release date: May 14, 2014
Herpes Zoster. Monographs in Virology.
Herpes zoster (shingles) is a serious neurocutaneous disease caused by a reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It has been underestimated in terms of its burden, particularly in the elderly population and in immunocompromised patients, who can develop severe complications such as postherpetic neuralgia, meningitis or optic nerve damage. This book compiles state-of-the-art reviews on herpes zoster and VZV by leading clinicians and researchers in the field. They cover the molecular biology, latency and reactivation of the virus as well as the diagnosis, clinical manifestations, epidemiology and therapy of VZV infection. Infections in high-risk patients (immunocompromised hosts and bone marrow recipients) and pregnant women are considered in detail. Emphasis is also given to the direction of future research efforts which will be focused on the very early prevention of chronic zoster pain by combined antiviral and analgesic therapy, and on the control of herpes zoster by administering a VZV-specific vaccine. Providing a valuable update on current strategies to diagnose, treat and prevent herpes zoster, this book is of special interest to clinical virologists, dermatologists, neurologists, gerontologists, pediatricians, ophthalmologists, otologists and general physicians.

Flame Hardening

release date: Dec 11, 2013
Flame Hardening
This book intended for shop use tries to familiarize the reader with the peculiari ties of a hardening method which due to its many advantages is now in use, many shops. A general knowledge of the principles of hardening and heat treating is presumed. Introduction 1. The name of the process. Flame hardening is a method derived from the old quench hardening and is used for the surface hardening of heat treatable steels. Flame hardening is so named in analogy to flame cutting as the use of a flame is a distinctive feature of this process as opposed to the use of a furnace. 2. Characteristics of flame hardening. In flame hardening the area to be 6 hardened is heated with a burner of large heat capacity (approx. 0.5 · 10 kcaljhr/ meter of flame lengths or 50,000 BTUfhr/inch of flame length) supplied with a mixture of fuel gas and oxygen. The hardening temperature is thus reached in so short a time at the surface that a heat jam is created, that is, more heat is supplied to the surface than can be dissipated to the interior of the workpiece. As the querr ehing takes place immediately after the heating the penetration of the heat to greater depth is prevented and only the outer layer subject to wear is hardened. The core of the workpiece remains unaffected by this heat treatment in cantrast to the other hardening methods where the entire piece is through heated in a furnace.

Disturbance Attenuation for Uncertain Control Systems

release date: Jul 17, 2013
Disturbance Attenuation for Uncertain Control Systems
This book presents a survey on recent attempts to treat classical regulator design problems in case of an uncertain dynamics. It is shown that source of the uncertainty can be twofold: (i) The system is under the influence of an exogenous disturbance about which one has only incomplete - or none - information. (ii) A portion of the dynamical law is unspecified - due to imperfect modeling. Both cases are described by the state space model in a unified way “Disturbance Attenuation for Uncertain Control Systems” presents a variety of approaches to the design problem in the presence of a (partly) unknown disturbance signal. There is a clear philosophy underlying each approach which can be characterized by either one of the following terms: Adaptive Control, Worst Case Design, Dissipation Inequalities.
