follows is that to sustain an expansive NSS of engagement, conflicts when they arise-must be planned with an eye on disengagement of military forces at the earliest reasonable opportunity. As strategic military disengagement is anathema to our national security apparatus and military culture, it must demand preeminence in the NMS to ensure timely disengagement. Regarding current conflicts, Major Brown avoids prescriptions. As we approach the historical inflection point between presidential doctrines, however, we have an opportunity to consider if the end of the Cold War, progress in the current struggle against violent extremism, or the global strategic environment of the twenty-first century warrants a reassessment of our national security structures and policies and the relationship between NSS and NMS. Major Brown writes with a command of the facts and a compelling style. This work is in various degrees historical, theoretical, counterintuitive, and shocking. While certainly not an airpower treatise, it offers keen observations and sound lessons on the use of the proper force for the objective, and it resonates with the inherent advantages that airpower provides national security decision makers. Originally written as a master's thesis for Air University's School of Advanced Air and Space Studies (SAASS), Learning to Leave was selected by the Air University Foundation as the best SAASS thesis for academic year 2006-7. It is a fitting installment for the Drew Papers. I am pleased to commend this excellent study and am encouraged by what it portends for national security thought in the ranks of our Air Force.

The project used a survey technique where participants were asked to map place-specific landscape values and development preferences with the goal of identifying priority areas for conservation, development and resource management in the region.
