Some Came Running

release date: Nov 04, 2014
Some Came Running
James Jones''s saga of life in the American Midwest, newly revised five decades after it was first published and including a new foreword by his daughter, Kaylie Jones After the blockbuster international success of From Here to Eternity, James Jones retreated from public life, making his home at the Handy Writers'' Colony in Illinois. His goal was to write something larger than a war novel, and the result, six years in the making, was Some Came Running, a stirring portrait of small-town life in the American Midwest at a time when our country and its people were striving to find their place in the new postwar world. Five decades later, it has been revised and reedited under the direction of the Jones estate to allow for a leaner, tighter read. The result is the masterpiece Jones intended: a tale whose brutal honesty is as shocking now as on the day it was first published. This ebook features an illustrated biography of James Jones including rare photos from the author''s estate.

WWII

release date: Oct 28, 2014
WWII
James Jones, the novelist best known for his WWII trilogy "From Here to Eternity" (Nat l Book Award, 1952) "The Thin Red Line," and "Whistle," was chosen to write the text accompanying a coffee-table book of art from WWII edited by Art Weithas in 1975. That book was a best-seller and used copies are still available on line, but the images make it impossible to reprint. We are bringing back James Jones s extraordinary text, which stands well on its own as his only non-fiction account of his experiences as a soldier in WWII. The book is also a compact, unflinching history of the war told from the point of view of the men who fought it."

Coleridge and the Philosophy of Poetic Form

release date: Jul 31, 2014
Coleridge and the Philosophy of Poetic Form
Ewan James Jones argues that Coleridge engaged most significantly with philosophy not through systematic argument, but in verse. Jones carries this argument through a series of sustained close readings, both of canonical texts such as Christabel and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and also of less familiar verse, such as Limbo. Such work shows that the essential elements of poetic expression - a poem''s metre, rhythm, rhyme and other such formal features - enabled Coleridge to think in an original and distinctive manner, which his systematic philosophy impeded. Attentiveness to such formal features, which has for some time been overlooked in Coleridge scholarship, permits a rethinking of the relationship between eighteenth-century verse and philosophy more broadly, as it engages with issues including affect, materiality and self-identity. Coleridge''s poetic thinking, Jones argues, both consolidates and radicalises the current literary critical rediscovery of form.

The Ice-Cream Headache

release date: May 10, 2011
The Ice-Cream Headache
Short stories by the award-winning author of From Here to Eternity: "One of the significant writers of his generation" ( The New York Times Book Review). In his introduction to this collection of sharply crafted short stories, James Jones compares novel writing to a long-term, chronic illness. Writing short stories, he says, is like a brief, intense fever: the kind that can kill or disappear in a matter of days. Although best known for epic war novels such as From Here to Eternity and The Thin Red Line, Jones also wrote short stories, and the ones in this volume burn with deadly intensity. Besides the expected stories of the soldier''s life, Jones gives us something surprising: five stories of childhood, tender and horrifying at the same time, inspired by his early life in the Depression-stricken Midwest. They and the other shorts in this volume are accompanied by author''s notes, which supplement Jones''s introduction, and a preface by his daughter, Kaylie Jones. This ebook features an illustrated biography of James Jones including rare photos from the author''s estate.

The Italian City-state

release date: Jan 01, 1997
The Italian City-state
Italy in the Middle Ages was unique among the countries of Europe in recreating, in a changed environment, the urban civilization of antiquity - the society, culture, and political formations of city-states. This book examines the origins and nature of this phenomenon from the fall of Rome to the eve of its consummation, the Italian Renaissance. The explanation is sought in Italy''s singular `double existence'' between two contrasted worlds - ancient and medieval. The ancient was characterised by the total predominance of the landed aristocracy in economy and society, enforced through a peculiar system of city states embracing town and country. The new medieval influences were marked by the separation of town, country and aristocracy, by the identification of towns with trade and a mercantile bourgeoisie, and by commercial and proto-industrial revolution. Italy shared in both worlds. It remained a land of cities and of an urbanized ruling class (except in the Norman South)and re-established territorial city states; but the staes were very different from those of antiquity, the city leaders in the commercial revolution, and Italy itself seen as a nation of shopkeepers, birthplace of capitalism. In this fascinating and ground-breaking study, Philip Jones traces in detail the tension and interaction between the two traditions, civic and patrician, mercantile and bourgeois, through all phases of Italian life to their culmination in two rival regimes of communesand despots.
