Four Seasons

Four Seasons
Four Seasons By: Han-Jae Lee This essay collection recounts the modern and contemporary history of Korea through the life of the author. Korea was a poorly developed country that was devastated during the Japanese colonial period in the early 20th century, followed by liberation, and the Korean War. In the process, there was a time when many Korean people gathered their strength to create something out of nothing in order to escape poverty. And now, Korea is standing shoulder to shoulder with developed countries. Korea has achieved not only political democratization and remarkable economic development in a relatively short period of time in recent decades, but also Korean literature is making remarkable progress toward globalization in many ways. The following essays describe various elements of rural life in Korea as a child, life in a large city in Seoul as a youth and living abroad as an adult. Before writing this essay collection, he compiled seven poetry and essay collections in Korean and English, and published them in Korea and the United States. Advance praise for Four Seasons Han-Jae Lee’s, Four Seasons is an engaging collection of essays that recount the author’s experiences as a native Korean coming of age in a poor rural area, going on to lead a prosperous career as a working man for a large corporation, fathering children, traveling around the globe and spending time in the United States. Lee’s observations about both past and present life are touching and astute. A poet at heart, his reflections are tender and poignant, as he covers a wide range of topics, from tending a cow as a young man to his influences in literature and writing, to the old customs in Korea to new information technologies. Relationships, both intimate and professional are examined. Reading Four Seasons cover to cover, you will be entertained throughout. – Magdalena Montagne, poet-teacher The Four Seasons is a distillation of the author’s life. In providing vignettes of his life both in prose and poetry, Han-Jae Lee presents the reader with the thoughts and impressions of a life rich in experience tempered by wisdom. This will not be a book that you only read once, but several times because you will always find something new and instructive in its pages. – Alexander E. Braun, author of The Adventure of the Maiden Voyage

Survival Ratio Solves Random Censoring Problem for Causal Effect Analysis

release date: Jan 01, 2022
Survival Ratio Solves Random Censoring Problem for Causal Effect Analysis
Finding effects of a binary treatment D on a right-censored duration Y with covariates X is an important issue in survival/failure duration analysis. This paper shows that the ratio, not the difference, of the survival probabilities of the treatment and control groups solves the random censoring problem because the censoring part is cancelled out in the ratio, as long as the censoring duration is not affected by the treatment and is independent of the main duration of interest. No parametric assumption is needed other than for specifying the propensity score E(D|X), which is just to avoid the nonparametric dimension problem. Also, an estimator flexibly specifying the cumulative hazard function, not the hazard itself, with fully time-varying parameters is proposed, which includes the popular proportional cumulative hazard as a restrictive special case. Simulation and empirical studies show that the performances of the proposed approaches are remarkably similar, despite the big difference in their origins/motivations.

Vitamin C in Human Health and Disease

release date: Aug 06, 2019
Vitamin C in Human Health and Disease
This book presents the scientific evidence for the role of vitamin C in health and disease and offers new guidance on vitamin C intake in humans. The importance of vitamin C in preventing cancer and cardiovascular disease, its relevance to aging and stress, and its impacts on each of the human body systems are thoroughly assessed on the basis of the author’s extensive research and his deep understanding, as an anatomy professor, of the body as a whole. Findings published in the international scientific literature are fully taken into account, and due consideration is also given to empirical evidence, bearing in mind that mechanisms of action cannot always be precisely defined in the absence of human experiments. Beyond providing an up-to-date scientific perspective on the effects of vitamin C, the author hopes to promote human health worldwide by encouraging proper use of the vitamin. To this end, recommendations are made on the amount of vitamin C that should be taken daily and on the best way to take it. The book will be of interest to researchers, clinicians, and all others who wish to learn more about this vitamin and its significance.

The Political Economy of New Regionalism in Northeast Asia

release date: Sep 03, 2018
The Political Economy of New Regionalism in Northeast Asia
The book is the first attempt to offer a holistic and integrated exploration of the political-economic framework underpinning economic regionalism. In doing so it provides a much-needed contribution to the literature on international political economy, international relations and Asian political economy in relation to economic regionalism. The existing literature provides broad generalizations and limited discussion on economic integration (i.e. free trade agreements, FTA) with most analyses of regionalism generally contained to the field of economics with a focus on the welfare implications of FTAs, both for participating countries and the world as a whole. Readers of this book can view economic regionalism from a variety of perspectives with input from Chinese, Japanese and Korean research institutes, business and industry groups, and government officials. Drawing on the considerable country experience and expertise of the authors, the book attempts to unravel the paradox of the market-driven economic globalization process (regionalism) and address a serious gap in the current literature relating to the political-economic characteristics and strategies of China, Japan and Korea in relation to economic regionalism.

Lee emphasizes how to implement the three methods with data: data and programs are provided in a useful online appendix. All readers-theoretical econometricians/statisticians, applied economists/social-scientists and researchers/students-will find something useful in the book from different perspectives.

Design Studio Works, Sketches & Essays
I come from Seoul, Korea, where layers of ancient beauty and high-end technology coexist. The city has been evolving swiftly in ways that no single individual can fully comprehend and continues onward toward an exciting but unpredictable future. I have witnessed this change and have felt overwhelmed but inspired by this wild transformation. The pace of change has become a motivation for me to learn more, design more, and love more. If a city is a jigsaw puzzle, then creating architecture is like filling in the missing pieces without knowing what the entire picture should look like. I used to be afraid to make a mistake, thinking that a wrong move may stay and stain the beloved city for decades. But then I realized that adding a piece is not just a passive process but a mutually interactive one; the moment I make a move, it generates a new context. This revelation completely changed the way I see the world and emboldened me to be a more proactive, forward-thinking architect.

The Golden Gate Bridge and Other Natural Wonders

release date: Sep 01, 2013
The Golden Gate Bridge and Other Natural Wonders
The Golden Gate Bridge and Other Natural Wonders is Han-Jae Lee''s first collection of poetry to be published in English. Described as ..".a curious mix of Eastern sensibility and Western playfulness," Lee''s poetry speaks with striking detail and understated elegance. His is the mind of a seeker who persistently asks us to go beyond how things appear, and in looking deeply, to arrive at the soul of all things. Painting Sometimes the carelessly lined circle becomes a flower. And a casually drawn horizontal line becomes the place where Earth meets up with Heaven. I glimpse the bony branches while I sketch... The lines on the paper become the morning sunlight. Or the thorns of rose bushes. Bright flowers bloom. The rose thorns turn into pins which pierce the fin of the fishes like memories that are sleeping in the deep lake. The lilies are shy and smiling; hiding in the woods. I''m listening to Vivaldi''s "Four Seasons." Outside, it is raining; gusty winds whip around me. And lightning strikes with a loud voice. Just at that moment the electric lights go out. Everything vanishes into the darkness. I light a candle and start again- Put my pencil to the blank page. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Han-Jae Lee began writing poetry in 1997. He studied poetry and creative writing at Chung-Ang University and Korea University in Korea, and also in the United States, attending writing workshops at the Aptos and Campbell Public Libraries and at the Almaden Community Center in San Jose. In 2005 he won a poetry award (silver) in a national poetry contest for his work, A High-rise Apartment, given annually for an outstanding poem, sponsored by The National Assembly of Korea and The Federation of Korean Cultural Center. His first poetry collection, A High-Rise Apartment, was published in Korea in 2008. He also co-published three poetry anthologies and his poems have appeared in the magazines, Literary Movement and Trend, Literature World and Vision of Poetry (all in Korean). He has been writing poetry in English since 2004 and this poetry collection is his first book in English. He lives in both San Jose and Seoul.
