"The Long Road Forward" is the second book in Author James Dick''s Coastal Carolina series, following "The Long Road Back." The series traces the return of fictional former Confederate soldier Josh Eldridge to life in Currituck County, North Carolina and his trials, tribulations and successes as he finds his way forward. It picks up where book one left off in late 1873 and covers his determining how to weather the Great Depression of 1873 for his tugboat transportation business and his dedication to growing the faithful. It contains joy and excitement, pain and suffering, a look at family life in those days and the importance of faith. It is a time when the unknown and isolated Outer Banks of North Carolina begin recognition as a destination for sportsmen and vacationers and faces the difficulties required to overcome the force of nature in that fragile coastal area. James writes about this beautiful area based upon his experiences and the stories he was told in youthful summers living there. His first book on the area, a true story entitled "Summers at Old Nags Head," detailed his personal adventures and fun times on that beautiful shore in the 1950''s and ''60''s.

Honey, We Shoulda'' Bought the Ark follows a man''s major adjustment from an urban to rural lifestyle and his development of a much deeper love for animals, both domestic and wild. This change of life is supported by the loving encouragement of his wife, a true animal lover who can "talk with the animals" without even uttering a word. They clearly understand each other and respond in kind. The book is a compilation of stories about many of these animals, including horses, dogs, cats, a variety of birds, and even a few wild creatures which frequently visit. Many of these animals came from a background of neglect and abuse and have been given a home provided they honor one important rule: they learn to live in harmony with the other animal and human occupants. The stories include touches of humor, love, sadness, and even common sense lessons in life that animals teach us daily. Correspondence relating to business transactions of an Annapolis, Md., mercantile firm owned by James Dick, a patriot, and son-in-law Anthony Stewart, a loyalist. The firm traded in agricultural products and manufactured goods with England, Spain, Portugal, the Madeira Islands, and the West Indies and owned the "Peggy Stewart," which was burned by patriots in Annapolis harbor, 1774. This incident is recorded in the letter book, along with some of Dick''s other political activities. The correspondence gives detailed marketing information and discusses economic conditions before and during the Revolution. Frequent correspondents include Daniel Bowly, Archibald Boyd, Archibald, John, and Gilbert Buchanan, James Clarke, Robert Christie, John Glassell, Charles Grahame, Henry Hill, Messrs. Lux and Bowlie, Dr. William Lyon, William McGachin, Messrs. Merridiths and Clymer, John Nelson, James Russell, John Skinner, Anthony Stewart, and Thomas Worthington, as well as many prominent Marylanders.
