Last One Walking
You probably know the story of the late Wilma Mankiller, the first woman to serve as principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. You might not recognize the name of her husband, Charlie Soap, yet his role as a Native community organizer is no less significant. Combining memoir, history, and current affairs, Last One Walking charts for the first time the life and work of this influential Cherokee. In telling this story, author and former journalist Greg Shaw gives voice to his sources. As a longtime colleague and friend of the family, he draws on his many travels and interviews with Soap and on previously unpublished writings, including a Soap family history penned by Mankiller, included here as the book’s prologue. Shaw offers a rich profile of Soap’s singular career—particularly as a champion of water rights. In managing public infrastructure projects, housing assistance, and water development in the Cherokee Nation, Soap has exemplified ga-du-gi, the Cherokee word for community members working together for the collective good. Shaw portrays a dynamic partnership between Soap and Mankiller. Together they reignited community development for the Cherokee people by listening to everyone, including the poorest of the poor, and hearing their pleas for reliable water, a basic human need and a sacred element in Cherokee culture. Charlie Soap’s name in Cherokee, Ohni ai (ᎣᏂ ᎠᎢ), translates as “the last one walking.” In the Cherokee wolf clan, this is the member who trails the rest of the pack to watch for danger and opportunity. The last one walking forms a bond of trust with the pack’s leader. The Native American fight for land has been well chronicled, but the fight for water has not. Last One Walking helps to fill that void with a narrative that is also deeply moving, revealing on every page the spirit of ga-du-gi.

Hire Purpose

Hire Purpose
A WALL STREET JOURNAL BUSINESS BESTSELLER The future of work is already here, and what this future looks like must be a pressing concern for the current generation of leaders in both the private and public sectors. In the next ten to fifteen years, rapid change in a post-pandemic world and emerging technology will revolutionize nearly every job, eliminate some, and create new forms of work that we have yet to imagine. How can we survive and thrive in the face of such drastic change? Deanna Mulligan offers a practical, broad-minded look at the effects of workplace evolution and automation and why the private sector needs to lead the charge in shaping a values-based response. With a focus on the power of education, Mulligan proposes that the solutions to workforce upheaval lie in reskilling and retraining for individuals and companies adapting to rapid change. By creating lifelong learning opportunities that break down boundaries between the classroom and the workplace, businesses can foster personal and career well-being and growth for their employees. Drawing on her own experiences, historical examples, and reports from the frontiers where these issues are unfolding, Mulligan details how business leaders can prepare for and respond to technological disruption. Providing a framework for concrete and meaningful action, Hire Purpose is an essential read about the transformations that will shape the next decade and beyond.

Reprogramming the American Dream

release date: Apr 07, 2020
Reprogramming the American Dream
** #1 Wall Street Journal Bestseller ** In this essential book written by a rural native and Silicon Valley veteran, Microsoft’s Chief technology officer tackles one of the most critical issues facing society today: the future of artificial intelligence and how it can be realistically used to promote growth, even in a shifting employment landscape. There are two prevailing stories about AI: for heartland low- and middle-skill workers, a dystopian tale of steadily increasing job destruction; for urban knowledge workers and the professional class, a utopian tale of enhanced productivity and convenience. But there is a third way to look at this technology that will revolutionize the workplace and ultimately the world. Kevin Scott argues that AI has the potential to create abundance and opportunity for everyone and help solve some of our most vexing problems. As the chief technology officer at Microsoft, he is deeply involved in the development of AI applications, yet mindful of their potential impact on workers—knowledge he gained firsthand growing up in rural Virginia. Yes, the AI Revolution will radically disrupt economics and employment for everyone for generations to come. But what if leaders prioritized the programming of both future technology and public policy to work together to find solutions ahead of the coming AI epoch? Like public health, the space program, climate change and public education, we need international understanding and collaboration on the future of AI and work. For Scott, the crucial question facing all of us is this: How do we work to ensure that the continued development of AI allows us to keep the American Dream alive? In this thoughtful, informed guide, he offers a clear roadmap to find the answer.

The Direct Synthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide Using Bimetallic, Gold and Palladium, Supported Catalysts

release date: Jan 01, 2013
The Direct Synthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide Using Bimetallic, Gold and Palladium, Supported Catalysts
In this thesis the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide from hydrogen and oxygen using gold-palladium supported catalysts is described. The direct route presents a greener and sustainable alternative to the current industrial manufacture process. This work aims to meet industrial requirements set by Solvay® which would make the direct process industrially viable. The drawback preventing the requirements being met is the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen over a catalyst can yield water as well as hydrogen peroxide. Once H2O2 is formed, it can be consumed by either reduction or decomposition. Thus, the rates of the subsequent reactions must be minimized to increase the selectivity and therefore H2O2 concentration to a desirable level. Aspects of the catalyst design and reaction variables have been studied over three results chapters. Firstly, the thermal treatment conditions have been altered, ultimately producing a catalyst with no activity to the H2O2 consumption under standard conditions. Switching off H2O2 hydrogenation was concluded to be due to an increase in Pd2+, isolating active Pd0 species. Secondly, active catalysts to both the synthesis and hydrogenation of H2O2 have been produced with no halide; the addition of halide has been shown to decrease hydrogenation activity while maintaining synthesis activity. Finally, a biphasic solvent system and a constant flow of gases through the reaction medium have been examined in order to produce higher H2O2 concentrations. In the former case H2O2 is extracted in-situ from an immiscible organic phase. The production of a 3 wt% H2O2 solution highlights the potential of such a system. In the latter case a semi-continuous flow reactor is utilised increasing the H2O2 concentration up to ca. 1 wt% (from ca. 0.2 wt%). The reactor allowed H2 selectivity and H2O concentration to be measured as a function of time, thus providing greater insight into catalyst activity.

Tertiary Teaching and Learning

Tertiary Teaching and Learning
Tertiary education today clearly represents diversity, displayed through the range of institutions and educational programs offered, the differences in student characteristics, including physical, psychological, economic, social and academic, the different cultural and language backgrounds of learners, and the different locations and conditions where learning takes place. Recognising diversity is important, but this is only part of what is required of tertiary teachers and institutions. More important for the success of tertiary teaching and learning is how teachers and institutions deal with diversity. Dealing with diversity, at times, requires changes in policy, institutional structure, the roles of institutions and their staff, learner activities, curriculum, teaching methods and technology. This book examines issues of diversity in the tertiary education sector and the changes that are taking place. It presents a range of case studies and approaches for dealing with diversity in tertiary education. Throughout the chapters the underlying sub-theme of this book - 'dealing with diversity' - is that good teaching is needed to bring about better and more efficient learning for students in increasingly diverse learning communities. Dr Greg Shaw is Senior Lecturer in Education at Charles Darwin University where he teaches and conducts research in adult education and training, educational technology, tertiary teaching and learning. He holds a PhD in adult learning in rural and remote contexts. He has convened two international conferences on tertiary teaching and is the co-author and editor of a number of publications on university teaching and learning. He is an active consultant and has recently worked in Papua New Guinea, Fiji and China.
